Nationally, the smart talk is saying that Spygate is the big motivating factor behind the team running up the scores. I must not be smart because I don't think it has added one point to the scores so far. Well, maybe it added one point. So far all I see is an offense doing what it is supposed to do. It just happens to be good enough to do what it wants to do, and it does that. why sex it up with unsupportable theories?

I see the scoring success more as a result of a perfect storm of supreme talent, great coaching, and the HC's desire to impact NFL history. As a matter of fact, some guys and I were actually predicting this right after we made the move to get Moss in here. If we predicted it, then it must have been pretty obvious. Could you not see what was about to happen? Moss, Welker and Stallworth - are you kdding me? So this success had its origins in off-season moves, not in anger about Mangenius.

Anger does count but I just don't think the success in scoring points can be, or should be boiled down to that one factor that has the least impact of all the factors. Compared to the years of dedication to the profession on the part of the players and coaches and owners, this anger thing is way overrated. Maybe it kicks in against the Jets some, but after that kickoff they are just playing football, IMO. When it comes to fourth and short in the fourth quarter I expect them to go for the first down, no matter who they are playing.

I think the real story of this team is this: It got better - a lot better after winning championships, and while its opponents like the Rams, Panthers and Eagles went into the dumpster. Did that happen because of Mangenius? He is literally a pimple on the ass of progress.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

I agree, this season is a lot more than a reaction to the rule violation and subsequent fine. If one looks at it logically, the Patriots didn't decide after week one to become an offensive juggernaut simply because they were angry. I don't think that is the kind of decision a team can make unless it is ALREADY an offensive juggernaut. That way the foolish ones in the media can see some casual "cause and effect" relationship and write about how the Pats are good because they're pissed off.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

This whole "BB's revenge against the league" idea is nonsense in my opinion. If anyone REALLY wants to understand what's going on, they need look no further than Brady, Moss, Welker, Stallworth and the offensive line.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

Yup, this spygate stuff is BS. The Patriots wouldn't have scored a single point less if they were never caught.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

I'll bet the media places this year's incredible Pat's run on motivation from Spygate because they want to somehow, in a back handed way, feel they contributed to this by ramping up Spygate. I'm with you in that the team isn't overly motivated by this. If anything their motivation derives from a lack of recognition by older veteran fans and senior media members of their previous SB victories. Remember Brady's recent interview when he said, "10 in a row means nothing. We already won 21 in a row and we won 3 Super Bowls." Reading between those lines, it sounds to me that they have more in mind besides another Lombardi, but also want to capture as many records as possible along the way and leave no doubt that they are one of the best ever. Sometimes things need to be forced down peoples' throats.

Good point. I bevlieve that's a real motivator for some pissant analysts and writers. Definitely.

There is also this annoying general malaise in our media, politics included, to reduce everything to two-second bytes of information. They want to dumb it down, to turn it into something that it might not be just to satisfy weak minds that can't follow a story for more than one minute.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

I think the Patriots are positioned to be better than any other offense the league has ever seen - just from a perfect storm of personnel and experience (esp. on the OL). HOWEVER, I can't possibly disagree that the Spygate B.S. has contributed to the (totally appropriate) shamelessness of the final scores.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

It's amazing how the media thinks they know what goes on inside the head's of the athletes.

What motivates the Pats -- apparently winning as many games as possible is not enough.

How BB was motivated to use a sideline camera because of hubris, or arrogance, or because he needed an edge? (Never mind that if it was arrogance and hubris, hew would not need to think it was much of an edge.)

Whenever I hear about these motivations, I tune it out.

What are you saying? That the blowouts are motivated by "spygate"?

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

While our offense is getting it's rightful share of the attention, our defense is playing well and so is our special teams.

This may be the most complete Patriots team that we have ever had.

Re: Smart talk is saying ...

People just want to add spygate talk wherever they can.

Yes, Brady was holding back on purpose when we had 5 new receivers almost all of whom dropped balls regularly and had no chance to juke out defenders like our top three guys do regularly. Why not admit that Brady is much better than previously believed? And same with Moss?

To some degree, of course they are. There are other, more tangible reasons, but the idea that Spygate isn't leading to especially lopsided scoring is naive, to say the least.

Pure conjecture. Please explain exactly how the Patriots would be playing differently had "spygate" never occurred. (This ought to be good.)

I'd say you and the national experts are both right.

I said in the pre-season that this was the team BB assembled to take a shot at a perfect season. The addition of AD, Moss, Stallworth & Welker put this team at such a different level it seemed clear it was designed to win each and every game.

