Is it now safe to say that we took the wrong RB last year? Does anyone wonder why BB and co. had Maroney rated higher than Joe Addai?

Imagine how much MORE ridiculous this offense would be right now with Addai in our backfield?

Don’t get me wrong... LM has shown some flashes, but if im being honest with myself, I have to admit that Addai looks to be the MUCH better back.

I know the YPC are similar and LM has missed allot of time with injuries, but im just going by what my eyes tell me.

Thoughts??

i think the problem is the injuries, not the production when he's on the field...

Since Barry Sanders was not available, the answer is no.

Yeah... but I cant give a guy credit for not being durable. Is he ever going to be able to carry a full load?? A first round RB (IMO) should be able to handle a full work load without the team having to worry about him being too fragile.

It's the middle of his second season. This thread is flat-out stupid.

First of all, every site I have seen (and even Peyton Manning said this, allegedly) had Maroney ranked higher. He is more talented. Up to this point in their careers Addai has shown more, but he has also been given the opportunity to do more and has not been hurt like Maroney (he did miss a game). To say the Patriots made a mistake half-way through his second season is knee-jerk and silly.

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

1. It's been 1.5 years.
2. The Colts supposedly wanted Maroney as well.
3. They play completely different roles in completely different teams.
4. It's not like Maroney has been a bust.
5. Hindsight is a very bad way to look at any draft. We took Bethel Johnson over Anquan Boldin too, so why don't you give us a topic on that?

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

There's probably a few team fans and GMs out there who might be having second thoughts about taking QBs before a certain 6th round draft choice in 2000 as well... but BB would be the first to tell you there's some luck involved (and you can question BB's own evaluation system for letting Brady sit until the 6th round... why didn't he take him in the first?)

I think Addai's a tremendous player and predicted that he'd be the key to the game against Indy - indeed when the Colts play the Pats they're the ones who now attempt to play ball control and retain time of possession whereas the Pats air it out... a 180 degree turn from a few years ago.

But there's countless guys on other teams picked before and after Patriots players who have turned out well for their teams.

I'm not expecting that BB/Pioli are going to bat 1.000 on every draft pick and that if another team drafts a good player it means we drafted the "wrong" guy.

And its not like Maroney's a bad player either - so no, there is no "draft blunder" when it comes to RB

IMO from this point on, Maroney will outshine Addai and we will look back at threads like this and laugh.

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

We really dont pound the rock enough to know. Whats the most carries Maroney has had this year?

Granted he has been hurt but our offense just doesnt commit to the run like some others do (Pitt, etc.) And last year he split carries with Dillon. I would like to come out and see us run him 25-30 times late in the year and see how he performs.

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

Let's not forget that Kenton freakin Keith stepped into that offense and performed just as well as Addai.

And let's not forget that Joseph Addai ran against a lot of seven-men boxes, while Maroney was often running against eight or even nine.

1. Games missed over 1.5 years: Maroney: 5, Addai: 0.
2. True
3. Featured RB is the roll both players play on their respective teams
4. Well, he's not hitting the hole or stiff-arming guys like he used to
5. "Hindsight is a very bad way to look at any draft" Ummm, then how are you supposed to look at drafts that have happened in the past.

It's okay to say the Pats picked the wrong guy. They've had draft busts before.

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

Wow. Shame on me for not thinking Maroney is the Bees-Knees. Maybe you guys are right. maybe he is better than Addai.

I'f I try to lie to myself harder... Maybe I will start to believe it eventually.

Even if Addai turns out to be better, that doesn't automatically make Maroney a bust.

Re: The 300lb Draft Blunder in the corner of the room

The kool aid brigade has been on my ass for months over this issue.

Facts

Maroney was injured for the entire playoffs. He played hurt and his production suffered.

Maroney missed several games last year and was banged up.

Maroney is ALWAYS nicked up

Maroney had major off season surgery in his rookie year

Maroney has missed 4 games this year , and since he has been back he has a nice ypc but plays far to little snaps.

Morris was the better runner and he was a free agent.

Addai is far better when speaking of durability

Maroney still hesitates at the line and "dances"

Maroney needs to step up and start running like a highly touted first round back. The excuses are more tiresome then his injury issues. The guy has no frigging td's on the year. JUst playing sometimes and performing ok is NOT what a first round pick should do.

I agree Addai is the better back, but I don't exactly consider it a "300 lb draft blunder". I mean, Maroney is no Ryan Leaf.

You can't back this statement up at all.

Is that why he gets more yards per carry than Morris does?

Facts:

Nobody is arguing with the fact that he is injured.

Maroney has missed three games this year.

Morris is hurt, on IR for the rest of the year.

Opinion (notice the difference):

Based on your reasoning, that makes Maroney the better runner. :bricks:

Against the worst rush D in the league.

I agree, to early to give up on Maroney. He's got more pure speed, but Addai seems to have melded right in. Quick feet, hard runner, finds the holes. Didn't you hear CBS speak of Addai and Indy, how they were actually estactic that he fell to them? I know we can say, "sure, that's what the Colts say now", but if you think they are blowing smoke now, what makes you think they weren't blowing smoke around the draft? How often does a team truely reveal who they are targeting (unless you have a top pick, and it's obvious). This one to date has worked out well for the Colts. Maroney will do just fine in NE.

I see how you ignored all my other points. I wonder why? Btw I dont give a **** about ypc. Maroney has a great ypc avg and has no td's to show for it. He also plays far to little snaps in a game. Morris is the better runner. Morrris hits holes hard and finishes his runs being gang tackled by half the opposing team while getting yards. Morris is tougher and runs harder.

More excuses from the koolaid brigade. Maroney is a disapointment to this point.
