What if the Pats can't trade the pick

JaMarcus Russell signed a deal with 36M in guarantees over 6 years, and total value of 60+ million.

Joe Thomas was the 3rd pick and averaged 8M a year, something like that.

So suppose the pats are picking 2nd or 3rd and there are NO players who are deemed worth that much. What then?

What would the Pats do if they can't trade it? They'd have to draft a player and pay him 2nd most on the team next to Brady. That for an unproven possible bust....sounds kind of iffy to me.

So what do they do? Oh, I know "they can always trade it for 2 #1 and a #2, etc". No, they can't necessarily do any such thing.

I guess they could just 'pass' and wait until it's about the 10th pick and then pick someone.

It's a virtual certainty they can trade down if they want. In theory it may not be for a lot depending how the top five grades out. But if they want to go from #2 to #12 and get only, say, a second round pick they will definitely be able to do it.

In the worst case that it's a weak top five, and we don't know that yet, it's not a question of being able to trade down but what they're willing to take to do it.

I agree. They could trade for a proven guy instead of a mass of picks. Who though?

Unless there is a QB needing team right after our pick McFadden will be the only bait for a trade. So I want him to win the Heisman. He needs to be hyped and teams need to believe we'll take him. Or Atl needs to be drafting 3rd behind us.

Your's is the scenario I'm hoping for. I see it Miami, Oakland, our pick and then Atlanta. I think the Jesters and Rams win a couple of games. I'm pretty sure Atlanta will want a qb. There are some teams picking 7-15 I believe. Whom might want to deal up; Carolina,Minny,Chicago,Baltimore and maybe KC(Depends on how Croyle looks). I'd go from 4 to 10 in order to get their 2nd rounder. We could get our db. Someone like Malcolm Jenkins or V.Gholston. They get their franchise qb. We could probably flip that 2 for a number one next year while we're on the clock. And, tell everyone to bite me.
We get our player and don't have to pay him too much. We have a couple of firsts and thirds in next years draft too. We'll get a 3 if Asante walks.

This is where the exact draft order looms large. If the Pats stay at #2, they should have PLENTY of trade options. Dorsey and Jake Long will both attract lots of suitors (J. Long perhaps more than he deserves, as teams look at what Joe Thomas has done for Cleveland).

I could also see the Rams shelling out a bit to get Jake Long. I think if the Patriots have the #2 the day before the draft and want to move out, that they will have to discount the value of the pick to get a trade as the salary cap space demanded by that slot is too high compared to relative value. If it is nominally worth 2600 points, the Pats might be happy to take 2200 points in a trade to save the cap room.

How good would Minn be with a half decent QB??, they'd be scary good.

And the Jets may want a QB, and if they have their heart set on one guy, then we get to trade that player away to one of the other QB hungry teams .

The Jets may want McFadden as well. Jones isn't a spring chicken and their run game is terrible as aposed to ours, which is successful with Kyle Eckel. We won't trade with them but we could prevent them from taking him.

The likely trade is with Dallas if McFadden is at our pick. Their own pick is likely #31 or very late 20s, and the Cleveland pick will be late teens. They would need to provide both of those along with their '09 first rounder and its a deal.

I sure hope so. Ware is coming into his prime as an OLB and he's only 25 years old. I'd love to trade for a young proven stud player like that.
Hopefully the Cowboys think that Ware is expendable because they have Carpenter...