That being said, I question whether we'd be dominating quite the same way we are without Spygate pulling everyone together so early in a "me against the world" situation.

Yes - this is no longer everyone's beloved team - and some people downright hate us. But as others have said, for an NFL team, you'd rather be feared than loved - and it isn't even close.

For me what i see is the SPYGATE saga has onlly one positive effect for the Pats this year and that is the "US AGAINST THE WORLD MENTALITY" It has brought the team together and focused them better then any other single event could ever have. The Spygate event is why they will not lose focus or have a let down as the season goes on.

The running up the Score charges are misinterpreted by the media because their memories for the most part are not longer then their individual on camera segments.

The real reason the Pats have taken a no prisoners, scorched earth offensive attitude this year is not rooted in Spygate at all but rather it is rooted in the last game of last year, when the Pats gave up an 18 pt lead at the beginning of the second half to he Colts and had to watch the Super Bowl on TV.

The Pats made a decision after that game as they reviewed the 2006 season and that decision was to never take their foot off the accelerator, NEVER GIVE ANOTHER OPPONENT ANY "HOPE", KEEP SCORING, KEEP PLAYING, KEEP STRUGGLING UNTIL THE LAST SECOND, and THE LAST WHISTLE.

This TOTALLY DESTROY EVERY OPPONENT ATTITUDE was born of the PAIN and ANGUISH of what should have been but was not....and BB and the TEAM i am sure are keeping that Pain alive and well as they prepare for each new game this year.

So Spygate has value for this year but the fuel that powers this team's destruction of every thing in its path is their PAIN from the ALCG of 2006.

I think the Spygate issue has given the team some motivation because of the cheater comments and the tainted Super Bowl comments that came out of it. Some Eagles players made a lot of those comments. You don't think the vereran Patriots players won't have that in the back(maybe the front, too) of thier minds Sunday night?

The whole idea of attaching a glitzy marketing (surprised it isn't trademarked yet) term like SPYGATE to the incident is horrible enough. The national sports media overreacted after what had occurred in pro BBall and they are never apologists.

It makes my day that the end result is what is currently happening in terms of the Pats vs. their opponents. I love that the media is metaphorically eating turf. Taste good? Got Milk MF's?!? :D

Rant over...Hehehe...well...until Sunday. :rocker:

100% correct. Everyone in America saw coach Belichick during the Colts almost explode while screaming IT'S A 60 MINUTE GAME. All the other BS conjecture makes the commentators think they sound intelligent. These are grown men playing football professionally that smoke being blown up thier collective asses wore thin weeks ago.

I, and many others, think you are dead wrong. Hence why this topic was started.

The Patriots have been extremely well constructed to play pro football and they are doing their job. If they had been built this way last year, they would have done it last year. If there had been no spygate, they would have been doing it this year anyway. They are doing their job. And they will continue to do their job.

It's impossible in this day and age for the media to simply report a story and not debate all kinds of (often incorrect) "motivations" for what is happening. Sometimes the simplest answer is, indeed, correct.

The Patriots worked really, really hard in order to play really, really good football. They'd be playing really, really good football regardless. That's the philosophy of the coach, the ownership and the players.

The above is a great post! It rings completely true to me.

In my opinion, the Patriots, by virtue of their past 3 Super Bowl titles (in 5 years!) already have a hallowed place in NFL history. This was accomplished IN THE SALARY CAP ERA, where league parity is supposed to be a domninant factor.

Now, they have taken it to a new level, by sustaining and increasing the intensity of the perfect storm discussed above.

Scott Pioli and staff, take a bow!!

The rules in this NFL era have changed to showcase the passing game. In response, the Pats now have Randy Moss AND a top five 2008 pick (for Deion Branch) plus Randy actually paid us a few million for the opportunity !! We also have Wes Welker and Sammie Morris from salary cap challenged Miami !! We also have locked up two of the youngest, most talented lines in the league. We also have depth up the gazooo. Accident? I think not! Nothing but hard frickin' work, (24/7/366) from Scott Pioli and his staff.

I'm really liking what I see ahead of us in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 ... !!!

But, back to the present day. Now, for the first time with this 2007 team, we can actually steam-roll over almost everybody. The goal is multiple Super Bowls AND the total destruction of every competitor.

It's a "three-for." This "scorched earth" tactic intimidates the competition, provides lots of game speed reps to improve preparedness, and promises to attract future "Randy Moss's", "Junior Seau's", and "Cory Dillon's" at significant home town discounts!

BB is the balls ... and the media don't have a clue! :D :D

I frickin' love this team !! Ummmm ... I think I've had too much alcohol ...
