3 downgraded

The Patriots have downgraded the following players to out for Sunday night's game:

RG Stephen Neal
S Eugene Wilson
ILB Eric Alexander

Neal, who is the team's starting right guard, had been on the injury report due to his shoulder. He missed the second, third and fourth games this season, but had returned to start the last five contests. He is likely to be replaced by Russ Hochstein. This also means that Billy Yates, who has been inactive for three of the last four games, will be active Sunday night.

Wilson (ankle) and Alexander (knee) had not been spotted at practice throughout the week and were not expected to play.

WR Wes Welker and OLB Mike Vrabel, both of whom had been limited in practice with the team reason listed as "team decision", have made the trip to Buffalo.

Re: Neal downgraded to OUT!?

Yes, he did.

Re: Neal downgraded to OUT!?

My man Wilson is having a lousy contract year.

Re: Neal, Wilson, Alexander OUT [mergedx2]

I wonder if Neal had some "minor" surgery over the bye?

You've heard the saying that the only minor surgery is when it's the other guy's.

Re: Neal, Wilson, Alexander OUT [mergedx2]

Neal not playing? thats not good....

Look at the positives. At least Neal won't injure a Patriot Sunday.

It's not really a big deal to me, we've played a bunch of games without him over the past few years and Hochstein has done fine. Neal's OK but he's eminently replaceable.

Sounds like it. He had been out then he played a couple of games, maybe gutting it out until the bye, then got it touched up and isn't quite ready yet.

Get used to it. I think you are going to see a steady progression of "dinged-up" players get games off. Not all at once (except maybe the Giants game) but I doubt this is the last "When the hell did he get hurt?" situation you will see this year.

Allows players to get rid of nagging minor injuries, gets backups some reps, win-win situation all the way around.

Well-argued.

Anyhow, Hochstein is fine as a sub. Maybe he can only play at a high level when he's relatively rested and undinged up, but anyhow he's done fine for us in such situations before.

Actually, didn't he play well for most of a full season when Koppen was hurt?

Won a SB, he did

In 2005, he started after Koppen was hurt in the Miami game. We had already lost Light (Pittsburgh game)...he is a capable backup, and Buffalo should be a good game for him to gain experience.

Re: Neal, Wilson, Alexander OUT [mergedx2]

I think we are being over cautious with Neal. Good idea overall.

Re: stephen neal out today

I'd bet that its not a serious injury, they are just giving him extra time to heal so that he's 100% after november. It also gives Hoch some playing time as well. The guy deserves it. It's great having depth!

Re: stephen neal out today

He has a chronic shoulder injury that has sidelined him for I think a half dozen games this year (and bunch last year). Neal is good, but next year I would not be surprised to find Yates or someone else in that spot.
