(Carl) Banks remembers a game against Washington when, based on feedback from him and fellow linebacker Lawrence Taylor, the coach drew up an entirely new defensive scheme in a matter of minutes.

Banks said he never played for a coach so ready to listen to his players, so flexible when it came to tearing up one plan and implementing another.

"I've been around some coaches who are so arrogant it's, 'Just run my defense and shut up,' " Banks said. "Some guys are so interested in being a genius, they spend all their time trying to put a square inside of a circle.

"That's the thing about Bill. He forms a partnership with his players. He listens."

Thanks for the find. I think it illustrates why professional football players want to come here. The FACT is that BB ISN'T arrogant. There isn't an arrogant bone in his body. What he IS is true to his convictions....and one of those convictions is that "the media" is there to be manipulated for the TEAM's benefit, not the reporters.

Unfortunately the media generally think "its all about THEM", so when someone makes it hard to them to do THEIR job, the only explaination is that he's arrogant...not dilligent. This article points that out. Thanks again.

I wouldn't go quite that far. That's a little too close to Saint Bill for me.

My guess is that he's plenty arrogant. My other guess is that it expresses itself in ways other than the ability to listen in planning and design sessions.

But I don't expect Bill to be a saint. I want him to coach, not be a freaking saint. I don't care if he's not the big media communicator or that he has the expected arrogance of an NFL coach. I just want him to coach.

Is anyone else a little concerned about Meriweather's progress? I don't expect him to beat out Harrison, Sanders, or Wilson in his rookie year but even Rashad Baker was playing ahead of him against the Redskins.

I sat right behind the Pats Defensive bench and noticed Merry just standing on the sidelines while Baker whom folks here figure to be cut bait when the Puppies are activated played. Maybe BB was just giving my man Rashad one last chance to prove he can play on the 53.

I, for one, enjoy the way BB and the Pats treat the media! Why give anything away? Why waste valuable time on media when you could be looking at more film?

IMO, media coverage is generally uniformative and often inaccurate (just look at the drivel lately with "SpyGate" and "Piling On"). Press conferences are also a waste of time. If you want the real story, watch the games with DVR and replay them a few times.

I'm still trying to mute the announcers without losing the sounds of the game. Can't wait for that option in the near future.

Didn't Sanders play SS last year backing/replacing up Rodney? And Hawkins played FS backing up Wilson. Was the play of Wilson so bad this year that they needed to get Sanders on the field and converted him?

Wilson went on IR last year after getting injured at Buffalo. In the playoffs, with Harrison out, Sanders started at SS and Hawkins started at FS.

As for this season, I believe Wilson got dinged up against the Dolphins and missed most of the second half, and he was inactive against Washington the following week. But before the Dolphins game he started and played most of the snaps. Against Dallas, I was in the stands and I noticed that Harrison, Sanders, and Wilson were all out on the field together at the same time for the majority of the game and in fact Sanders was usually the FS.

Actually the Jets defensive players designed a few blitzes this week and Mangini used them on passing downs. So yeah I can imagine it.

it appears that Geno Wilson will be the only Defensive player that is unavailable for the Colts game. He was also missing last year in the AFCCG.

It all went downhill for him when he had that special teams injury in the superbowl. I think up until that point, he was on the BB fast track. I do believe he missed the second half of the Eagles game and I have never seen him as aggressive or effective since. Although I can not say myself, a lot of people said he never really knew what to do out there when Harrison was not in the game.....

Good article which hopefully will help stem the tide of evilness from the mediots. What I do not get is why the media does not ask the questions that work with Bill; i.e. get him to talk about the opponents strengths and then ask a second question around an intelligient way to neutralise one of them. I have seen him go from spending 3-4 minutes talking football with one reporter doing this to then spending the next 10 minutes giving 1 liners to idiotic platitudes from everyone else in the room. Maybe if they bothered to understand the person they were interviewing (what a novel concept), they would have more success gaining information.

As far as Merriwheather's progress; apart from (1st round) RBs, I do not think Bill likes to play rookies period. Does it happen; yes. But usually only due to injuries or towards the end of a season with a player that has really caught on. Especially on D, this is a team based on veteran savvy and so far there have been enough (uninjured) DBs in front of Merriweather to give him a good chance to learn this defence slowly.
