I think Favre deserves to be seriously in the discussion for MVP. I am a believer in the "V" part of MVP, not in the "S" part (stats) that doesn't exist. This is not the MVSP award, right?

Well, they've often gotten it wrong because of stats. In 2001 Brady was the real MVP. In 2003 Brady was the real MVP. Who got the awards though? Somebody with better stats and longer-lived reputations. Then Brady wiped both of them off the map in the playoffs, back-to-back. Hmmm, what happened to the MVPs?

So this time some of them want to get it right, and Brett Favre does deserve to be in the discussion. I don't think he stands up to Brady in the end, because I think Brady's stats will, for better or for worse, sway the vote. In reality they are probably equally valuable to their teams, but who can you give it to when one guy throws twice as many TDs and half as many picks?

The one thing I'll concede to Favre is that he's doing it with "less". But hey, NFL analysts, what the hell do you think Brady did all those years when you ignored him? Huh? Favre is doing it with less, but Donald Driver is not exactly lunch meat. Deion Branch would love to have his numbers. The thing Favre lacks is the running game.

Besides those two guys I think Moss' name does come up at times. I love what the guy is doing, and what he does by drawing coverage cannot be underestimated for its value to the other receivers and to the QB. In that sense he virtually touches the ball as often as Brady, in a way. But only in a way. The QB touches it on every down, so I don't think that I could ever vote a WR over a QB of equal skill and dedication.

But who else would rate the discussion? Kellin Clemens? JP Losman?

I definitely think that Favre deserves to be in this conversations, for all the reasons you listed. Brady will (and should) win, but Favre is a close second, simply for the way he's carrying and willing that GB team to wins.

I agree. Using the conventional measures that are used in football, Brady wins easily this year. But if you look at who has been better than expected, and who is most valuable to their team, and who has done most with less, Favre deserves lots of consideration. TB should have won in 03.

If Brady had gotten those MVP's a few a years ago, yes Favre should be in the conversation, but now all of a sudden a Patriot player is almost sure the win MVP, the media starts talking about how the person with the best stats shouldn't necessarily win it. Hmm...So no, Favre shouldn't be in the MVP talks.

What about '01?

What more value could you have to a team than to rescue it from a miserable start, loss of its franshise QB, and (at the time of voting) give it a trip to the playoffs?

In a way '01 was to me his most valuable year. His stats weren't great, his game was not complete, but he had no Terry Glenn either. He never had a true number one receiver and look what he did with the David Pattens and Troy Browns.

Antowain actually played a valued role but he never could be considered more than an adequate back.

What is unbelievable is what this kid has done with so little, and at the same time being ignored for the MVP award. It's the greatest screwup in MVP voting in history if you ask me. They have to fix that this year but in reality it's too late to fix what they already screwed up.

Let me just say this much--picture this: Brady throws 60 TDs this season, breaks Peyton's rating mark, Anderson's completion % mark, and gets Randy Moss the single-season TD catch mark. . . . and Brett Favre is voted MVP.

The first thing Brady would say is--I guess I'll have to do better next season.

you know, i hope they don't screw him out of this.

Everyone has always tried to find ways to bring down what Brady has accomplished or try and find excuses for why he is so good.

It's like everyone's afraid to admit that he's the best.

But if they screw him and give it to Favre it wouldn't be that bad for us as fans. Brady would be even more motivated to duplicate this season.

If Brady/Moss continue this pace, and someone other than those two get it... I will never watch the NFL again. All kidding aside.

Tough to argue with Faulk and Warner in 2001.

Like baseball, don't they decide the MVP before the playoffs?

I have noticed that. In honesty, I have not seen this thinking go beyond the "let's get Brett in the conversation" phase. I don't think there is any serious thinking that he'll win it.

I don't think I'd be terribly pissed if he wins it but I'd have to wonder how a guy with half the number of TDs and twice (or thrice) as many picks beats out Brady. Those aren't just stats like piling on points in garbage time. The picks thing is quite important to a team's overall success.

Not to get too convoluted but I do think the OL has a lot to do with Tom's picks stat. That's why he had two in Indy. Pressure forces turnovers. Peyton would know about that.

Favre is good this year, but so far not as good as Tom. If you were to nominate him for a lifetime achievment award, I would put him in there with Montana and ahead of Marino. I agree that Brett is the senimental favorite, but Tom is on the verge of breaking every single season record out there. Let Brett get into Canton ahead of Tom, but make him earn the MVP the old way - based on THIS year's performance, not lifetime. Very good post however - good topic.

