Why did he go for it on 4th down? Or even just LINE UP to do so?

It's mathematics-you just kick the FG to go ahead. Don't blame Adam completely on this loss-even ONE more yard would have made the difference.

Dungy has been an excellent coach for that team, but that was a HORRIBLE decision.

Dungy is an assclown. I hope that this is only the beginning of a healthy dose of payback.

Manning has been a great QB, and Dungy has clung to his coat tails.

But, things are changing.

Peyton did his best Norvo impersonation. I can't imagine anyway in which that is not his call.

It was only a 29 yard field goal...************ guys..only 29 yards.. Give me an effin break. Did you hear me, ONLY 29 YARDS...........I don't give a crap if my grandmother made that call. IT WAS ONLY 29 EFFIN' YARDS...........

Completely untrue..Tony Dungy is a great coach, the defensive renaissance on that team is due to him and his defensive scheme and bringing in the pass rush/speed players to try to duplicate what he had in Tampa. Look at Tampa now, when Dungy was there they were a perennial contender despite have the ****tiest QBs and overall offense. Even though they never went over the hump, they were always a legitimate title contender.

I aint a Dungy fan, but I think his nice guy, holier than thou, image actually detracts from the fact that he's a damm good coach and easily one of the best in the NFL.

I completely agree..people are wasting time talking about calling a timeout, setting up to run a play...it still was a chip shot, and the kicker should take the responsibility.

You can blame Peyton or whomever for screwing up earlier in the game, but that last drive is all on Vinatieri.

Tampa has had good defenses in the years since Dungy left. Monte Kiffin has a great deal to do with the defensive success of that team in the '90s and this decade. They also managed to win a Super Bowl after he left.

And from 2002 to 2006 the Colts defenses were varying from absolutely terrible to average to one good year. Seven seasons into his tenure he has a good defense and that makes him a good defensive coach?

Not buying it.

Sorry but sometimes even HOF kickers miss.

This was deja vu all over again. This was the relationship Tony and the Franchise had for the first three seasons of Dungy's tenure. Manning making the decisions on offense. He didn't just throw 6 picks last evening, he convinced Dungy to let him do things his way and he totally ballaxed the end of the game snatching defeat from the jaws of victory while his saintly HC looked on in dispair.

In 2005 you began to see that diminish, along with a new found it's a team sport attitude where we don't wait for Peyton to win for us, we all have a job - runners, defenders, kickers, ST (OK so ST didn't ever get the memo) even HC. The HC's job is to set the broader tone and make group decisions dispassionately. Now at the first sign of trouble, Dungy is deferring to the franchise again, and he makes bad decisions in those instances because they are driven by his competitive passion and ego. I saw that same look on Dungy's face as Adam trotted onto and then off the field, just like Vanderjerk used to have to. I saw it when they had their conference on the sidelines while the measurement was under way. Peyton was asserting himself again, not satisfied to be QB but ultimately wanting to be the decision maker. And after a 5 pick evening that would shortly yield 6, that's when I knew that their troubles will extend long beyond this week.

Belichick stresses situational football. The decisions are pretty much made in advance, and we don't debate them in public as they arise. Players JUST DO THEIR JOB. EVERYONE IS ACCOUNTABLE FROM THE FO TO THE BALL BOY. Brady is the franchise QB, Belichick is the HC and GM. Manning is the franchise period in Indy and Dungy is just a DC and group facilitator or figure head HC. At the end of the day it's done Manning's way unless Manning agrees to defer to Dungy, which he had for almost 2 seasons. And the level of authority above them is Polian, who is never accountable for anything - even when a woefully depleted offense has no viable depth to fall back on while shelling out the highest cash payroll in the league this season.

I love it. This is the sign that portends the return of the NFL universe to it's proper axis - rotating around a bonafide dynasty.

Whoa! Mo's points are huge. Yes it really does look as if once under pressure the Colts org returns to its dominant style. The team oriented, HC guided period of the last couple seasons has been abandoned in panic. It's very difficult to graft on a style to an organization that is not committed to it at the deepest level. The Colts just rejected the graft. You see this all the time in business where a new CEO attempts to introduce a new 'corporate culture' without it being innate to the management team.

You guys are kidding yourselves, you know that if Belichick retired TODAY Dungy would be in the top 3 of coaches you'd want to replace him.

Absolutely not.

Great offensive teams don't last as long as great Defensive clubs.

Why is that so?

Because an overpowering Offense is like a delicate fine watch. It takes a lot of fine jewels and precise parts to be constructed; lots of exquisite experience in assembly, and painstaking effort to complete. When finished, a single bad thump can upset the delicate instrument.

It was ever thus; until just recently when the Rules were distorted to make a offensive oriented team be much more successful. But even here, more Teams are trying to duplicate the great passing offense.

But even so, the Colts are wearing down. Edge James is in his RB dotage, and was shipped out. Harrison is still there, but appears that his best years are now gone. Their pro bowl LOT, is retired. A replacement drafted high in an emergency move, apparently will be OK but not a pro bowler like Tarik, and also seems to be bit by the injury bug. Harrison's drafted replacement is raw and has not burst like a superstar upon the scene. It seems probable he will develop into a good player but that is far from a replacement HOF WR.

And heaven forfend, Peyton himself is now well past the prime years of QBs. In but two years he will enter the age when many former starters start to be looked upon as possible experienced veteran backup QBs.

The end is coming.

before the penalty,it was a 23 yard FG, and Dungy had so little faith in AV that he tried to get a little closer.

If you have a decent kicker, and you can kick a 23 yard FG, then do it

ARE YOU NUTS????????????

Who is kidding whom?

All Dungy has done is win. Yeah, why would we ever want him:rolleyes:

Because I want a head coach with a back bone. Not one that let's his QB overrule his decisions. Plus I just hate Dungy as a person and don't want him coaching the team I cheer for. I'd probably puke if that happened.

I don't think he wanted to get closer to make the field goal shorter. I think he wanted to get the first down to run the clock down and not give SD a chance.

I also don't think the colts ever had any intention of running that play if the off sides trick didn't work. I think they would have taken the 5 yard penalty or used the time out.

All that said, I agree entirely that putting the offense on the field was dumb, particularly given how the Bolts offense had been playing. Football has too many moving parts. You don't want to run plays you don't need to run, because bad stuff can happen. Once the measurement showed fourth down, he should have run the kicking team on the field.

At the end of the day, I think the Colts' decisionmaking here was a result of their crappy special teams play. A one point lead with 1:10 left in the game is not a great position when every kickoff you attempt seems to lead to a big return. It caused a bad decision.

Serious question: If you don't think that Dungy is a top 3 non-Belichick coach in the NFL than who the **** is?

He probably is. Doesn't mean I want him coaching my team.

Does your grandmother still have that kind of leg?

I think she'd be disappointed in you saying bad words like "EFFIN". That is horrible. Do you realize that they talk like that in hell?
