After making the first down, Welker dove to the ground and rolled out of bounds. The official made the winding motion to keep the clock rolling. As it turned out, it was a big play. If Welker had gone out of bounds, because it was in the last 5:00 of the game, the clock would have stopped. That would have required the Patriots to run another play before the two minute warning, which would have meant they would have needed another first down to avoid punting it back to the colts. In other words, if not for that play, the Colts would have gotten the ball back with 30 seconds or so, unless the Patriots made another first down.

I don't understand the rule here. I have actually seen that play called two different ways. Welker was not down by contact when he rolled out of bounds. Why does the clock keep going? Do any of you amature refs understand the rule well enough to say, because I have definitely seen it called the other way. A "passer" can, by sliding feet first, immediately end a play. That is, the passer can, by giving himself up, end the play, and the ball is marked at the position it had when he started his slide. This is a quarterback protection rule. Similarly, a player fielding a ball in the end zone may take a knee, which terminates the play immediately, even if he is not down by contact. Otherwise, any other player remains eligible to advance the ball until he is either downed by contact, or he has demonstrated no intention to move the ball for such a period of time that the ref decides to blow the whistle to avoid an injury. (You see this sometimes when a player has recovered a fumble and falls on it with nobody else around and then just curls up around the ball -- sometimes the ref will blow the whistle to keep him from getting speared.)

But what is the deal with the sidelines and clock stoppages? Seemed odd yesterday.

Re: The Welker 3d play at the end of the game

Hmmm...you post a good question here. If I recall, a Colts player made contact with Welker as he was making the catch (can anyone confirm or deny this?). In that case, by immediately throwing himself to the ground, he could be ruled down by contact.

Either way, it was a tremendous, heads up play by Welker. That guy is not only a slippery SOB on punt returns, but he is a smart football player.

Too smart for Miami (see Morris, Sammy also) but he fits in perfectly in NE....
and they didn't think he was worth a first round tender............
Just my $0.02,
PS Aqua- save whatever reflexive response you've got telling us how he's not that good.....
it will be ignored.....

The fact that he dove down to the ground is the key reason the clock continued to run. If, Welker had just run out of bounds than the clock would have stopped. At first I thought they should have stopped the clock, but then I realized it was the right call, and told those around me about what I believe the rule is concerning this.

Pretty damn heads up play by Welker.

I wasn't going to until you personally adressed me. I don't see how you can figure out that there is such a thing as a trade that works well for both teams. We needed help on the line and we got it for Welker with a damn good center in Samson Satele. The trade was very well worth it for Miami.

Yes. You can "give yourself up" by going down intentionally and you're considered down. Welker did exactly that and that's why the clock kept moving.

There was a play a couple of years ago in a 49ers/Rams game in which the 49ers were driving for the game-winning FG. The 49ers had one timeout and were trying to get in range. A WR (Lloyd? I forget) caught a ball in the middle of the field in FG range with a few seconds left. He tried to break free for the TD, but got taken down as time expired and they lost the game. Commentators were going on and on about what he should have done: The moment he caught the ball, he should have dropped to the turf, intentionally giving himself up on the play, then call a timeout despite nobody touching him down; You can do this when you give yourself up. This WR not understanding the rule cost the 49ers the game. Welker understood the give-yourself-up rule and iced the game.

Regards,
Chris

Welker demonstrated his intelligence by plopping down on the ground on his butt.

:D :D :D

that was definitely a cool play and a big reason why i like welker so much.

you could just tell the way he got down how damn excited he was, it looked like he was going to bounce off the ground... he was really pumped.

smart football player who isn't afraid of anything.

He makes me want to change my first name to Wes.

I am sure that about 10 people told him going into that play: "if you catch it, stay inbound. Not to take anything away from him but it was obviously driven into everyone's heads who had a chance to make the play."
