Why do the Media and the NFL disrespect and dislike the Pats so much?

Outside looking in, from a Coltsfan perspective, I've been eating my popcorn and read several, several threads here (highly entertaining) the last week or so and there is a very common theme. I'm curious to what the thoughts are as to

1.) Why the media is out to get the Pats at almost every turn?

2.) Why the NFL is against the Pats to the point of trying to undermine the franchise?

I'm especially curious about #2 because the Pats are a big part OF the NFL...


Maybe I'm wrong its just a few peripheral fans that are saying these things, but it reads on here that it is the majority of diehard fans that believe this.

I do have definite thoughts on both, but I am on the outside and biased in a different way, obviously, so I'd be interested to see why Pats fans feel the way they do.

I always try to flip it or emphathize (sp?) if it was the team I follow and how I would feel, under what ever circumstances.

The media pushes the story because there's a market for it. Rival fans love to hear it and it makes them feel better about their team's lack of success. It provides some imaginary moral high ground for them.

I would speculate that the NFL wants more parity and is uncomfortable with dominate teams. How far they're willing to go to acheive parity is the question.

Let's face it... It's a joy to watch a dominate team that you're rooting for... for the people on the wrong end of the dominance, it's less of a joy.

also i think BB has rubbed quite a few journalists the wrong way and doesnt suck up to them. its like if you want to be liked you must suck up.

same with boston media....there are as many with him as against him.

I never understood why people thought the NFL would be against the Pats. Why would the league purposely rig its product to damage a team? Maybe I'm being naive.

As for the media, I'd say the reason why the Pats are so hated is because of Belichick. He's not making their jobs easy. Most of these guys are out for a buck so they stir up attention and go after the Pats. There's no better example of this than the worldwide leader.

2. Because the morphing of the media created 'clean cut, Patriots character' meme into the 'evil empire' meme makes readable copy

3. Because there IS no other story in the NFL this year. The Pats are SO superior to the other 31, there's not much else to write about.

If by the NFL you mean the other 31 owners & GMS, well why wouldn't they be against the Pats? Duh! It's their job to thwart our ambitions. :rocker:

It's like wrestling. Hulk Hogan was good. Then a bad guy. Then good again. Then people stopped paying attention. The NFL is indeed making a mockery of itself.

Kinda an Eddie Murray factor, I'm not big on baseball, but I think he alienated every media member his whole career and they won't put him in the Hall because of it.

I know this isn't the complete story, but I may have gotten part of it, is that what you mean, some little media weasels being vindictive... for sure not unreasonable.

Yes this exactly what I mean, more later. Godell is an employee of the NFL who is a compilation of the 31 teams, I completely agree with your premise here.

1. The Patriot image--until this year, spotless, admirable, just a little too good. The Colts, by the way, have inherited this mantle of sanctimony, which, as we have seen, is risky business.

2. The amazing off-season acquisitions of top players without violating cap rules. It must seem unfair to the rest of the league.

3. The unwillingness of Bill B to give ANY help to the opposition whatever--saying as little as possible, keeping injury matters and other team issues secret, and barely giving the press enough to do its job.

4. The dominance of the Patriots in the first half of the season. Some equate this not with good football, but with bullying, and no one likes a bully.

5. Videogate--a perfect excuse to bring down the leader and, by the way, feel that your team might not have lost if it weren't for this kind of "cheating."

6. The simple appeal of scandal. As the OJ trial and a thousand other events have demonstrated, the public has an inexhaustible appetite for bad stuff, as long as it's happening to someone else. The Patriots make an excellent someone else.

7. Years--beginning with Bledsoe, Parcells and BB--of high quality football in New England, in an era where there's supposed to be parity.

I think this pretty adequately explains what's going on, or at least what has been going on until now. But I think the tide is beginning to turn. The Press, more and more, seems to be willing to give credit where it is due and to look a bit more rationally at videogate.

Will the Patriots be the bad boys of football from now on? I don't think so. There's just too much real class on the team and the organization, the kind of class that draws admiration and imitation.

I have no idea if this puts me out of the mainstream here or not, but I've always thought the idea that the league was out to get the Pats was a bunch of hooey. There's a legit issue of Polian being a member of the competition committee and his sway there, but that's hardly new, and it's not representative of some grand conspiracy.

However, the sports media is the sorriest collection of herd animals I've ever seen walking on two feet. There is so little to actually talk about in the NFL (one game a week, endless hours of talk the rest of the week) that they have to manufacture grand story-lines of good guys and bad guys, and they seem to have this incredible need to make their jobs seem more important than they are. So they breathlessly talk about "scandals" as if they were covering some kind of real scandal of government corruption or something. They can't get over the fact that they're just carnival barkers and sideshow performers there to keep interest in the main stage.

So, they got bored talking about the Patriots Way, the video thing was right in their sweet spot of pseudo-scandal, and they went crazy. Now they are herding along the "Eeevil Pats" story-line and won't let it go. It's kinda boring, but does add a little sweetness to the winning streak.
