Dungy stands by Cameragate comments
Posted by John Tomase at 12:46 pm

Colts head coach Tony Dungy said he has no regrets over comments he made comparing the Patriots to Barry Bonds at the height of Cameragate earlier this season. Dungy said he was “very disappointed” at the time, a theme he echoed again yesterday.

“I don’t think it was an advantage,” Dungy said. “It’s just disappointing to me whenever anything comes out and the public perception of the game gets hurt, whether it’s us doing it or anyone else. And not because it was the Patriots doing it, but anything, because our game is on top right now and we’ve got a great thing going and we want to keep it going. So it’s disappointing. Whether it’s an injury to a great player or anything, you just don’t like to see those things happen.

“It’s behind us. Don’t think anyone will be thinking about what happened in the past. It’s going to be two great teams meeting on Sunday.”

As for the Bonds comparisons, where Dungy noted the slugger’s accomplishments were tainted and implied that maybe the Patriots’ would be too, he said he had no regrets.

“To me, that’s what it is,” he said. “That was my opinion at the time and that’s what I believe. I don’t think it takes away from anything they’ve done. It’s just disappointing that it wasn’t a good situation for the league or any of the players in the NFL.”

Smart, Tony. Real Smart.

Belichick's sleep quota this week just went from 3 hours a night to 2.

His refrain here seems to be more couching cameragate based on public perception and his disappointment in how that harms the games, and how people will perceive the Pats on the same level as Bond.

He's basically distancing his comments as an outside observer rather than making them first person.

It was a clever way to state his own opinion the first time, and that still holds true.

mind your manners...you are a guest here

Oh shut up please, what did he say this time to get you alls panties in a bunch???

"Some might say that they're lying, cheating bastards who never accomplished anything. SOME might say that. But not me. I'm classy, and quietly strong. they're like Barry Bonds, the cheating pricks."

I'm going to tivo his post-game press conference, make it into a CD, and keep it on loop while I fall asleep for the next month.

Just like that? Gone??

Motivation, this is what this team needs, motivation!

That was maybe the stupidest thing he could do. It doesn't matter what he said. Just alluding to the fact that it happened is enough for Belichick to concoct some sort of bulletin board material out of it. Rodney Harrison has made mountains out of less.

What in the hell does that mean? Talk about speaking out of both sides of his mouth. No, it doesnt' taint what they have done yet I do compare them to Bonds...you know, the guy who's records are TAINTED. Yeah...way double speak Saint Dungheap.

great point solaris........classic double speak

and this whole situation lives on why???????

because BB refused to bite the hook when the media asked him leading questions during week 1. remember BB's reponse, "i made a statement, you've got it in writing, i've got nothing more to say until the ruling comes down" and "its unfortunate the league didn't view the rules interpretation the way i did, it's time to move on". thats all he said.

He dissed the media by saying nothing, leaving the media to speculate wildly, despite the fact that the league announced "no competitive advantage was gained" (in other words....no bonds)

so yeah.......just more billboard material

Run it up Bill. Run it up real good.

I totally agree with this. Dungy has every right to criticize if he wants, but he's being wildly disingenuous here. He keeps making a statement and disavowing it all in one breath, in an attempt to get the insidious remarks out there but keep himself on the side of the angels. That's what political spinmeisters do -- toss out sound bites in the form of "I know some might say the Senator has crossed a troubling moral line, but that's for the public to decide." It's crap, pure and simple. Say what you believe and have the guts to stand by it.

I don't have a problem with what he said and I am BB's biggest supporter.

I've got a huge problem with Dungy's statement. Comparing Barry Bonds and the Patriots, your kidding. Sixty I tell you, SIXTY! Tony Dungy meet William Wallace.

Boomer, your coach speaks with forked tongue. How can you like this guy?

On the one hand he says the Patriots super Bowls are tainted the way Bobby Bonds' HRs are, and on the other he says they are not.

What's admirable about this kind of wishy-washy holier-than-thou behavior. If he had more balls and just stuck to the Barry-Bonds insult, I'd have more respect for him.

I don't think you are his "biggest" supporter. Typically, that would go to the fan who at the very least has a problem with the statement that Belichick is a cheater like Barry Bonds.

This is the biggest bit of bulletin board material out there so far, and it's coming from the HC of the colts. WOW

We were going to win by 4TDs. That just went up to 5. Congrats Dungheap.
