1. The league sucks. I was lucky to have accessible to three fairly watchable games last night - Packers/Vikings, Giants/Cowboys, Chargers/Colts. One was done by the half; one was supposed to be a big divisional contest, but really wasn't in the end; one was supposed to feature two of the leagues best sides, but ended up looking like Appalachian State against Alaska Tech. And these games were OK. Pity those watching: Fins/Bills, Bengals/Ravens, Panthers/Falcons and other non-events. Dire. The reason: just a lack of quality throughout; a lack of thought; lack of preparation; lack of execution. Dire.

2. The main lack of quality is at the QB position. I said at the time of the draft I was surprised that so many teams had overlooked this position when there were some prospects out there who, at the very least, offered some promise. Minnesota is a case in point; I give Brooks Bollinger a pass; he's the number three on the roster. But would the game have been a lot better for the Vikes if Tarvaris Jackson had been in there? I doubt it. And what exactly are the Dolphins waiting for Cleo Lemon to prove before they give John Beck an opportunity to show why they overlooked Brady Quinn? And Baltimore???? The shot of Kyle Boller totally mis-throwing a practice thorw on the sideline as Steve McNair gifted the Bengals another field goal with a pathetic fumble, really said it all.

3. And as for Eli Manning. The guy had three delay game passes, AT HOME, as the Giants chased the game in the second half. THREE! He still looks like he hates football, still looks like he's got all the leadership ability of a crushed pistachio and still looks a gazillion miles from being the Giants franchise QB.

4. The last of those points also go for Vince Young. If he can't put together a consistent, coherent passing game, he's gonna finish his career reflecting on a highlight that happened before he turned pro. It's not good enough and now he's killing the Titans on offense.

5. And I think it should be a long time before we next hear Phillip Rivers talking himself and his team up.

6. The Steelers are for real. They had a great shot at losing one on Sunday but the D came up big in the second half when one more offensive TD would have been enough for the Browns. Roethlisberger looks to have put a lot of his problems behind him, and is leading a good all-round team. In my mind they have now supplanted the Colts as the number one threat to the Pats in the AFC.

7. I don't think the Jags have enough to challenge the Colts in the AFC South, but if Indy's injury crisis doesn't ease, there will be some jitters down the stretch. It's easy to criticise Polian/Dungy for the lack of depth, but they have been hit so hard in key areas that few teams would be able to cope with the losses. That said, they almost did enough on Sunday night to record an improbable win, but were killed by the two most experienced guys on the team making elementary mistakes.

8. I love the way Tony Romo plays football. After one pass in a key drive against the Giants, which was nearly picked off on the sideline after he tried to force one should have held on to, he went back to the line laughing and joking with his teammates. You could see the cathartic effect it had on them and that they relaxed with him and have great confidence in him. Another note from that game: Memo to Giants defense: if you single man mark Randy Moss like you did TO, he'll burn you even worse. For all Eli's lack of poise, it was this that killed the G men in the end.

9. Late in the Bengals/Ravens game, Carson Palmer was hit by a late, cheap shot to the knee by a Ravens defender (whose name I didn't catch) and that the officials did not see that was horribly reminiscent of the Kimo van Oelhoffen incident that did for him in the play-offs a couple of years back. An ugly tackle deserves a big sanction and the NFL should hit these guys where it really hurts and suspend them for a game. Fines are not enough.

10. Bye weeks suck.

I take your point on number 1, 'the league sucks'. I don't think it does, but I know where you're coming from and it makes me all the more convinced that the last, the very last thing the NFL should be considering is expanding.

With so many of the existing 32 franchises struggling to compete or even look particularly competent on the field, with so many teams who have no depth behind their starters - where exactly are the players good enough for another 2, 4, whatever rosters going to come from?

On this basis, I'd like to offer a brief Defense of Bandwagon Fans:

Yes, you should root for your team even in the lean times. Sure, a fan who jumps from winner to winner as the balance of power shifts isn't really a "fan" of any team. BUT...I don't blame anybody who follows their team more closely and avidly when they're good. Why? Because the games are better! Watching a well-played game with extraordinary feats of skill is awesome entertainment; watching yesterday's Bills-Dolphins fiasco is not. Would you scoff at a music fan who's more interested in tickets to the BSO than their local community orchestra?

