The San Fransico 49ers trade Randy Moss, and Darren McFadden to the New England Patriots for Joe Staley.

All kidding aside, this has to go down as one of the worst trades ever. 20/20 hindsight I know, but they gave us the pick for Moss and a top 5 pick which could end up as the best RB in the league one day, or whoever we get for the pick if we trade it.

Or you could think of it this way:

Pats trade Deion Branch for Randy Moss and McFadden (keep in mind though, that the Pats drafted Meriweather with the Seahawks pick and traded their own).

The only thing San Fran gave up was a 1st and 4th, I believe (can't remember the specific details). It wasn't a bad trade, they just ended up being worse than anyone thought.

You really can't include Moss in that trade. It was a totally different transaction.

That's 2 separate terrible trades though. The 49ers didn't give up Moss, they gave up a 4th rounder.

Nonetheless, the Patriots have been fleecing teams left and right for some time now, even if it isn't always as obvious

Drew Bledsoe for Ty Warren
Terry Glenn for Asante Samuel and Jarvis Green
Madieu Williams for Corey Dillon
Kyle Boller for Vince Wilfork and Eugene Wilson
Joe Staley for John Bowie and the #2 pick
Samson Satele and Abraham Wright for Wes Welker
John Bowie for Randy Moss

It was - and it was a different #4 the Patriots traded for Moss - however the 49ers were offered Moss and weren't interested, preferring Darrell Jackson instead :singing:

McFadden? NO way the pats spend top bucks on a rb when they might lose Samuel to free agency and that LB is a year older..

We've been trying to tell people this for about two weeks now. They don't seem to get it. Apparently Maroney and his 4.6 ypc are horrible simply because he has been less consistent and durable than we'd like, and the Pats 4th overall rushing attack is not sufficient so we need to ignore HUGE, gaping needs in favor of a fan-boy pick like McFadden.

I love the Maroney protectionsim here. Let's say for the sake of discussion that McFadden is the next LT. Would we turn down LT because we have Mr. Mediocre(aka Maroney) on the roster?????? That is foolish. That's like not taking Michael Jordan in favor of Sam Bowie because you already have Clyde Drexler. I know, I know, we have no way in knowing if McFadden will be the next SUPERSTAR RB or not. However, why is it so outlandish for pats fans to say that they want McFadden if he is heads and shoulders the BEST value on the board at #2???? Should a team turn down drafting the next Peyton Manning because they have David Garrard??? Also, last time I checked we were 10-0 and don't have "gaping" holes anywhere on the roster. Even if we lose Samuel, we can still get by with Gay(assuming we re-sign him), Hobbs, and a 2nd or 3rd rd draft pick. Come to think of it, Laurence Maroney is the Randall Gay of running backs. Solid, not spectacular. Good enough to win with, but always at risk of losing his job to an UPGRADE. :D

I've been posting this in other threads and think this applies to the Economist BB.. Law of diminishing returns..

How much better does McFadden make this team? How much can a team that gets 7 touchdowns on 7 possessions get better?

Is there a chance the Pats draft him. Absolutely.. What are the chances.. IMHO not likely..

That's a foolish argument. He won't be playing on THIS team. He'll be playing on NEXT year's team. You know, the team that may not have Donte Stallworth, Asante Samuel, and others. Do you think that we will just magically carry over this year's success to next year's success? Last time I checked, you draft players to play on your team for at least 5 years. You don't just draft a guy becuase it fills a NEED for NEXT year. You draft a guy that will help you WIN for 5 years. 2-3 years from now we may go back to being the 2003-2004 teams that won running the ball and playing more conservative.

We're an injury to Moss away from relying heavily on a running game. The salad days won't last forever. We can't even guarantee that Moss has "changed" in some deep way and wants to play for the Pats at his current below market price for the rest of his career or even past this season. Belichick loves versatility and there is no one more versatile than D-Mac available in the draft-- he can and will block, he can catch and run and pass for TDs, he is an experienced and accomplished return man and ST guy and he has heart (he's carried a very bad Arkansas team, that could be as bad as Ole Miss with 3 wins, to 8 wins this year). If Belichick takes him, I'll totally understand it. He took Brady because he was too good of a player to let slip by him anymore, even with Bledsoe as our starter. He might decide that D-Mac is too good, too, regardless of LoMo.

As much as we benefitted from that, I have to concede the worst trade of all time was Hershel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings for essentially their entire draft for 2 years. Not only did the Cowboys draft the better back in Emmitt Smith, they were able to fill out all the other necessary parts including offensive line, full back, TE, secondary and MLB with those draft picks. The Cowboys dynasty of the 90's more than anything else was established with that trade.

The 110th pick used by Oakland in the 2007 draft WAS originally San Francisco's pick.

New England DID parlay the 28th pick into Randy moss and SF's top pick in 2008.

The way you put it reminds me of the way Red Auerbach used to do it.

Randy Moss on the 49ers? It would have been just as bad as Randy Moss on the Raiders.

He would have had the exact same media on his back every week. A major factor in his resurgence is getting AWAY from the Bay Area. The 49ers passing on Moss may not have been the best idea, but it was hardly idiotic.
