Chargers' All-Pro linebacker frustrated by lack of sacks

By Kevin Acee

JIM BAIRD / Union-Tribune
The Chargers' Shawne Merriman hasn't had many opportunities to celebrate sacking the quarterback this season, going sackless in four of the team's seven games.

Shawne Merriman was enraged. He was yelling before and after plays. “I'm gonna hit the next (bleeper) in the mouth that I see,” he screamed more than a few times.

He could hardly believe the Houston Texans were running the ball, down by 32 points this past Sunday.

“They just didn't want the game to get ugly,” Merriman said. “I was (ticked) off. I want to hit the quarterback. . . . Hell, yeah, I was frustrated. I was ready to start a fight at any point in that game.”

The temptation would be to believe Merriman is just as frustrated by the season as a whole. And he definitely is frustrated. But he has come to accept his contributions must be varied this season as teams are scheming more than ever to keep him from their passer.

“I get so (angry) because I can't go out there and affect the game with a sack,” Merriman said. “But you go to the film and see they can't run this, they can't run that, they've got to put two people on me, they have to fan, have to chip, they have to do all this stuff. That makes me a little satisfied.”

Merriman went without a sack Sunday, the fourth time in seven games he has done so this season. He has just 5½ sacks all year. Moreover, he has not been around the quarterback as much as he was in 2006, totaling just 7½ quarterback knockdowns and five hurries.

A man who had a league-leading 17 sacks in just 12 games last season faces questions when tangible production drops that drastically.

“People want to see sacks,” Merriman said. “That's what they got me here for. But you don't get to be the best player in the game by just sacking people. That means you're one-dimensional.”

That's a man who has been through some bouts of fury this season. He was upset with how he was being used this season. Dropping into coverage more than ever, he wanted to be going after quarterbacks more.

Such an a-hole.

Perfect illustration of someone who just doesn't get it.
I love it when other teams take away from their game prep by talking

Some of that seems like he's still got roid rage.... quick, someone test 'em again :p

Juiced==Sack Machine

Not-Juiced==Sack 'o chit

Coincidence?

I love the first sentence of that article, where the writer states that Merriman has been sackless in the last four games.

Very true. Shawne Merriman IS sackless.

SHUT THE PHUCK UP MEATHEAD... NO ONE CARES... LAME ASS...

And THAT is why they will NEVER WIN.

can cross merriman of BB's list of players he would like to have. BB detests players who just want to rush the passer without blocking or any such thing.

Players who want to rush the passer without blocking? Did BB say that when he was drunk? ;)

sounds like bill o'reilly started this thread and didn't actually read the entire article

“If I can change the game, if I can handicap the offense in any way, I'm fine with that.”

he even says in the article he doesn't want to be one dimensional

and if any of you braindeads saw the chargers vs texans game, you'd know he tipped the pass that cromartie intercepted and took back for a td

it's weird that the chargers are still in your guys heads, when you're clearly so superior to them, and have even beat them the past 2 meetings....very odd behavior by you guys, spinning articles to fit your preconceived notions and agendas...real odd.

Haha yeah that is o'reilly status. The guy is frustrated that he's not getting as many sacks as last season...what an a-hole huh? Out of his little 5 1/2 though, 2 of them were on Brady in the 2nd quarter a few weeks back.:D

This is the first chargers related post I've seen in quite some time actually... Like since week 2... It was labeled OT, as in, not on the topic we've been generally discussing. I hardly think that counts as "in our heads", and more counts as "hey I found this funny". Nice try though.

BTW, what was the score of that game in which he had 2 sacks? Oh yeah... :singing: :bricks:

Edit: I will say this though... Since week 4, ya'll have started to show up. Good on ya.

i meant to say without being blocked. i have heard him this a lot when players say they can rush the passer if allowed to run free. he has said "ok thats ok, so what do we do about the off line and guards if you want to run free" or something of that sort...

SM said "But you don't get to be the best player in the game by just sacking people. That means you're one-dimensional.” He is a versatile player. And yes you guys would snag him up in a hot second. Don't act like you wouldn't.

It's not pats related, therefore it belongs in the visitors forum. You don't even play us the rest of the regular season. The next possible matchup would be in about 3 months. Why post it in the main forum?

Yeah you guys whooped us but I thought the topic was his individual performance, no?

I will say this though... Since week 4, ya'll have started to show up. Good on ya.

Thanks. Hopefully we'll see you again in the post-season.

to me it doesn't matter really till we show up in a game that counts, and that hasn't happened since 1995 in pittsburgh.

i'm just saying , a fan with an agenda, of any team can spin just about any article to be negative against the player's team/coaching staff.

i half expect one of you to start a thread questioning dungy's morality if he tries to play an injured marvin harrison on sunday lol.

Nah..... they'll just attack his politics and religion again.