Life being life, I don't get to see a whole lot of non-Patriots NFL games, but when I do it's often excruciating. So I'm not about to criticize a fan who finds something else to do on Sunday rather than watching his 2007 Rams.

1. I would not say the league sucks but there does seem to be a significant drop off from last year and I am not sure why. Many teams that were solid (decent) last year have drastically fallen (49ers, Rams, Bengals) and not too many teams have improved to fill those voids (Browns?). In my opinion the Browns are the only team to significantly improve from last year. Some teams have better records but I am not sure if they are better or others are worse.

At first I was going to say that it was because the coaches are not as experienced (Jets, Raiders, 49ers, Cardinals) and need a few years to grow. Put this with some bad coaches that keep getting jobs or keeping their old jobs (Chargers, Ravens) I think the NFL might have a few years until of growing in front of it. I can probaly get talked out of this position and I am sure other things are a factor but if I had to pick one thing I would pick Coaching. Now because we have a great football coach that not only is a great game coach but also one that has a long term plan for his team the Pats really shine.

I agree the Qbs leave something to be desired but I think they are get too much abuse for bad offensive play. The Ravens offense has been bad for years now regardless of QB this may be the worst offense of the Billick era but still it is a bad long term plan that put them their not McNair.

10. I look at the bye a different way. I actually like it. I got a lot of work done and we had family over for a party. Now I dont have to visit anyone or go anywhere on a Sunday for awhile. I can always use the "we just saw them last week (last month)" It is all in the planning my friend. Plan your bye weeks wisely

I do agree with OEP the talent pool is not so good that expanision is a great idea

Because of Spygate (and us having the 49ers pick) I find I am routing for teams to lose much more then for teams to win so i guess i dont mind that they are bad

And wasn't yesterday a banner day for teams that we want to win or lose?!

One of the reasons it appears the league sucks is because of the rules. The rules actually help us now. You have zero chance of having a championship team if you don't have a top-notch qb. A team used to be able to win with a strong running game, good defense and good special teams. It's nice to have them. But, if that's all you got. You ain't winning it. Tampa won it with Brad Johnson. Balt. with T.Dilfer. Atlanta got their with C.Chandler. We won it with a very inexperienced Tom Brady. It's all pitch and catch now. I'm waiting for some team to come out with a 2-4-5 defense on the first play of the game.

1. The league sucks.

Don't disagree with your intent, but by and large the games are fairly entertaining. The problem is being stuck in a market with a team that has trouble getting out of their own way on offense (Panthers for me). Make Sunday Ticket available to the masses and this becomes less of an issue.

4. The last of those points also go for Vince Young.

He is a running QB. If you run him a significant amount of the time, you will break him. If you don't run him a significant amount of the time, you will quickly discover he isn't a terribly accurate passer (especially with a lot of defenders back in coverage).

6. The Steelers are for real. They had a great shot at losing one on Sunday but the D came up big in the second half

No doubt the Steelers are good, but D.Anderson handed them that game. He threw behind every crossing route in the 2nd half. He turned inexplicably scatter-armed when the Browns needed him the most. Now we get to see how well he can bounce back from adversity.

8. I love the way Tony Romo plays football.

Obviously I can't argue your opinion, but I can't stand the way he plays. Those same characteristics that you love don't translate well when the situation calls for focus and execution. Prime example was at Buffalo. He coughed up a hairball and got away with it. I see the Pokes encountering a key situation in the 2nd half of a playoff game where Romo flings a pass underhanded, off his back foot, against his body and gets it picked. Romo gets that "wow, that was bad, wasn't it?" look, TO implodes, Jerry's face pops off, Wade throws a tantrum and Parcells sits back in quiet satisfaction.

I know what you mean, and I know it can backfire. But there's not enough joy in sport a lot of the time. The advent of serious professionalism and the vast quantities of money many sports are swimming in mitigate against it. I like to see a guy who looks like he's really enjoying himself. And it's kind of infectious.

Increasing defensive complexity has made being a QB ridiculously difficult, such that only a few at the top can truly handle it. Because the league simplistically thinks points=exciting they have put in rules overemphasizing passing, which makes the QB's job that much tougher. The pendulum might have tipped too far in that direction.
