Defensive look
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff
From time to time, we'll take a look at defensive snaps of Patriots players. Here is how it looked Sunday against the Colts, with the most notable aspect the low number of snaps for Adalius Thomas:

(note: snaps include 2 defensive pass interference penalties; 1 illegal contact penalty; 1 drawn holding penalty)

S/CB Randall Gay -- 65 of 65 snaps
S/LB Rodney Harrison -- 65 of 65
CB Asante Samuel -- 65 of 65
S James Sanders -- 65 of 65
CB Ellis Hobbs -- 61 of 65
OLB Mike Vrabel -- 60 of 65
DE/DT Ty Warren -- 54 of 65
DE/DT Jarvis Green -- 51 of 65
DE/DT Richard Seymour -- 42 of 65
DT Vince Wilfork -- 42 of 65
ILB Junior Seau -- 39 of 65
OLB/DE Rosevelt Colvin -- 35 of 65
ILB Tedy Bruschi -- 26 of 65
OLB/DE Adalius Thomas -- 19 of 65
S Rashad Baker -- 17 of 65
DE/DT Mike Wright -- 9 of 65
S Brandon Meriweather -- 1 of 65

ANALYSIS: Adalius Thomas was on the field for three of the Colts' 10 series -- the final two of the first half and the final series of the game. That meant he was on the sidelines for the first five possessions of the second half. He played once in a 3-3-5 alignment as a defensive end. His final two series came in the team's 1-4-6 dime package. ... As the numbers reflect, it was a monster effort from the team's defensive backs, four of whom went wire to wire -- Randall Gay, Rodney Harrison, Asante Samuel and James Sanders. ... Hobbs missed a few plays after he was apparently shaken up on a kickoff return. ... Four-year veteran Rashad Baker was the sixth defensive back over rookie first-round pick Brandon Meriweather. ... One factor that might have contributed to some of the strong pass rush the Patriots generated late in the game was how players were conserved along the way. Rosevelt Colvin, in particular, seemed to be fresh and it makes sense -- he played just 11 of 36 snaps in the first half -- and only six of the first 12 in the second -- before his strong finishing kick in playing 17 of the game's final 18 snaps.

BB did a very good job of rotating his defensive players in this game and keeping them fresh. The Colts probably thought that our guys would wear down like they did last year.
Limiting the snaps of the front seven worked. Good Job BB. :rocker:

Only problem with Adalius is that he is playing hurt - - he ran like Yastrzemski circa 1982 at the tale end of that Addai TD. The bye comes at a GREAT time for him (and Ben Watson BTW). If those two can come back in 2 weeks healthy, look out. We'll be debating "running up the score" for the rest of the season.

Regarding Meriwether. Bad news. Bad news.

Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How is that "ouch"?

Rookie defenders typically don't see much time or make a huge impact on this team. Combine that with the fact that safety is one of the deepest positions and you can draw your own conclusions. Meriweather is playing on STs coverage units.

It also appears that James Sanders has a lock on one of the safety positions. Atta boy.

You probably had the same reaction during Warren's first year.

Why doesn't Vrabel get more recognition???????

2nd round draft choice Eugene Wilson says hi!

Apparently you don't know the meaning of the word "typically."

If it were a necessity, I have little doubt he would be on the fast track.

I don't know but I recall Gay and Hobbs playing plenty early on as Pats players.

My concern is that JAG Baker is playing ahead of Meriweather this late into the season.

Right, and the depth IIRC was pretty thin at those spots. If we didn't have any safeties, I'd think we'd be seeing Meriweather a lot more.

You may also be underestimating Baker.

2nd rounder, CB converted to Safety within one week, started the entire season and played better than he has played ever since.

versus

1st rounder, Safety playing his own position seeing 1 snap out of 65 (and not a heck of a lot more in the other games) while someone named Rashad Baker had 16 more snaps in his place.

I don't want to read too much into it either however I would like to see him out there more. Eugene Wilson played right from the begining. Granted we are a bit more stacked than his rookie year but it is dissapointing that BM hasn't passed Baker in the PT department.

Again, you're missing the key point here. If we didn't have ridiculous depth, it may very well be a different story.

It is a bit hysterical how quick some are to overreact on this forum.

Folks are kidding themselves if they do not read something awry in the lack of PT for Merry. BB believes in rotation. He wants fresh players at every position where feasible. Apparently it is not feasible to play Merry at CB (note that Gay was in there EVERY down) or at safety where Baker has apparently exceeded expectations. Same was true in the Skins game. Originally I just thought BB was bringing him along slowly but this season with the blowouts there has been PLENTY of opportunity to insert a rook into the D. It hasn't happened. There must be something that is NOT happening during the weekly practises.

And if the next rationale is STs, I noticed that everyone's cut bait Eckle made a huge ST tackle Sunday.

It's quite possible that he's been slow to develop at the NFL level. I just don't think we can read much into the situation at this point.

Everybody develops at a different rate. Maybe by the end of the season, this discussion will be irrelavent. Who knows? We are all still waiting for Maroney and Chad Jackson to break out. Maybe we should all practice a little patience.

Well, Wilson is now out.

I saw Baker toil in the Bills secondary for a couple years. It wasn't pretty.

That's ALL I'm reading into it. But that is not very good if so. He's a 1st round pick.

Well if last game is any indication we can read that he's not ahead of journeyman safety (Baker) at this stage of the game.
