I'm sure if he's playing it's because he's OK. The NFL's monitoring concussions too carefully this year for this to be rash decision.

So our guys get fined for failing to properly buckle their chin strap which could help prevent a concussion while other teams can play players with concussions?????
Strange

It's OK - apparently Tony and Polian got it passed through their committees

Sooooo! Can I look forward to the Petter King MMQ whereehe says that playing Marlin Jackson after sufering a concusion is a a disturbing indicator of the way Napolian and St. Duncy run their oraganisation and how free agents will not want to sign with them? If I'm a Colts fan I'm praying he does. When he wrote that about the Pats they went on and had a pretty damn good offseason. But I'm biased of course.

Indianapolis Colts cornerback Marlin Jackson will return to action against the New England Patriots in Week 9 despite suffering a concussion in Sunday's win over Carolina, reports NFL Network's Adam Schefter.

This is indeed odd. The way it is written is odd as well,
"Jackson met with doctors on Monday and felt sufficiently recovered to where the Colts now fully expect that he will play against the Patriots."

They just don't lazily go by the mantra, "well, I feel sufficiently recovered".

If he was in fact diagnosed with a concussion, my guess is he doesn't play.

I wish they would develop better helmets to protect these guys. If I were a FB player, I'd wear that cap like Young wore for awhile, no matter how silly I looked. There was an article posted on IndyStar related to new FBall helmets they are currently testing that will supposedly help the cause.

Slippery slope here. Freddy had one, Utecht had one, now Jackson. IMO, they came back too soon, and are jepordizing their future by not sitting out longer.

Come on, let's not pretend that all concussions are the same, and let's not pretend it's correct to throw Dungy under a bus over NOTHING.

Totally and completely bogus. If you get a concussion, you shouldn't return to action for at least 2 weeks...regardless of the severity. Keiaho suffered a concussion a month ago, missed the TB game, then had a bye, played against JAX, suffered a setback (supposedly in practice), missed the CAR game and is expected to play against the Pats. I'm sure Keiaho was "OK" after 2 weeks and look at him now.

I think most of the junk thrown at Dungy on this board is crap, but these decisions are all his. He played and he knows the potential outcome for players with repeated concussions...and we are just discussing KNOWN concussions. How many times has Keiaho or Jackson or any other player gotten their "bell rung" and just shook it off?

People shouldn't be drooling in their oatmeal when their kids are getting ready for middle school. All coaches, including Belichick, have to take personal responsibility for this. The culture of concussions (knowledge and awareness) has changed and that just raises the responsibility.

The doctors giving clearance for these players work for the NFL. The NFL has made it clear that a player suffering a concussion can return IN THE SAME GAME if he can pass basic cognitive testing...which is contradictory to every other medical opinion on the planet.

Dungy knows this. Belichick knows this. Everybody knows this. Sending a player out who has had 2 concussion-related incidents in a month (Keiaho) and another who is practicing 3 days after getting knocked out of a game with a concussion (Jackson) is risking their long-term health. If you question this, you don't know what you are talking about.

So these players are Dungy's responsibility on Sunday and no amount of team doctors and their medical clearance can change that. If they do play, I really hope they avoid any jarring hits. The worst case scenario is too high a price for any game...even this one.

You have no clue and need to stop talking about this subject. Read up a little on the subject and come back with something to offer.

Was that the helmet that had that "foamy" layer on top of it? The concussions really are getting more and more common and need to be addressed.

Maybe you would know: What's the deal with that giant helmet the quarterhick wears? Also, if your team gets obliterated Sunday, will you still be here posting?

Are you a doctor or did you just pull 2 weeks out of your ass? What if I say 3 weeks, or 1 week? Or two days? Are those numbers any more or less real than your two weeks? The rule is nobody goes in with a concussion until a doctor clears them. If he's going in, it's because the doctor cleared him, else said doctor will be taking advantage of the NFL's new whistleblower policy.

Sorry, a concussion is a concussion. I don't care who it is, you should not be playing again so soon. And even if this were (gasp) Tom, I would say the same thing. This is a game and I won't sacrifice the rest of these guys lives for it.

Frankly I think the NFL is mostly blowing smoke. The Lions let thier QB back in the game after a concusion. I haven't really heard much about any team holding a player back because of a concusion. Trent Green is a different case because he's had so many.

Yeah, that's it. I assume they are developing new stuff all the time, just haven't come up with a practical piece of equipment yet.

I think Dungy is sanctimonious and an iffy-at-best Christian (due to his homphobia), but there is simply NO WAY he's putting a player in a dangerous situation. The NFL wouldn't let him, either. This is a non-story and a silly thread unworthy of this site.

I wonder. Players are certainly bigger, stronger and faster today, but underreporting was absolutely rampant in the past.

It's kind of like the statistics that show that child abuse skyrocketed after laws were tightened up and attention drawn to it. Of course the real change was that people were bothering to report abuse to the authorities--beating up your kids was no longer considered OK. Today, teams are finally starting to realize that returning to a football game with a concussion isn't OK.

BTW, having absolutely no knowledge of Jackson's health status, I have absolutely no opinion on this particular situation.

Apparently in Indy, running up the score (if your not the Colts) is alot worse than playing guys with concussions.

So you have to be a practicing professional in a field to be able to offer observations on a subject? Interesting...

The last standard practice for dealing with concussions that I've read about is from 1997. There are 3 grades of concussions, though grade 1 falls under the "bell rung" category and probably wouldn't be widely reported as a concussion. Even under the 1997 guidelines (before the long-term effects of multiple concussions and link to Alzheimer's was fully understood), a grade 2 concussion with no previous (even grade 1) concussions called for a week of observation with no symptoms, at rest or with activity, before returning to practice contact...much less a game.

Recent studies (which the NFL disputes) calls for even more restraint than that. Not as much with a first concussion, but really harping on multiple concussions in a short period of time or prolonged symptoms.

There is a great site that allows you to search the Internet for lots of stuff (I am a practicing professional in THAT field so you can trust me). Try reading a little about this subject since it is timely, interesting and important. Knowledge is power.
