Perspective on Belichick and Moss

With no game this week, the moonbats and basement dwellers seem to be replaying the same tired rants about the local lightning rods. Well, here's a dose of reality, at least from my perspective ...

1. Bill Belichick is the single most valuable employee in the NFL. He is the best game planner, tactician, talent evaluator and motivator in the game today. He is also one of the select few who understands that the team that takes the field in September is not the same team that will play when the stakes are higher in December and January. Belichick and Pioli build the whole roster from top to bottom with that in mind. (It's pretty amusing to listen to Manning and the Colt media apologists moan about injuries in November. Hey guys, it's only going to get worse not better.)

If Belichick he were suddenly to become a free agent, everyone would be astounded at just how quickly the character assassination and holier-than-thou attitudes would go out the window and at how high the bidding would go.

2. Randy Moss the among the most uniquely gifted players I have ever seen. He has the best hands, feet and body control of any receiver possibly in history and his ball tracking skills are unparalleled. What people woefully underestimated is his desire to win.

Fortunately for NE fans, Belichick and Pioli make decisions based on facts, not press reports, rumors, anecdotes or emotions. The Patriots got this one right and 31 other teams were asleep on this player. And make no mistake about it - Randy Moss is a HUGE difference maker. Just ask Tony Dungy ...

All good points. Keeping this in mind lets hypothesize - If NE wins 4th SB and Moss gets his ring - will his contract be renewed. And if his contract doesn't get renewed, do you think Colts would end paying more than NE, and he ends being a Colt. Remember, all Moss wants is to win - and doesn't matter to him if its Brady or Manning. What are the chances he leaving to Indy?

That would be devastating, I think.

I disagree on only one thing -- that Belichick is a highly talented motivator. I think he's fine in that area, but he gets there from a VERY different route from most coaches.

He's not a rah-rah guy, and that's fine. He's obviously a GREAT coach. But I think the Pats intentionally draft self-starters. If they need a rah-rah guy to motivate them, they don't want the player to begin with.

The Pats would probably franchise tag Moss if they felt he was going to leave to a major competitor like the Colts.

I understand that the Colts have alot of room under the cap, so this isn't some kind of remote possibility. We have to lock him up long term, IMHO. He's unbelievable, and he needs to be in a Patriots uniform.

Well, he certainly has created an environment where his players are supremely motivated to perform at the highest level possible. It's not the traditional rah-rah approach and I agree that some of it is based on on the players he selects for the team, but it's pretty difficult to argue with the results.

Rah Rah Rah, is the most over-rated form of motivation in professional sports. It is basically meaningless. Ray Lewis was all pumped up and motivated on Monday, how'd that work out?

He is among the most 'football smart' players I have ever seen at the WR position.
Watch him run routes and set up the defender. His physical skills help, but how he positions himself, and how he sets up the defender is all between the ears.
I'm not saying they would be in awe of his intellect at MIT, but as far as football smarts, he is a genius.

I dont know why the media wants to conclude that the personality he shows when he is basically forced to hold a press conference (I think we can all agree that if the NFL didnt mandate press conferences, BB would have none) and talk to them about things he does not want made public, is the same personality he uses to motivate his players.

Listen to the players. 99% of motivation is FOCUS. Rah-rah, Herman Edwards type motivation--if it even works, lasts about 3 minutes. BB motivates his players to stay focussed on a goal, and it clear from listening to the players, they buy into it 100%. There is not a better example of the impact of motivation than that.

Why would being a rah-rah guy or not have anything to do with being a highly talented motivator?

Interesting point. I have watched all the games on HDTV, but as you know it is hard to see the routes fully on TV. Can you give a couple of spefici examples perhaps of how Moss uses his FBIQ to set up defenders?