I was listening to some old Moron on chicago radio yesterday who didn't say that Favre had a chance...

He said that Favre was going to win it. His main reason was that this could be Favre's last year.

If Manning had Brady's stats this year and undefeated record so far, there is not a chance in hell they would seriously consider giving it to Favre.

All even go so far as to say this..... If i was Favre and watched Brady break manning's td record, and go undefeated and i won the mvp, i wouldn't accept it.

How can you possibly keep a straight face and give Vicodin boy the MVP?

If such a dominating QB as Griese got into the HOF by having an undefeated season, then Brady should get at least the MVP for this year's accomplishments.

Let's not slip into the habit of defining the MVP for football the way we define it for BASEBALL, which is what you're describing.

If Tom Brady continues on, as is, it would be RIDICULOUS for him not to win the MVP, and unanimously. I understand the sentiment for Favre, and don't disagree that he belongs in the conversation, BUT while Favre and Moss and Derek Anderson chit-chat in the corner, #12 should be front and center at the podium making a SPEECH. THAT is how much more qualified he is for NFL MVP honors this season. It is the most dominant season in the history of the F-ing UNIVERSE, for God's sake. It shouldn't even be questioned for a second - but I'm sure it will be b/c the NFL and the media are a-holes this year.

Except for the fact that Brady has NEVER been in the MVP running before when he was exactly that kind of player. Now when he is going to break all the record books they are trying to use this as an EXCUSE to steal Brady's best chance at an MVP award. I don't think so. Favre's comeback is a feel good story but it's not enough to win MVP. Not when you have people like Manning winning the MVP in years when their team doesn't even make it to the Superbowl.

Don banks was on the dan patrick show yesterday and was asked the same question. He said we didnt consider brady when manning and LT won althought brady has always done more with less so he should win now. we cant penalize him both ways. Enuff said.

Brady is MVP! He called Moss many times after the season to talk him into joining the Patriots before there were any negotiations going on! Not only that, but Tom must have also convinced BB and the rest of the team, not the other way around. Remember, this was back when nobody wanted Moss because of his lack of performance and effort. Therefore it's likely that by the time Moss was interviewed and said he'd rather play for the Patriots than Green Bay before the official announcement, it's likely that Tom had already convinced him by then. My point is that Tom is the reason Moss is on our team in TWO ways -- first, by heading the hottest team of the decade which has won three Super Bowls and went deep into the playoffs 5 of his 6 years -- and by calling Randy and telling him he wants him to play for the Patriots. Brett Favre not only does not have the stats of Brady this year, but he also did not convince Moss to join them in the offseason nor impress him with his abilities and potential.

I think we already know who the MVP is. Who did Moss choose to take a paycut to play with?

Even if we had the Bills defense, Moss, like any receiver, would love to play with the best quarterback ever, and his name is Brady.

People suggested Moss wanted to go to the Patriots just to win a ring or be on a winning team. I think it looks like he wants to play with the best quarterback ever. He tries hard even though we have clearly won each game. If he wanted just a ring, he'd moon everybody as soon as we would be up 14 points in the first quarter of every game.

If Brady and Moss continued to put up impressive numbers, I don't think Moss would complain if they lost to the Chargers, Colts, Jets, Steelers, or anybody else. I mean, he's been on teams that had no playoff potential at all. The point is, he and Moss are the best combo ever. That's what he and Brady wanted. Playoffs wins are just the icing on the cake which one can't guarantee no matter what team one plays on.

I said Brady has been the reason for Moss's success in two ways, but there's a third one. Brady has taken upon himself to "mentor" Randall and make him feel a part of the team even before the season began. It makes more sense that Tom asked for Randy's locker to be next to his than the media's assumption that BB came up with this arrangement.

If Favre played baseball he might merit consideration.

This is football. Brady is the hands-down winner and it should be unanimous. He's having a historic season on a team which may go undefeated.

Besides, Favre already has 3 MVPs. It isn't like this is his last chance to finally get one or anything.

I have no idea about the locker thing or not, but the rest of this post is dead on. Tom IS the MVP. There shouldn't be a discussion involving anyone else.

If Brady doesn't win MVP I'm going to go ape****. It really does seem like some writers are trying to prop up Randy or Favre as alternatives because they either want to make a discussion out of it instead of letting it be a foregone conclusion or they don't want to vote for Brady. I hope it's the former reason.
