BB called out Meriweather beginning of the year

The LA times article quoted BB as openly criticizing Meriweather for saying that Welker is "one of the best slot receivers in the league".

He was quoted as saying "How the eff does Brandon Meriweather know that ....you're a rookie, keep your mouth shut!", at a team meeting.

Kind of swinish if you ask me. There are all sorts of ways to motivate people, some people don't take well to being treated with such contempt. Having someone remind him that management doesn't like rookies talking would work...no need for such nastiness.

Maybe Meriweather is just sulking and disgusted at the whole thing, feels a little unwelcome.

Yes people respond differently to criticism, but if you can't take a quasi-offensive shot like that then you're really not suited for football, let alone the NFL.

It makes no sense to guess what Meriweather can and can't handle. Maybe he didn't take it well; maybe he did. Maybe he found it funny and went home and told his parents about it.

The veteran players have also done that to rookies. I remember last year, a vet player slammed a rookie who was giving an interview in the locker room, something like " What do you know, your a rookie". I think it's a good thing, I think their trying to keep immature ego's in check. Merriweather is going to be fine, he's learning from Rodney and he has the fire in his heart from what I've seen and looks like a inexperienced Rodney to me.

IF Meriweather is the type to pout over something like that then, in that mindset, NE doesn't want him anyway.

IF he's pouting, he needs to grow up before the team has any use for him.

Thinking that way, it's smart to push rookies to see who needs to grow up. Figure out which nails stick out so you can pound them in.

I don't believe any of this, though. Rookies step in on this team out of necessity, not due to planning. NE has a deep secondary and hasn't needed to ask for much from Meriweather.

Also to consider is that Meriweather went to Miami, a school not known to ask for much from their players intellectually or to foster intelligent play. Belichick asks for a lot from his defenders intellectually. A year of acclimation could be expected.

He'll be fine.

What was uninformative about it? It was information and a question.

Meriweather is currently behind Baker on the depth chart. That is significant.

Was Meriweather the victim of the CB vs. S. debate, or did BB switch him to CB because Meriweather was not cutting it at S??? And then move him back to S due to injuries???

Everything I saw of Meriweather was in the preseason and he did not look to terribly comfortable in the defense at that point in time

Meriweather's feelings were not hurt by BB's joke. He was probably laughing at it just as much as everyone else in the lockerroom.

What can damage your morale as a football player is if a coach or coaches just ride your ass mercilessly, day in and day out, without trying to be funny or quotable. I wasn't at training camp so I wouldn't know if Joel Collier was standing by Meriweather the whole time, yelling in his earhole.

Its not the first we have heard this,but look at it another way,I can see how this might have been said in a manner that was not meant to be too overbearing.I dont know that it was,but the words themselves ,taken out of the situation and general ambience of the room full of football players during a training camp meeting,may not be as harsh as they look on paper.My two cents...In any event,if you want to pay me a million or two a year you can call me anything you damn well please...

That was Lonie Paxton and he was talking to Dan Stevenson.

As for the pregame locker room access, a couple of anecdotes stood out. First there was Notre Dame offensive lineman Dan Stevenson politely answering questions … at least until long snapper/locker room gestapo Lonie Paxton walked by and growled, “Saying a little goes a long way.” He smiled, but Stevenson got the point and the interview was over two questions later.

This post could only be from someone who has never played organized football at any level or been around someone who has.

I was hazed harder than that as a first year player on my high school JV team. The calling out of rookies in front of the rest of the team by vets and coaches (and, with most gusto, second year players) is a borderline obsession at every level of football. This is, almost literally, nothing.

The hazing of rookies that goes on in the NFL makes this just the tip of the iceberg.
