STEVE YOUNG's SKELETONS IN THE CLOSET

The complaint: Young said on ESPN Monday that New England’s big victories are tarnishing its image. Apparently, he pines for the days when the Patriots were a “lucky” team manned by a bunch of “overachievers” who squeaked out close wins. He also implied some sort of psychoses on behalf of Bill Belichick this year.

New England’s big margins of victory are the result of Belichick’s “insecurity from spygate,” said Young from behind the desk on ESPN.

The skeletons in the closet: Maybe Belichick is feeling the same kind of insecurity Young felt after playing second fiddle to Joe Montana in the hearts and minds of San Francisco football fans – the same kind of insecurity that caused Young to throw a record six TD passes in Super Bowl XXIX, the last in the fourth quarter with his team sporting a comfortable 42-18 lead against the overmatched 11-5 Chargers.

Young in the ESPN segment also lamented getting his *** handed to him by the Bears back when he was with Tampa Bay.

Indeed, the Bears did beat the Bucs 48-14 back in 1986, Young’s second and last year in Tampa. But he conveniently failed to mention San Francisco’s 52-14 deconstruction of the Bears when he was with the 49ers in 1991.

Finally, Young also kind of forgot to mention how the 49ers treated the woeful Falcons during his tenure in San Francisco: which is pretty much the same way you treat the water in your toilet bowl.

Here are just some of the scores of the San Francisco-Atlanta series during Young’s tenure leading the post-Montana 49ers:

1992 – San Fran 56, Atlanta 17
1992 – San Fran 41, Atlanta 3
1994 – San Fran 42, Atlanta 3
1994 – San Fran 50, Atlanta 14

You know, if the 49ers hadn’t hung 16 fourth-quarter points on the Falcons in that 50-14 tune-up for their Super Bowl run, maybe it wouldn't have tarnished San Fran's image so drastically.

I did some more research and here are my results that didn't make the radio:

Steve Youngs’s regular season career as a starter 1991-1998, during that time frame:

SF scored 50 points or more: 4 times

SF scored 40 points or more: 13 times

SF defeated opponents by a margin of 30 points or greater: 14 times

I remember Steve Young going on and on ranting about the "Cheating" by videotaping, when his camera mate, The Tuna wryly observed that it was well known that the 49ers scripted their first 15 plays, when he played there.

Tuna thought it was extraordinary, bordering on incredible, that the Giant's radios ALWAYS went out on the first play, when they played the 49ers. And didn't return, until after the first fifteen plays were run by the 49ers.

Young looked at him, and turned beet red, and then SHUT UP!

The difficulties faced by the Patriots when opponents keep giving the ball back are not that different with the situations faced by Steve Young's 49ers teams. At some point you try to burn up the clock and you keep ending up in the endzone due to the ineptitude of the other team. What's a coach to do ??

Many of complaints about Steve Young are legitimate, but a few of the references are distorted. Steve Young was on the bench with about 12 minutes remaining in the 49-26 Superbowl win over San Diego leaving Elvis Grbac to finish the game. The 49ers didn't score after Young left.

Prior the 52-13 game in 1991 against Chicago both Montana and Young had been injured. The last touchdown was thrown by the 4th string QB, Bill Musgrave when SF was playing mostly 3rd string players. (The 3rd string QB was Steve Bono.) The Bears defense was so bad that night they couldn't stop the 3rd and 4th stringers.

Nevertheless, Mike Ditka got off on a rant after the game on national TV. The loss resulted in Chicago having to play a wild card game, instead of having a week off and playing at home.

The one concern the Patriots should have is that neither Matt Cassel nor Matt Gutierrez is ready to manage the clock in a game that the Patriots already have in hand. Belichek made the right call sending Brady back into the game after Cassel threw an INT for a TD. Apparently most of the press doesn't get it, the Patriots need to develop a competent backup for Brady and until that happens he will stay in the game and the Patriots will continue to score.

If the other teams feel so bad about getting beaten when they come unprepared, they should quit the NFL and join the LSFL (liberal socialist football league) where everybody is equal, both teams get a win and everyone makes the playoffs.

Sup Jons It's SoCalZX2. I posted on our car site a response to your post there in our NFL thread. I guess I'll state it here, even though you've kinnda covered it.

It's no different then the distorted view of the media / other teams fans about NE running up the score. Brady's been pulled is both big blow outs and left 12ish minutes of managed clock by the backups.

New England also converted a fourth down later in the game, on a pass from second-string QB Matt Cassel, a guy who's thrown about three passes in anger since high school, to Jabar Gaffney, a sixth-year journeyman receiver who has fewer TD catches in his career (9) than outside linebacker Mike Vrabel (10).

Me too. Most media types seem to live by the motto, "Never let facts get in the way of a good argument". It's great when someone does the research and calls them on it.
