Pass Interference Is Ruining The Nfl.

I'm sick of it. Defensive pass interference. Offensive pass interference.

It has turned the long passing game more into "who will get the penalty?" rather than "who will catch the ball?".

The "penalty is at the spot of the foul" is the most overdone rule in the NFL.

The offensive pass interference for touching or bumping the defender is even stupider.

Some form of it is, yes.

But allowing for 30 to 60 yard penalties on throws that likely would not have been caught anyway is absolutely ridiculous, yet we see these all of the time.

They should I hate that rule. I really hate it when teams heave the ball 50 yards downfield in attempt for PI.

But yet the defenders can pull Moss's jersey off his pads and get a free pass. You can push Moss, grab his arms, and almost anything you want and not get called. But as soon as Moss makes even the slightest contact with a DB, there goes the flag.

True, but that's because of bad officiating, which would still plague the league if we took out pass interference.

If you don't allow the ball to go to the spot of the foul than the only way to get a big pass complete is if the guy is completely uncovered.

The solution is to have better officials, which always seems too much to ask for whatever reason.

I think they should have maybe 2 different levels of PI. kind of like an incidental PI 15 yrd penalty and the more taxing aggressive PI which would be a spot foul. this would at least reduce some of these borderline PI calls that result in huge game changing plays. well since I'm not on the competion commitee i guess we will have to make do with what we got. my 2 cents.

Without that BS call we would've gone up 31-21 in the middle of the 3rd qtr. Ten points is too much for them to overcome IMO and more than likely we see a scoreline closer to what we're used to seeing this season.

I do not think it will change because the NFL wants to see points scored, and they would see a lot of yards lost if they put the 15 yard rule in.

The call today was a makeup call for all DBs, namely the Bills', where Moss really did push off (uncalled) for the open TD. Tonight was bogus but EVERYONE knew it was coming because of what he has gotten away with this season. I am sure the Eagles specifically reminded the league about that type of play before the game.

That would be a terrible idea. Randy Moss would be getting mugged time and again and it would still be a better strategy for opposing teams to kill Moss than to try to defend him.

Yeah, I'm getting really sick of the horrible officiating in the NFL. I wish there was something that could be done about it. I mean for God's sake it happened in a superbowl a couple of years back! Get with it NFL!

I think this is a good idea. It does create another gray area, which definately isn't good, but I believe t
hat it would accomplish, both in the way players play, and give the refs less game-changing power outweight that.

This is my biggest gripe with the NFL. This is a multi-BILLION dollar league that uses part time officials. These guys are like the National Guard in a way. There's just so much you can expect from a part time anything (and I'm not dissing the National Guard here at all). These officials all have real jobs as lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc. You want Professionally called games, get Professional officials, guys who work at it all year, studying game film, mistaken calls etc. You Get What You Get is a subset of It Is What It Is. You don't ask the National Guard to spearhead an invasion when you have the Marine Corps available. Likewise, don't expect a part time referee to be anything other than what they are in the NFL...mediocre.

This is my biggest gripe with the NFL. This is a multi-BILLION dollar league that uses part time officials. These guys are like the National Guard in a way. There's just so much you can expect from a part time anything (and I'm not dissing the National Guard here at all). These officials all have real jobs as lawyers, accountants, engineers, etc. You want Professionally called games, get Professional officials, guys who work at it all year, studying game film, mistaken calls etc. You Get What You Get is a subset of It Is What It Is. You don't ask the National Guard to spearhead an invasion when you have the Marine Corps available. This is my biggest gripe. Not just the low level, but the disparity between crews, and even the same crews from game to game. one game you get a fairly called game, the next it's atrocious.

My second biggest gripe is the PI calls, as was started in this thread. It's turning me off of the game. Any time there is a ball in the air 15+ yards downfield, I seem to hold my breath, and wait for a flag to be thrown. It seems like 50/50 if one will. I feel that PI calls are out of control, on both sides.

I checked through all games played this season and was surprised that PI has only been called 11 times, 6 times on defensive plays and 5 on offensive ones.
The defensive ones have been equally split - 3 against the Pats and 3 against the opposition. The offensive side is more unbalanced with 4 against the Pats (3 against Moss) and only 1 against the opponent (Dallas). Most games with PI called are fairly balanced (ie equal or one more than the other side), other than the infamous Colts game which had 3 calls against the Pats (2 defensive and 1 offensive) against zero for the saintly 53.

Usually these things do balance out, so hopefully no 81 wont be penalized too much in the future. But it is a point of emphasis this year, so I wonder how many other recievers have been and will be hit with a flag. I bet Randy Moss has the most!

I think a 2 tier structure is good idea, but would still argue against the spot of the foul as the potential penalty could be as much as 60 yds (or how far the strongest arm can throw it). For incidental contact there should be no more than 5 yds penalty and 15 yds for the more obvious ones. 15 yds is the most you can get for any infraction and PI should not be penalized more than roughing the passer/kicker or unsportsmanlike conduct (after a late hit).

We need someone on the Competition Committee, when is Polian's time up? Oh that's right, he's in there as long as he wants.....
