Maroney/Morris/Faulk/Evans/(Eckel) - this group, despite injury and some inconsistency, has the Patriots run game ranked in the top 5 in the NFL.

Bruschi/Seau/Vrabel/Colvin/Thomas - this group includes at least two players who may likely retire at the end of this season, and ALL of them are in their 30s.

Anyone suggesting we draft McFadden with the #2 (or whatever) overall pick, as opposed to trading and picking up a LB (while enabling the team to draft, say, a replacement for Asante Samuel), is being pretty short-sighted and reckless, IMO.

That's a pretty good point about running back's lifespan in the NFL relative to Brady's prime. I think Brady is in the smack dab middle of his prime. In 3 years he'll begin to decline if he hadn't started already.

Oh heck no. This would kill out team. Where are we getting the money to sign McFadden, Moss, Asante, Gay and keep Stallworth and Wilfork soon? Who are our DBs or LBs next year? What if Tedy and Jr retire as SB champs? Rookies dont play LB in out system well at all. We will have some losses, but you don't throw all the money at a second pick and let Moss, Asante, Gay and Stallworth walk because you want a darn RB.

This isnt fantasy football. We have a salary cap and 53 holes to fill. The money for the #2 pick would be disgusting.

We trade. No doubt about it, and restock with young blood.

I agree with the last few posts.

Right now out of the top 6 oldest players on the roster, 4 are linebackers with rodney harrison and kyle brady ranking at 2 and 3. I think that the pick ought to be used in some way shape or form for a linebacker if not a defensive back.

I'd love to have McFadden, but see what Maroney can do and use the draft pick to rejuvenate an aging defense.

I did no such thing. Tom will be 33 years old and you are claiming he would have started to decline before or around 33. There is no reason to think this whatsoever. 5 years? Yes. 3? No.

And another thought. The Patriots have had very good success with signing FAs below market value because of the opportunity to win a SuperBowl. If they do end up with a 2 or 3 pick couldn't they negotiate with the player. With that high of a pick they will likely know who would fall to them and could talk with them. Say McFadden would be available at #2. They could talk to him about signing a cheaper contract, but being favored to win a SB in his rookie season, or the Patriots could trade the pick and he could go to someone like the Falcons or Bengals. I don't think any high draft pick has ever been in this position before, and it is something to think about.

Again, unless the Dolphins trade down (which would be awesome because the price for the #1 pick is costly) no way Dorsey gets past them. Best player in the draft and fits the biggest need.

Assuming we stay there, people keep talking LB. Other than Bruschi, the other 4 main LBs are all signed from elsewhere. I suspect BB likes to make sure people have game sense and experience first.

I would not put the big money into a RB and we do not need a QB.

Seems to me that the positions where you seem to really get the best talent in Round 1 and have more trouble finding it later is at DL and CB.

What about OSU guys -- Jenkins at CB or Laurenitis at LB (contrary to what I wrote above), or Gholston (smaller DE who might be able to convert to LB eventually)?
