Tom Brady called former teammate and free agent David Patten this offseason to say he wanted Patten to return to the New England Patriots.

Given the way the Patriots stocked up on receiving talent this past summer, Brady's call might seem like an odd audible. But even though Patten had only 23 catches in the two previous seasons with the Washington Redskins, Brady still valued the veteran.

"For Tom to want me back after all I had been through in Washington was truly a great honor," said Patten, who collected three rings and a Super Bowl touchdown pass in a four-year run with Brady. "Tom said to me, 'When I received my first opportunity, it was you who was on the other end of my passes. I know you. I trust you.'"

I have another great story about Dave Patten.

He was interviewed about what it was like playing for the Patriots.


Patten says that when he was signed by New England he got here for the first day of training camp. He walked into the weight room and he said there was this young skinny guy talking to a group of recievers on how to play the WR position. Patten said he was wondering who the guy was and somebody said he was "the 2nd year backup QB" Patten, who came to the Patriots with a decent resume at WR began to listen and was surprised to find that the kid was teaching him things he didn't know. Patten said, if this is the backup QB, "how good is the starting QB if the backup knows more about the WR position than most people in the league"

The back up QB in the weight room as you have might have guessed was Tom Brady.

My Patten Story:

Me and My dad went to SB 36 and Right before the half when he made his TD grab. I saw his hand and foot go down and new it was in and I was able to calm my pops down who did not see the hand.

Goes to show you how important Brady has become in the recruiting process. He wanted Stallworth and he wanted Moss - those two signings a I am convinced were about Tom working with the players and the front office. Tom was key in getting both to happen. Never heard about him getting involved with Welker, but it doesn't mean he wasn't involved.

Also, we all know how 'involved' he was on Branch with the imfamous 'phone call' that Felger claims (not sure to this day I believe the whole Felger claim). But the point is, Tom sets the stage and the player and Pats have to do the rest. Player has to have the desire to want to be a Pat and the office has to work out the major details.

Brady is going down as one of the greatest ever. WR's want to be here - heck all positions want to be part of this team. The Belichick and Brady effect are hard to turn away from if Brady and BB 'want' you!

PS Regarding Patten, heard him say that Brees is the most intense QB he has ever worked with including Brady. He made a point to say "and I played with Tom Brady for a while but I never saw anything like Brees". For what it's worth.

However long this dynasty lasts, there will never be anything to beat the way that BB and Charlie and Romeo took a bunch of spare parts and cast-offs to win the Superbowl and those who were a part of that will always have a special place in history. DP seems to have been a great guy too.

(My confession. I thought that, fast though he was, his hands weren't that good and so I wasn't that sorry when he left. I thought that we'd be better off with Bethel Johnson. What's worse, I haven't completely changed my mind. I still remember Bethel (along with Dan Klecko) as the great "might-have-been".)

Mike Vrabel, who at the time was a castoff backup DE from the Steelers.

Roman Phifer, a journeyman linebacker.

Bryan Cox, a washed up former Pro Bowler at the twilight of his career, as Dan Duquette would put it.

Joe Andruzzi, a Green Bay castoff figured to be a serviceable backup OL.

Charles Johnson, Bert Emanuel, and Torrance Small, mediocre but veteran WR's in a crapshoot position battle

David Patten, who had a quietly productive season with Cleveland but considered a longshot to make the team

Antowain Smith, a first round bust who lost playing time to Jonathan Linton, Shawn Bryson, and our own Sammy Morris.

Jermaine Wiggins, who I thought looked good in his limited time with the Jets, but considered a TE2.

Mike Compton, former Pro Bowler, on the downside of his career

Otis Smith, another veteran body expected to compete for playing time

Anthony Pleasant and Bobby Hamilton, journeymen DE's with experience playing in Belichick defenses

Brandon Mitchell, a DT project who had the task of replacing fan favorite Chad Eaton

Don't forget Terrell Buckley and Ken Walter!
