Offense and defense are just so much more complimentary than the experts seem ever to acknowledge when breaking down stats. When the defense can get off the field quickly, it's a huge boost to the offense and often will mean a very weary defense on the other side late in the game. When the offense is controlling the ball it's also a big boost to the defense, which not only gets to rest but also has to contend with fewer offensive possessions by the opponent. It's all very much related, and opponents' punts, while a great proxy for how the defense is playing, also really does say something indirectly about how the offense is playing.
