In my opinion this is a very logical possibility. We have the 49er's pick, which could very likely be a top 3 pick. The other 2 most likely teams in the top 3 would be Miami (already with R Brown) and St. Louis (S. Jackson). We have McFadden fall in our laps and trade Maroney for Denver's 1st or 2nd round pick. They are going to need a running back, and recall what Shannahan said about Maroney during the 06 draft "I wouldn't be surprised if he became the best back in the NFL". What do you guys think?

Keep Maroney and trade down. Use the added picks to load up on D.

I want to see Lauranitis at LB for this team, and we need some secondary help as well.

I see no problem with keeping both Maroney and McFadden.

We do not need a running back, specifically one drafted high in the next draft. Most likely trade down, then draft at least one defensive player.

Like Lloyd said.

I think this guy is going to have the kind of impact A. Peterson is currently having. I see no reason Shannahan wouldn't be willing to offer something for the guy he thought has the potential to be the best back in the NFL. It's not like Maroney has a lot of mileage on him. If they were willing to give us something, we would get a potential game breaker, while getting additional picks to shore up LB and DB. I see this possibility as a win/win.

Agreed, except I don't want Laurinaitis. We don't have a need at RB. Where do we need help in the secondary (assuming Samuel is re-signed)?

We are set at WR going forward with Moss, Welker, Jackson, etc. Does Stallworth renegotiate to come back? Dunno

We need LB help and CB/S help. I could see a later round RB taken to back up and split time with 39, but not a 1st. Maybe a Mendenhall from Illinois if he drops.

With Brady, the WR's and the o-line, we need to ensure success for the next 5 yrs or so by re-stocking the weaker spots of the D.

We could be looking at contending, as favourites, for the next 3-5 years.

With my proposed scenario we replace an oft-injured RB with a potential game breaker, while getting an additional pick or 2 to build LB and DB depth. How is this not a win/win?

Because it's doubtful we're wont to spend the money on a top-5 draft pick. And there's also some question whether Denver would even want to make that deal.

I'd rather keep LoMo, trade down, re-sign Samuel.

Our LB corps and DBs disagree with you vociferously. We NEED to draft playmaking, ELITE young LBs and DBs. As tempting as McFadden is, we are more than fine at RB.

Let me play devils advocate here and say what if.

What if Maroney gets hurt a couple of more times do you think about it then?

WHY DON'T WE GIVE UP ON MERIWEATHER NOW, TOO? Good Lord, come on, people. Laurence Maroney deserves a tiny bit more patience, at this point, no? Give the guy a break. He's looked great the last few weeks. We do not NEED McFadden. We DO need LBs and DBs. Let's try and be realistic here.

I will give Maroney more than a couple of seasons. I will also say that we have/had a scrub like Sammy Morris running blazes through this offense due to the OL and the passing game, and that it is a WASTE to bring an(other) elite RB when we will have REAL needs at positions like LB that are ANCIENT and CB where we are potentially quite thin.

I agree with not drafting McFadden if something isn't done with Denver. Denver is going to need a RB, and this isn't going to be a deep draft for that position. With the lack of depth in this draft, Shannahan may be willing to offer a 1st rounder for a guy he so badly wanted 2 yrs ago. If he is willing to do this, this becomes a no-brainer. We then have Denver's 1st, Oakland's 3rd and our 2nd and 3rd round picks to build LB and DB depth.

Look im a Maroney lover too.

vs. Miami 6 att 31 yards
vs. Redskins 14 att 75 yards
vc. Colts 15 att 59 yars

This year he has 89 carries for 417 yards. A very good to great 4.7 yards per rush.

Last year at this time. He had 107 attempts for 458 yards and 3 TD's. A 4.2 yard average.

So you can plainily see after two seasons he progressively better than last year even missing a few games.

I'm not saying we are giving up on Maroney. Just that we may have the opportunity to get one of the best offensive players to come out in years. And, if Denver likes Maroney as much as they said they did, we get the stud while gaining additional picks. As for the salary cap hit of a top five pick, with the way the cap is supposed to expand again next year, this shouldn't be an issue.
