My all time Patriots team by units ... as opposed to picking single players.

Some by the stats and some from the heart ... all great in their era.

QB: Brady
Steve Grogan (sentimental pick)

RB: Dillon, Faulk & Maroney
Sam "Bam" Cunningham, Andy Johnson, Don Calhoun

OL: Light, Mankins, Koppen, Neal, Kaczur
Hannah, Brock, Sam Adams, Lenkaitis, Jordan, Wheeler

WR: Moss, Stallworth, Welker, Watson, Kyle Brady
Morgan, Jackson, Francis, Hasslebeck

DL: Seymour, Wilfork, Warren, (Green)
Julius Adams, Ray Hamilton, Richard Bishop, Tony McGee, Mel Lunsford.

LB: Blackmon, Reynolds, Nelson, Tippet.
No knock on this years group ... but these guys were the
team back in 1985 ... they controlled the game.

DB: Harrison, Law, Poole, Samuel, Wilson(his best year)
Clayborn, James, Lippett, Marion

K/P: Josh Miller / Adam Vinatieri combo
Camarillo / Franklin

Re: My All Time Patriots Team ... By Unit.

RB: Jim Nance
Kicker: Jon Smith

Re: My All Time Patriots Team ... By Unit.

Why is Kyle Brady a WR instead of a tight end? And in that case, why isn't Ben Watson ahead of him??

Don't forget 78 secondary. M.Haynes,T.Fox,R.Clayborn and P.McCray.
A hall of famer and two guys who were pro-bowlers at various times fox and clayborn.

Sure Watson is ahead of him ... I just tossed the TE's into the WR's.:D

I'm sorry, I stopped reading after you appeared not to name Hannah first.

Secondary was hard ... I'm waiting for the old timers to chime in on this one BTW.

It's by group, not individual players.

Re: My All Time Patriots Team ... By Unit.

I disagree on OL and RBs.

Had to think hard about WRs but you made the right decision. I'd also have to toss in the 96 receiving crew with Glenn and Coates.

Give me the 78 secondary as well.

Hannah and the four guys standing next to him. How's that?

oh, thank god....I thought you ahd lost it there for a moment:eek:

Geez, I just looked again and there it is: Watson's name is there clear-as-day. In my defense I have a cold and have been medicating myself with straight rye whisky for the better part of 6 hours.

I would add Ben Coates over Watson. and Curtis Martin to go with Corey Dillon. Dont forget about Willie McGinest in his prime, he was a beast. Everyone else seems good.

I might get killed for this but when healthy, Curtis Martin and Robert Edwards, along with Dillon would be the best RBs of the Pats. Maroney might get there, he's got the potential, but he hasn't shown me as much as those three. And maybe Tebucky Jones in his prime.

You're entitled to that ... does it help??? :D

The OL with Hannah, Leon Gray, etc was far better than today's unit. No offense to today's unit, who make up a very good line, but that 1976 Patriots OL was an absolute beast.

To illustrate: in a preseason game, Chuck Fairbanks told the OL that he was going to keep calling the same play - a simple running play to the guard-tackle gap - until they scored a touchdown. After scoring the TD, the linemen could come out of the game, but they couldn't come out until they did.

The Patriots got the ball on their own 20-something and marched down the field on 8 plays to score the TD. The same running play 8 times. Amazing.

No way this line is even close to those guys. No way.

edit: Oh, I almost forgot ... the 1978 Patriots set the team rushing record for a season with over 3100 yards, a record that still stands. I think either the OL or the RB group (or both) pretty much has to be considered better than the modern group in the list above.

Leon Gray wasn't just a guy. He's a hall of famer too, if I'm not mistaken, or at least ends up on the final ballot every year.

Didn't make the cold any better, but it's making me enjoy it more.
