Eugene played absolutely great during the early part of his career but he has not been worthy of anything since then,It seems that once Harrison went down in 2004 he was just out there playing a position and not much of a factor noteworthy of any big contributions.

Not only is he not performing to a great level IMO,He is becoming injury prone and has been out of the lineup more often,Of course injury cannot be stopped and you can't blame a player for not playing because of it,but is he really worth the dollars next year when his contract is up?

I say let him go as Sanders has become a nice little player and Meriweather at least has potential to be good and we can always pick up another FS in FA or the draft.

SO the question remains...Is Geno worth keeping and clogging up more cap space next season? - He was $2M against the cap this year.

(BTW: Since this team is playing so great and things like Wilson's below average performance is kept out of conversation by the work of the WHOLE defense ,I just thought we might talk about some belly aching things instead of just how great the team is as a whole)

If he was so bad, he wouldn't have been the starter on opening day. I think you have to resign him, especially since I think this may be Rodney's last year. Sanders is a fine 3rd safety who can fill in with injuries, but Meriweather is Rodney's replacement. Who's going to be Geno's? Randall Gay? Unless you can get an Adrian Wilson or someone, I think you have to stick with what works.

Negative! Eugene Wilson has not been the same player ever since he broke his arm in the Super Bowl.

He was the starter on opening day not becasue he has been so brilliant but the fact that he has been integrated and familiar into this system the most of all the rest of the Safeties and who would BB have put out there,A rookie Meriweather?

And who are you going to put out there next year? Sanders-Meriweather? It could work, but it's a step down, I think. I'd rather have Wilson-Meriweather with Sanders available to fill in. I don't think Wilson is going to come at an exuberant price tag because he hasn't been playing much the last couple years, a fact the front office can use to their advantage.

Randall Gay has played superb this year,Everytime a big tackle comes up usually when Gay is in the game his number is hovering over or near the tackled WR or TE

IMO, they let him walk. They need the compensatory draft pick.

Geno can be a great player. He played great in the playoffs when we won the Super Bowl the second time.

I disagree totally with the idea that Rodney might stop playing anytime soon. He is going to be hitting people in the mouth for years to come on this Pats dynasty!!!

Agreed. I love Randall Gay. Good in coverage, better in run support. Sure tackler, which can't be said for Asante. But he's better off covering the wide guy while Hobbs takes the slot guy. And if Samuel leaves, there's no way he can move to safety.

If at S we have Gay,Meriweather,Sanders and maybe a big name available FA we should be fine,If Harrison decides to stay another year even better.

Randall Gay is an awesome player!! What a sure tackler! Knack for fumbles, both forcing and retrieving. Big time player!!!

Even if he is, he'll be sharing alot of time. His glory days are behind him. He's lost alot of speed; age and knee problems have slowed him down considerably, and he's not elite anymore.

Yes, Gay can play safety. But if Asante leaves next year, they'll need him to play corner, and I'd rather have him at corner anyhow.

I think Samuel stays - I think the Patriots do not want to rebuild that secondary at the corner spot,I think Hobbs is good but not a leader-type guy,The corners would be a weak spot definately and the safeties would be even more responsible for making plays.

Right now I never thought I would say it but Randall Gay is our BEST Safety when BB sends him out there at the position.

Gay and Samuel are the main reasons thus far that the Patriots have kept this secondary playing at a championship level,Samuel is back earning the money he deserves and Gay will be looking for more $$ soon.

I've always felt that Gay was a craptastic player.

As long as Geno doesn't ask for big money, I don't see why we wouldn't keep him. He's still fairly young and he knows the system. 2M seems to be the right price for an experienced veteran. Besides what do we do when Harrison retires? We'll need someone to plug in for him.

I think BB does another Adalius Thomas type transaction and grabs a great FS out in FA land that wants to go to a winning team.

The problem there lies if there is going to be a guy that will fit into this team,Not many FAs can do that, this year was an exception.

If the money's not bad, I'd love to see him play more corner and pick up a JAG safety for backup.

I don't see why he can't play corner, he was considered a low first rounder and hasn't had a chance to prove it since we needed him to switch before he got a chance to show us what he can do. With Gay and Samuel not locked up it seems a win win.

Geno plays well at corner he gets a chance to get a decent contract eventually while we have a high draft pick corner with years of experience in our system.

If he stays at safety, we have a safety who doesn't want to hit like one and he's bypassed and on the road to nowhere career wise.

i think well resign gay easily...then i believe we have a chance of getting asante back...and prob will...

rodney wants to keep playing, but im not sure if he can anymore...injuries and all...

also, im hoping meriweahter can start for next season...but which spot is he better for? FS or SS?

Re-sign Wilson?

Our biggest game of the year is only twenty HOURS away and all people are concerned with is whether or not we will sign the FOURTH safety on the depth chart?

I'm sure this will be a big topic in the days after 1 March next year....

It's just one game on the schedule. They're all the biggest game because they're the next game...!

We love Geno in our house! SB XXXVIII forever!!!!
