Why is a spike to stop the clock not intentional grounding? They are inside the tackle box and they are not throwing at a receiver or over the line of scrimmage? Random questions I dont know the answer to.
Wrong thread, but still worth an answer: to quote the NFL rulebook under intentional grounding (p. 56):
"Note 3: A player under center is permitted to stop the game clock legally to save time if immediately upon receiving the snap he begins a continuous throwing motion and throws the ball directly forward into the ground."
