Or as Dallas owner Jerry Jones put it: "Not to take anything away from Tom Brady, but I believe that you could put a player in (for Brady) and do what they do at New England and win some games better than you can plug another quarterback in what they do at Indianapolis."

"I personally believe I could make it for a game or two without Brady. But I think it would be a dramatic difference, a drop off, without Peyton Manning out there. It's how he gets out there and runs the checks and everything, gets them in the right plays."
same old story....

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

Not only is it wrong, but look at the source. Sorry Jerry. We supplanted your dynasty, your team, you as the best owner, etc.

Manning sucks. I wouldn't even want that cancer on my team. I actually do hate the guy.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

The logic is that if a team is great and a lot of people could get the job done, then the star player cannot be the best, etc.

It's a bad argument. If the Patriots were the greatest team ever, that still wouldn't negate the possibility that Bready is great.

Consider what would happen if the Pats and Colts swapped Brady and Manning. I believe Brady would find ways to get as much or more from the Colts offense than Manning would do in New England. No doubt manning would win the games he was expected to and make the plays the way they were drawn. what he wouldn't do are the 2-4 creative plays each game where Brady and his receiver have an uncanny knack of knowing what each is doing.

Put either of them on the Chicago Bears and 9 times out of 10 Brady elevates the balky offense more than Manning would. Brady has won without a star studded cast in the past, Manning has done less well when the players were not top notch.

If Jerry Jones thinks that Peyton's game is at a higher level than Tom's then he's on an island with a handful of ponies.

Personally, I rate them about even except when they are under pressure. I think Brady handles it better than anybody since Marino. They both possess that little shuffle that buys them the time, and neither ever seemed to panic while doing it. I watch the feet, and in Peyton's case the feet seem a bit jumpy in there. Tom just never seems to panic, even though he may be shuffling to save the game. Tom seems to be within himself at all times. Maybe it's an illusion, but it's a pretty good one.

I don't really care if Peyton doesn't get the style points and I'm not sure how much that counts. What does it matter if the guy's feet are skippy if he still gets the job done?

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

I think this might be correct. The Pats are a better team without Brady than the Colts are without Manning.

I don't think that's how he meant it because of the followup sentence.

You're just looking at it wrong. It's more a commendation of BB/Pioli for building such a great team and a slight towards Polian for building a one-player based offense. ;)

My thoughts exactly! The Patriots are the "complete" team!

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

Somewhere, I just can't place my finger on it, I think I've heard this debate before.

I'm pretty sure that Brady wins the debate in some places, and in other places Manning wins. Funny, isn't it.

Someday they will just be HOF QB's looked as the greats of their time.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

The 2007 Patriots supporting cast far outweighs the 2007 Colts supporting cast. THIS YEAR and this year alone, can you make this argument. It still does not say anything about who is better, just who has the better supporting cast right now. Without Brady the pats would maybe be 7-1 or 6-2 without any 17+ point victories, with Brady the pats are on pace to shatter all single season passing records.

That said, Brady has always worked with less and is a better QB than Peyton, period end of story.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

When Brady breaks all of Mannings records, plus some, the debate will be over.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

When Brady has a ring for each finger while Manning retires, the debate will be over.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

I just don't get it.

Manning is born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He has never had to compete for a job in his life, and has always been surrounded by top end talent, whether at Tennessee or Indy. The guy has always had pro bowl caliber players with the Colts. He is without question one of the all time greats.

Meanwhile, Tom Brady has never been given anything, has had to prove himself at every level, and up until this year has been surrounded by average to below average talent. Now the year that he finally gets some talent around him bozos like the author of this article seem to think that anybody can do what Brady is doing or he is somehow shirking the game of football and running up the score.

This season is nothing more that Tom Brady having fun as he is finally surrounded by talent equal to him and is now showing everybody his true talent and potential. Imagine Peyton having Antoine Smith instead of Edgerin James, David Patten instead of Marvin Harrison, David Givens instead of Reggie Wayne. Does anybody think the Colts offense would have been anything like it has the last 6-8 years ?

Brady has squeezed more potential out of average players than any QB in the last 20 years could have squeezed out the talent that surrounded him. Now we just watch in awe as he is finally given the silver spoon that Manning has had for all 10 years in the NFL.

The results speak for themselves and to me just proves how good Brady really is compared to Manning.

Yeah, I don't really understand it either. I have no problem with people who say that Manning is better, I don't consider it an insult to Brady since Manning is an all time great.

But I don't quite understand Jerry Jones here. Take Manning out and everything collapses, take Brady out and the team keeps chugging along? It sounds like the old "system" BS, that you can plug in any QB in NE and have everything run smoothly because of that awesome system. But no one understands that the system is Brady. He's it.

I also think two things affect people who think like Jones (who I think are a tiny minority at this point).

1. Manning's gestures at the line of scrimmage. Seriously, people think he's a super genius because of the hand motions. We know a lot of what Manning does at the line is BS, and it's meant to be BS. That's not to take anything away from the guy, or his audibles, or the fact that he's really smart. But I think some people see Manning back there and are just in awe.

2. Manning's pedigree. Brady's a sixth round pick, and I do think this follows him a little, and it's harder to shake the system QB label when you don't have the background that Manning does. Brady's achievements then are the result of talented WRs, and the defense, etc, not his own talent. Like I said, I think there are very few people who think this way anymore about Brady but there are still some, apparently.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

I love all the "This Debate will be over when" and "Period. End of Story" stuff.

Pick anybody as "The Greatest" whatever, and I'll find you an argument for somebody else. It's a subjective term, open to opinion.

When I'm 100, for my birthday, I'll put a full page ad in the Boston Papers proclaiming "Manning was the greatest, period" just to make some Geriatric Patriot fan throw his bedpan across his room.

Then I'll giggle and drink a Dr. Pepper, because it's the Greatest Soft Drink of all time, period.

Re: Manning : Gold Standard

it's Jerry ******* Jones, is anyone honestly taking what he says seriously? He's probably just still pissed at the ass-whooping that Brady gave him.
