A 2008 draft day scenario

I see a potential trade coming in 2008, one that would be very ironic, and one where Belichick would really be giving his middle finger to the league. Now, not trying to jinx the team, but this is POSSIBLE scenario.

The Patriots get the 49ers pick, say it is between 5 and 10.

Now, it is pretty likely that BB will want to trade the pick. For one, the Patriots want to continue winning now, and although they won't make desperate trades, they are always looking for veterans who have something to prove. Additionally, the team probably won't want to spend $30M on an unproven rookie, as that will freeze up a lot of money.

The Patriots will be looking for a trading partner, and there is one trading partner that will be PERFECT. A team that is in such dire straights right now that it has reached an all-time low, where veteran players are begging to be traded to a winner.

Ladies and gentleman, the Patriots have traded their first round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Jason Taylor, and the Miami Dolphins second round pick (32nd overall).

Despite the NFL's attempt to take away the Patriots' pick, the Super Bowl champions get a "second rounder" with the same 32nd pick that got taken away. Oh, and they get Jason Taylor.

Roger Goodell walks to the podium, and with a loud, booing crowd, he looks embarassed when he reads: "With the 32nd pick of the NFL draft, the New England Patriots select..."

I don't know if Jason Taylor would be suited at this stage of his career to learn how to go from a 4-3 DE to a 3-4 OLB. I know he plays kind of like an OLB right now but there are different assignments he would have to get used to. I don't think it would be that easy. We are trying to use the draft to get younger not older. BTW I love Jason Taylor and would love to see him on this team, just not at that high of a cost. See Moss for a 4th rounder for details.

Rosie is real expensive though and while he seems like he wants to stay here..we dont know the business side yet. His cap is $7.6 million, only behind Brady next year.

LB FAs next year:
-Briggs: doubt he comes..he already showed displeasure when talking about a 3-4 D

-Dansby. This is my top target in off season..i hope he doesnt resign with Cardinals and comes here and wants to win. He plays inside out and he gives us speed that only Thomas might have on our LB corp..hes young too.

those are the top2 available..other guys like DeMorio Williams are small but fast..dont see them coming here.

Terrell Suggs is also a guy i would love but he wants a LOT of money from Ravens so..not sure we give a man more money than Rosie is earning right now

why do u want Jason Taylor? Hes what..32 years old or whatever, hes playing like ****..and he was thinking about retiring last year. If we can get him Randy Moss type CHEAP, sure but a first rounder involved..a top 10 pick? NO WAY

if he was 28 years old, having another solid year and still a ton left in the tank..maybe but no way. Hes expensive in cap..hes old..slowing down..expressed interest in retirement. forget about it.

Really folks, I like JT and Zack as much as the next guy...but these trade scenarios were viable 3-4 years ago. Not now.

The Pats are in an ideal situation to get younger at LB this year. Assuming the expected juniors declare, the first day will be littered with productive linebackers...a significant number of them with the size the Pats want.

If you promise not to post the inevitable "Belichick never drafts linebackers", I'll promise not to list all the curveballs Belichick has thrown right about the time we think we have him figured out.

i see Wilson leaving..we have safeties..hes been hurt a lot. We arent gonna be patient and give another chance. I think he'll be in demand with a week Safety market.

Samuel..why fare well? We were willing to give Stallworth + Washington + Welker a lot of money. We gave Thomas a lot. Thomas was great for a few years so he earned the money. Samuel was great for 1..we werent comfortable yet but now, we might be.

Colvin..i want him back but he needs to get a new deal..cheaper or restructure. We pay players that are worth it..Warren-Seymour-Thomas..

Bruschi..i think he'll resign for a year or 2 because if we draft a young man..who better to teach him than Seau and Bruschi if either stay? There arent many great fits out there for our 3-4 in FA..

Not going to happen - especially not with a division rival who we've already undressed with the Welker trade (not that they could have stopped us there)

More likely Taylor reaches a settlement to get out of his contract with the Fins, and decides to retire/"graduate" and follow Seau to NE

We keep our pick (#5?) and trade back to #16 and #26 for equal value - allowing BB to grab TWO future starters and say FU to the league, regaining the "lost" pick (which would of course have been #32)

Of course, that depends on who is available at #5... no one's lamenting our use of a #6 pick on Seymour... his rookie contract certainly was no burden to us.

We gave Welker a lot because he fits perfectly for what the Pats needed on offense. We gave Thomas because he has an amazing skill set that is perfectly suited for the Pats' D.

Stallworth and Washington will never see the money in their contracts after this year. Stallworth could come back for short money, but I wouldn't count on it.

Samuel wants a big signing bonus and he will get it from someone. I don't think the Pats see him as a game-altering talent. Look at all the CBs being burned weekly. Champ Bailey used to be the only one who was immune but even he has been picked on. The rules are designed to minimize the impact of CBs. Unless you are a "lockdown, take the best WR out of the game, don't throw to my side of the field" corner, you just aren't worth the cap charge.

I think what Bill Belichick will do as an FU to the nfl, is he'll trade down for 2 lower first rounders instead of one high one. I would rather have this than one really high one personally.

I think Belichick will do what makes the most sense. He will get the most value out of his draft pick.

What will help the team more? a #5 or a #16 and #20 (or whatever the numbers work out to be).

I think you guys are underestimating just how well Randall Gay has played this year. Granted it has been at the Nickel but the kid is young and there is always room for CB's in this league. Look at what the Colt's DB's got last year in FA. Mangini would love to take Gay from us so don't think it will be that easy to sign him

Agree that we don't give RG enough credit...but I believe Belichick thinks highly of him. If Belichick offers some decent coin, I expect him to stay. If Mangini breaks the bank for Gay, I would expect him to be gone (both Gay and then Mangini not long after).

Not gonna happen, nor would i ever want to see this happen... EVER. Jason Taylor though a great player, is growing old and is certainly not worth a top 5-10 pick. That is just crazy talk.

Darren McFadden FTW, trade Maroney to Greenbay for a 20-31 pick and draft either CB Aqib Talib, MLB Rey Maualuga, or Safety Tom Zbikowski

Though i like Maroney and i do certainly think he has the potential to be a very good back. But IMO Darren McFadden is better than Adrian Peterson , not to mention he can also catch like a WR. Just imagine next years offense with Moss, Welker, Stallworth, Watson and now a running back that is just as dangerous as Adrian Peterson. If you dont believe the hype, just watch Darren run and he will make a believer out of anyone. Last week he put up a staggering 323 yards running against South Carolina!!!! You guys also have to remember that Arkansas has NO Passing game what so ever. That means, other schools are putting 8 men in the box practically every play, yet Darren is just straight up killing the other teams and averages almost 7 yards per carry. That is just crazy. I have never seen a player like this and i for one posted on another pats board to try and saying we draft should Peterson 2 years ago before he became such a star in college.

Better scenario: Land in the top 3-5 range, the quarterback trio, Long and McFadden all coveted, find a team desperate for one of those players at our spot, trade down into the 12-15 range, pick up a top linebacker like Laurinaitas, a 2009 first, and 2008 third and fourth round picks, or something along those lines. Just absolutely tear some team desperate for a top talent a new one, like the Chargers have done a few times recently. Or, go absolutely crazy and take Calais Campbell from Miami, who could be the defensive Adrian Peterson as a rush DE/OLB rookie freak, a new LT for Belichick to play with.
