Ali vs. Frazier
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

Colts head coach Tony Dungy was a guest on the "Movin' The Chains" program on SIRIUS NFL Radio on Monday. Dungy was speaking with hosts Shannon Sharpe and Bruce Murray and touched on Sunday's game against the Patriots.

Some of the Q&A, courtesy of the Sirius's media relations staff

Sharpe: “If you look at it, it’s not a Super Bowl match-up, but I don’t know if there’s ever been a more anticipated, a more hyped regular season game than what you have here. This might be, if this was cartoons, this is Godzilla vs. Megalodon.”

Tony Dungy: (laughs) “I think you’re right. I had never been involved in one until last year, the Manning Bowl opening day. That had a lot of hype for the regular season but this has been building for five or six weeks. And, to me, I guess I look at it like when I was in high school and it was Frazier against Ali. Ali was the people’s champ and he had been the greatest and all of a sudden Frazier comes along. But they said now Ali’s back and he’s better than ever. And it was, it was just an unbelievable situation and I think this is the same thing. People are saying, hey, New England was the champ. They’ve been away for a couple of years. Now they’re reloaded. For both teams to be undefeated, it’s great for the NFL, it really is.”

Re: Dungy :Ali vs Frazier

I want the pats to be Frazier and beat Ali. I didn't like Ali.

Tony Dungy on the Pats-Colts: It?s Ali-Frazier

Yesterday on “Movin’ The Chains” on SIRIUS NFL Radio, hosts Shannon Sharpe and Bruce Murray spoke with Indianapolis Head Coach Tony Dungy about this weekend’s match-up between the Colts and Patriots. Sharpe: “If you look at it, it’s not a Super Bowl match-up, but I don’t know if there’s ever been a more anticipated, a more [...]

Re: Tony Dungy on the Pats-Colts: It?s Ali-Frazier

well he offers his thought on the running the score up...i liked the way sharpe asked the question.
Sharpe: “[People] are saying [the Patriots] are running up the score. I said you’ve got [Redskins head coach] Joe Gibbs who is making $6 million a year, you’ve got a defensive coordinator that is making $2.5 million, you’ve got an offensive coordinator that is making $2 million a year. It’s not Bill Belichick’s job to keep the score down. It’s his job to put his team out on the field, run their offense and it’s your job to stop them.”

Dungy: “That’s the way I look at it. Everybody does what they can do to get their team to play the best that it can be. Sometimes you need to work on things. Who knows what’s going on in that coach’s mind? So I’ve never worried about that. I’ve always felt that way, that it is our job to stop them. Sure, you worry about your quarterback getting hurt or some of your key guys. I don’t think anyone in the NFL worries about that. You have to go out there and play the game, you play for 60 minutes.”

Re: Tony Dungy on the Pats-Colts: It?s Ali-Frazier

Well, considering that Dungy's team has done it in the past, and that he's witnessed his team overcome large deficits, it doesn't surprise me that he feels that way. Good coaches understand BB's thinking much more so than irritated, whining fans.

Re: Tony Dungy on the Pats-Colts: It?s Ali-Frazier

Plus he's not about to say, "yeah he's running up the score and it's classless" less than a week before the Pats play them. That's why he forbade his players from talking about the game until Wednesday, he's afraid they might say something to make the Pats angry bwahahahahaha.:enranged:

Not even close....

Oh really? I beg to differ....

The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

Show me a champion who is as dominant, provocative and socially significant as Ali and I'll concede. Until that day Ali is the greatest athlete who ever lived. I won't be holding my breath.

Re: Dungy :Ali vs Frazier

Come on guys.

Frazier represented the establishment.

Ali was the incredibly talented anti-establishment guy.

How could we NOT be Ali in this analogy?

Re: Dungy :Ali vs Frazier

ALI was not only the greatest athlete of the last Century as voted all around the world but the greatest living Ambassador to the United States of America. He is loved and idoled wherever he goes. God Bless him. Peace.

I too think Ali was the greatest athlete of all time. Easily the best boxer of all time regardless of weight-class. All the experts have him as the best hands-down...it surely wasn't Rocky Marciano if that's what you're thinkin'...you from Brockton?

What are you smokin?

I was actually a Joe Frazier fan back in the day (I'm 48). But I've come to love Ali as a boxer, a man and for his courage. He is certainly a great American!

Re: Dungy :Ali vs Frazier

Godzilla vs. Megalodon? Uh, must have missed that one.

Did he mean Mothra, maybe?

Can't believe I'm nit-picking about Godzilla movies.

I stopped likeing Ali when he made fun of Frazier for being "too black" and compaed Frazier's African-appearing features to a gorilla.

Frazier grew up surrounded by poor blacks. Compared to Frazier, young Cassius Clay grew up rich and pampered.

Ali was a great fighter, no doubt about it. I just wish he hadn't acted so white when dealing with Frazier.

Has to be one of the best, right up there with Jim Brown, Michael Jordan and the best of the best of all time.. he was a great and entertaining fighter, when the fight game had relevance.
