The Big Picture

As caught up as we all are in the Undefeated Season, remember that we have 5 games left in the regular season and will be the #1 seed unless we lose 3 of them and the Colts and/or Steelers go undefeated the rest of the way.

I'll be as disappointed as anyone if/when we lose a regular season game but the big picture of winning the Super Bowl says that we'd have to totally collapse to hurt our chances of winning the Super Bowl as regular season wins are irrelevant if we get the #1 seed.

Re: The Big Picture

An open question is how much Belichick is willing to risk injuries to try to get to 16-0. I think last night's answer is "not much".

I hear ya. All this 19-0/domination talk is getting tiresome to me. Last nite I remembered that winning games by 3 points is a lot of fun. Sure, I love the beatdowns, but just give me the W. And likewise, 19-0 would be special - if it happens - but if not, the Pats goal is to win the Super Bowl, not to be undefeated in the regular season.

I don't think he would risk the playoffs for 16-0; however he won't just sit guys as we'll be having a bye anyway. Guys who need a week off for minor injuries will definitely get one when they may not had we been fighting for seeding. But I don't think we'll see wholesale weeks off.

Win 3 Out 0f 5.

It's great to speculate about an unbeaten season and that is still possible.

However the real prize is the #1 seed and home field through out the playoffs. So if the Patriots win 3 out of the next 5 games, they will have achieved that goal. That is the real goal that even us fans should be thinking about.

There is no team on the schedule that the Patriots cannot beat. They will be favorites againts all of them. They could even do it againts the Jest on 12/16 which woudl be fantastic.:rocker:

5 games till perfection. If they get to 14-0 they will lock up HFA and the rest will be gravy. Let's go Patriots!!

This is a rough stretch of schedule as well. We are going into our 3rd night game in a row, on Monday night on the road against the Ravens. Then we will be playing the Steelers on short rest after getting home late on Monday night/Tuesday morning. If we win next week then the Steelers game becomes the game where we can clinch the 1st seed, so the players should be UP for that game, but all the night games (2 being on the road) has to take a toll.

Re: Win 3 Out 0f 5.

For me now this season feels like we're pitching a perfect game with 5 innings left.

I really would prefer at least 3 of the last 5 to be clear blowouts, the Colts/Eagles games nearly made me sick.

Any other season, they'd just be other great nailbiting games. This season, it's different. A loss just isn't a loss this season, a loss turns the 2007 New England Patriots from the best team to all time to just a really good team.

Wow! Back-tracking!

Who is "back-tracking"? I"m stating facts and putting the next 5 games in prospective.

I have never been in the "we are going undefeated club". If it happens, then great. I have always stated that it's more important to win the playoffs and SB then to go unbeaten.

Unlike Colts fans, we Patriots fans have different opinions and don't all think the same thoughts.

Re: The Big Picture

I've got to be honest--the undefeated season has become a very big deal to me as a fan. It's not like the Pats could go undefeated WITHOUT winning the Super Bowl, so the two things are linked.......but the thing is, somebody wins the Super Bowl every year. The '72 Dolphins were not, to me, even a particularly great team, but they are remembered in a singular way because they never lost. I want the same thing for the Pats this year--a big, unprecedented thing that by definition CANNOT be questioned. If they go undefeated, they will always be the first--and for who knows how long, the ONLY--team to go 19-0. If the Pats lose, I will be more than disappointed.

Me too. Now, if I could make a deal today that says we win the Super Bowl but lose at least one regular season game I would take the deal in a second. But as bad as it sounds, I would also be a little disappointed.

Re: Win 3 Out 0f 5.

IF they should lose a game, I'll be disappointed too. But that disappointmet will disappear when they have the 4th Lombardi.

I've been a Patiots fan long enough to remember asking the football Gods for just one Super Bowl Championship before I die. Now I want that 4th one really bad, more than the unbeaten season.

Re: Win 3 Out 0f 5.

It kind of depends for me. Sure, I'd like to see the team go undefeated, but mostly because it means they will have put themselves in the best position to win the super bowl. I'm already a bit uncomfortable thinking about what those games will be like if the team is playing for nothing but the chance to go undefeated. I'll be on high-injury alert every snap -- kind of like a preseason game.

I think if the team drops one of the next couple of games while it still has everything to play for, I'll be WAY more disappointed than I would be if the team drops a game after locking up the 1 seed.

I'll admit it, I want to see a perfect season also. If I have to choose then of course a SB win is the priority, but I want both. :rocker:

That's interesting. I think if the choice was: do you sign right now for one loss and a Super Bowl win or would you rather just have the status quo of let's see what happens, I would definitely pick the status quo. Someone should do a poll on that.

Re: The Big Picture

Bump to remind everyone that the most important thing about the Baltimore game (to me, anyway) is that winning/losing means the difference between being able to lose three or two games thereafter and still be guaranteed the #1 seed.
