Anyone else ever heard Kiper say this?

He was on ESPN's All Night with Jason Smith show at about 4:30am. They were talking about who wins MVP this year and they both had Brady winning it and Moss as 3 or 4. Anyway Smith asked Kiper if Favre had a shot and Kiper said he thought Brady was "on his way to being the best quarterback ever". Smith said "but I thought you said Elway was the best football player ever". Kiper comes back with "then I guess Brady is on his way to being the best football player ever". Smith was shocked and to be honest so was I. Smith said he would talk about what Kiper said on his show tomorrow morning (Fri 2-6am). I didn't know if anyone had heard Kiper say these things about Brady before.

Wow. Incredible, but I still say that the title of "best football player of all time" belongs to one Jerry Rice. I'll have a hard time thinking of anyone else in that spot, even if it is Tom.

Maybe at a 'skill' position, but hardly "best football player of all time". As much
as I hate the Steelers, some of those defenses had some pretty good players
and LT was no slouch either.

Yeah well, you want to talk about getting "an edge" that other teams didn't have, talk off the record to someone who was inside the league back then , and you'll hear about how those Steeler teams were at least 20% stronger than anyone else, all of a sudden. The accusation is that they ushered into the NFL the beginning of a new era in "sports medicine" that up to then had been practiced routinely only by the Russian and East German Olympic athletes.

With no hard evidence, I prefer to listen to Kiper's comments over an attempt to debate about something that is not debatable.

He was, but times change as do memories, he was the best I have ever seen.. Brady is right up there with him and Jerry Rice.. difficult comparison, kinda like raisins and grapefruit.

Think of the best raisin you've ever eaten, then the best grapefruit. No f-in comparison. I mean, who sits there saying "wow, this is one awesome raisin!"

I do think it's hard to compare QBs to other positions -- especially defensive players. Physically dominating in full-contact combat is simply an entirely different activity. Take a Lawrence Taylor, who combined speed, strength and pure ferocity. Scary, scary man to line up against. I feel fortunate to have watched a ton of Taylor, Rice and Brady. Never saw Jim Brown (though my mom was at Syracuse when he played there and has amazing memories).

Whether he's AUTOMATICALLY the best football player ever is a matter of semantics. If you don't use the word "best" that way, then you probably don't want to anoint somebody whose rushing and blocking is as mediocre as Brady's as the best football player ever.

I don't think it makes sense to call one player "the best football player ever" since each position features such wildly varying skill sets. For instance, who's best in this bunch: Jim Brown, Jerry Rice, or Lawrence Taylor? It's comparing apples and oranges.

Now, if elite players still played multiple positions on a regular basis, and played those positions well maybe you could have an argument. But players at the highest lever (NFL) haven't done that for a long time.

Rice was a great longevity guy but he didn't even have great skills for his position, 4.5 40 for example. He was also a whiner (I watched him every week of his career, at least with the 49ers, and, believe me, he whined, on the sidelines and to the press, for years). Sometimes he also had alligator arms over the middle. Rice set all the records because he lasted 20 years, and he had Joe Montana and Steve Young throwing to him for most of those years. Jim Brown had great speed and power the likes of which haven't been seen before or since in the NFL. It was a real shame he retired so young to do movies, Raquel Welch or not. He was the best football player ever, to me.
Brady might go down as the best leader, the guy that gets the most possible out of everybody on the team, including himself. It's hard for me to call him him best football player ever, though.

QB is the most important position, without a doubt, but Rice turned an average QB into a HOFer. Not Joe Montana, whom was already probably a HOF talent before Rice, but Steve Young. No one ever had the impact on a team that Jerry Rice did in his prime. The man was incredible and next to unstoppable.

While this is all a fun debate, I wonder if Kiper may be thinking of a future Tom Brady. He's having an excellent season, yes, but I've noticed that it's how you follow up that year is how a player is judged. Unfortunately for Tom, he only has one thing going for him, in the nation's eye, and that's SB wins. It doesn't matter how he did it, or what he had to work with, that's all he's got right now.

Unfortunately for the naysayers, Tom found himself an offense just as good as Manning ever had, and look what he's doing with it. How many records is he on pace for? Was Manning ever a lock for the MVP? This team is on course to set a new undefeated record, and have only played 11 games together.

What about next year for Tom? What if Randy comes into training camp, full bore? What if Darren McFadden works out for us? Remember all of the hits Tom took on his cap, and you'll realize how much impact he has on this franchise. As a Tom Brady fan, I feel the best is yet to come, for many years. I think this may be the guy leaving Boston folks saying: "Larry Who?"

But Bo didn't play five more years, so there should be a discussion on this.

That and people tend to severely overrate Bo, who was a good player but benefited from having a hall of famer who was in his prime sharing the backfield with him. A guy who ran for 2000 yards and 16 TDs in his career and was never even a starter should not even remotely qualify as the best player of all time.

Its hard to justify taking any WR ahead of Brady, Elway, Montana or any of the other Elite QBs.

A QB simply has more impact on the game than a wide receiver.
