The Patriots filled the final spot on their 53-man roster by promoting safety Ray Ventrone from the practice squad today.

The move is somewhat of a surprise considering that Ventrone has not played in an NFL game. The Patriots also could have activated cornerback Eddie Jackson and receiver Chad Jackson, who opened the year on the physically unable to perform list, assuming both are healthy.

The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Ventrone initially signed with the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Villanova in 2005. He spent that season on the team's practice squad. He was allocated to NFL Europa in 2006 and started 10 games for the Cologne Centurions, but suffered a shoulder injury that cost him a chance to make the Patriots roster. He ended up spending 2006 on injured reserve, before being released. The Jets signed him this past February and Ventrone was released on the final cutdown Sept. 2. He spent 10 days on the Jets' practice squad before joining the Patriots' practice squad.

"He's thrilled," said Joe Linta, Ventrone's agent. "He's been, and is, eternally grateful to Bill [Belichick] and Scott [Pioli] for giving him a chance a couple of years ago."

If Ventrone is active Sunday, he figures to contribute mostly on special teams.

Good for Bubba!!! Like to see him on kickoffs plow down some of those Colts!!
Interesting move especially since there are a few PUPers ready for activation.

Yeah, the "real" time. Wikipedia uses UTC time, and EDT (or EST as of tomorrow) is 5 hours behind that, or 10:38 AM. I reverted that IP's edits because, of course, nobody had reported it already. I'm guessing whoever made that edit knows Bubba personally.

I had a feeling that we wouldn't see many of the PUP guys until after the Bye week. When they activated Seymour and Mel Mitchel and Eric Alexander got hurt, I thought that maybe the two Jacksons would be activated.
This is definately a surprise, but good for Bubba.

I understand..just wanted to know about that...GREAT news though!! Have always liked him..from his UFA signing onward. I do NOT think he will disappoint at all!! What does this mean about Wilson and Mitchell?? Out tomorrow?? I think so..

Some posters covering his time in NFLE have said that he's learned how to tackle, while still being able to hit like a mule kick. I hope some Colts can testify to that after the game.

Uh, no. He was NOT activated. Instead the Pats filled the open spot on the 53 with Ventrone, a guy who has not played.

Monday they can release him and sign Jackson, Jackson, Dillon or someone else.

Sometimes I suspect BB of adding a guy to the roster just to get him a game check.

But if he makes the 45 -- well, then, there's more reason than just generosity.

I doubt they would activate him and then NOT have him play. IT could be that Mitchell is close to playing but wish to have Ventrone ready if not the case. Good for Bubba!! And maybe they will keep him on the 53..who knows what they will do in thw bye week.
