I'm wondering if that might be part of the reason that the Pats threw so manically against Philly. Now I realize on the face of it that sounds ******ed, the Pats just want to win and all. But think about it--if it's a strategy that's maybe not bad anyway, why not?

Brady currently projects to set single season records in QB rating, completion percentage, touchdowns, TD-to-inception ratio, and probably a few others. The only one he's not on pace to break is Marino's 5084 yards--he's currently on a pace just off that, 5022. I think after hearing about Manning and his numbers for so long--and Marino and Miami (Shula) have been annoying this year too, that they want ALL the records for this year. And I'm rooting for them.

This doesn't make sense. If that was really the motivation, then why run Heath in on the 1? Why run Maroney in from the six or whatever it was?

If the records were the focus, then some play-calls would have gone other ways, IMO.

Oh come on. They are passing like they're insane. Pointing to a couple of running plays doesn't change that.

For the record, I don't think it's a conscious thing necessarily, but I do think it's something that they're AWARE of. I think they want 5085.

I'm just calling it like I see it. If setting records was a priority, even a subconscious one, then Brady throws for those TDs.

Just hold that thought. Right, BB's sole objective is to have Tommy break all the records to achieve some personal satisfaction over all the people he doesn't like. As I said, hold that thought . . .

But your point isn't logical here. Brady is already on pace to shatter the touchdown record. Passing from the one could add to that stat, but would only add one yard to his passing yards total.

Wait, reading my post to see where it said that was his "sole objective"......wait, I'm sure it's there somewhere.....

No, guess not. Come on, actually read what's there. The point was that getting these records just might be one of the meats in the competitive stew.

Don't put that TD record in the books just yet. Manning had more TD passes after 11 games when he ended with 49 than Brady has currently. TD passes are harder to come by as the year goes on.

Brady needs to finish with 10 TD passes in 5 games to tie the record. He's on pace this year to do that, to be sure. Still, 2 TD passes a game is a pace of 32 a year -- a pace that exceeds any single season he's ever had. Now, with Miami and New York on the schedule, I think he's going to get there. But I bet when it's all over it's not going to be 59 or something.

I think the fact that the Patriots ran with 1st and goal from the 1, and also with 2d and goal from the 4 with the game on the line, is pretty conclusive evidence that they are not thinking about records.

The notion that BB would give a rat's ass about records -- particularly in a tight game -- is laughable to me.

Forget about "in a close game." You think it's laughable that he wants the records? OK. I don't.

Unfortunately, I read what little thought was there. You've got to be kidding. For your sake, I hope you're kidding . . . .

If you've been reading this forum for any amount of time, you'd know that BB doesn't give a rats arse about anything other than wins. There is nothing else, and nothing can be as simple.

Forget about "in a close game." You think it's laughable that he wants the records? OK. I don't.

I think your suggestion that he would change what he otherwise thinks is the best thing to do at a given time in a game for records. That's your ludicrous suggestion, right? That when confronted with the question, "what gives me the best chance to win," he will take something other than option A because of records.

And why forget about "close game." You started the thread, didn't you? Was the game you're postulating this happened in not a close game?

We're debating the unknowable -- what's in a guy's head. So ultimately there is no way to say who is right and who is not. I'm saying that everything you're saying goes against every bit of evidence we have about the guy.

Ahh, F it. I'm just saying you're wrong.

But if the point is the records, why put off passing TDs because of the pace?

It's not logical to me that if the point was the records that they'd run for two TDs when those two TDs would have added to Brady's games with 3 TDs record.

BB has made it clear time and time again that he does the best thing to win the game. Not to set records.

Now, many people choose to ignore him or not believe him and a few don't know his philosophy - hence threads like this.

I, on the other hand, choose to actually believe what he says. So, the answer is "no".

There's a certain self-righteousness that seems to come out from a lot of folks on this board regarding certain (read: many) topics. This was a somewhat lighthearted thread about how BB just may want his guy to rewrite the record books while, of course, keeping winning as the top priority by far.

I suggest you all take a deep breath, particularly the "if you've read this forum, you'd know...." types.

I think Bill would like to see Tom get the records. Just my opinion.

OK, I'll bite, I'm the "if you've read this forum, you'd know...." type you are referring to, since that's what I said in my post.

You're right, it is just your opinion. And I gave you my opinion, which is there's a snowball's chance in hades that BB has worry #1 about records. He's a wins kind of guy. No self-righteousness in this response. It's been documented many times. Your opinion is, therefore, wrong.

OK. And I think, and am actually pretty confident about it--considering his competitiveness, his ego (not a bad thing), his immense knowledge of/appreciation of the history of football, that if the God of Football said to BB, "You're going to win the Super Bowl this year. That is a fact, nothing can change it. In addition, Tom Brady, your quarterback, could rewrite the record books this season--what say you?" I'm thinking Bill would quickly agree to that, but I guess I'm wrong.

That's completely different, though, from your original premise. Of course if someone offers me a honda and a cadillac, I'll take them both.

Your premise, if I understand it, is this: In the game against the Eagles, BB made decisions he otherwise would not have made in order to allow Brady to pursue a record.

Put another way, there were occasions during the game when BB ran the calculator in his head and thought, "I should do X, but I'm going to do Y because it will help Brady get a record."

Isn't that the premise? If so, I'm not surprised nobody thinks you're right.

It's also bad message board form to tell people they need to lighten up just because they disagree with you. There's a responsibility that comes with pressing the "new thread" button -- you need to be prepared that you might spark discussion or, in this case, you might be thought to have raised an insubstantial or silly point.

Number one, it's not "completely different" because if BB didn't care at all about records the answer to the question about Brady breaking the records would be "I don't care" rather than yes. But I see the records have been upgraded to a Honda, as opposed to completely meaningless. We're getting somewhere!

I think I made it clear early on that it was a bit of hyberbole relating to the play calls, with the underlying point being that the records were in fact something BB would like for Brady. There has been NO response that conceded that perhaps he would--just that BB doesn't care at all/could give a rat's ass/it's laughable to suggest he cares.

It's those responses--that lack of nuance to the proposition--that I'm responding to in the sense of lightening up. I'm all for disagreements, but there's a black/white either/or quality to many responses that runs counter to good conversation. Reminds me of the thread someone bumped recently about Brady maybe throwing for 50 TDs. It was at the start of the season, and many posters came on that it was ludicrous to even suggest such a thing. Oops.

Well, don't put too much into the Honda thing.

But, and it's just my opinion, I do think you're changing your argument somewhat.

If the question is "does Belichick want players on his team to have individual accomplishments if he has to give up absolutely nothing for it"?

Who knows. Maybe yes. Maybe no. I wouldn't be surprised if the absolute honest answer is "nope; don't care; never have." Or maybe the answer is, "yeah, sure, it's good."

But if someone were to give Belichick the option for Brady to break all the records this year in exchange for reducing his chance of winning the superbowl even one one-hundreth of a percentage point, I think his answer would be a loud, and exhuberant, "F NO!"

BB isn't going to risk the game on a record.

But if records really mattered than Brady would not have been pulled from the Bills game. Instead of Cassel running out the clock Brady could have gotten two more TDs.
