Possible Reason Patriots Don't Let Up

Is it possible that the Pats, disgusted with the way the NFL capitulated to the Colts whining when they made it virtually impossible for defensive backs to cover receivers, decided to take matters into their own hands by scoring ridiculous amounts of points? I'm sure a defensive guru like Belichick is appalled at how slanted the NFL is toward offensives. Maybe they're doing this to swing the pendulum back towards the defense being able to compete. I find the games annoyingly one sided. Defenses have no chance. Something needs to be done and maybe the Pats are hoping to force the NFL's hand.

Side note:

The NFL has a number they like to keep scoring around. I believe it is 42PPG (both teams combined). I think they tweak the rules annually to keep this in order.

That's one possibility.

Another is that BB is P.O'd at Goodell (and Goodell's close friend Kraft, for that matter) for forcing him to accept the national butt whipping he got for Cameragate while not allowing him to publicly fight back with 33 years of his insiders knowledge about what ALL the other teams pull.

I believe that this is man who is hiding a burning rage.

I do agree with shmessy about a burning rage...inside..but as much as he is POed against Goodell and what Mangini did, I also think it's against the CCommittee and Polien and how he duped the league into thinking all these offense rules changes were helpful to the league. He's showing how HE will take advantage of teh rules and how it does NOT help the league at all..in the long run. See rgis patriot team will out-Colt the Colts in ALL ways!! With a better offense AND defense!! I think it really sticks it to the league who has followed Polien and others blindly down the road of rules changes...

If you are blowing teams out, it's tough to imagine doing so with the motive to swing the emphasis back to defense to be able to compete, no? I mean, if you are winning big, you're already competing, right?

I never thought of it this way, but I'll bet you're right on the money. If I was a NFL DB, I think that I would be downright livid after the NFL essentially changed the rules to drastically favor the Offense, thus allowing receivers to run inimpeded throughout the secondary. BB too, is a defensive minded coach (duh), so I would think he wants to stick it to the league and beat them at their own game.

This is all about winning, all about never letting up, all about the ultimate test, which is beating the Colts. The more times we perfectly execute the plays, the more likely we well execute perfectly against the Colts. Why should we not run our best plays just because we are winning comfortably? If we sat on the ball, we would be playing half of a game on offense, while the Colts are playing a full game.

Additionally, if we hand it off to Heath Evans three times and punt, guess who has to go out there and get tired and possibly hurt? Yes, our defense.

So, according to the national media, whom BB does not respect, BB should take away meaningful game reps from his offense, and tire out and expose to injury his defense, just so he won't hurt the other professionals' feelings. What a joke. Stupid theories like the ones you guys suggest just perpetuate all this.

One reason the Patriot are doing this is to keep the players happy so as not to mess with the mojo. That's my reasoning anyway. Keep people like Moss, Stallworth, K Brady, Watson, Heath Evans, Faulk, all of them happy. The celebrating at the end of the game tells me that this is true. Yes, these guys play selflessly for the team, but they also like to make big plays. You can't tell me they don't.

There's no doubt we're running up the score IMO.

Two reasons :

1) We need to beat the Colts and the way you do that is by outscoring them. Belichick is always very aggressive against the Colts and has his team used to scoring 40+ which will help this week.

2) The league "ran up the score" on the Patriots on Spygate. They could have confiscated the camera, levied a small fine and made the Patriots red faced. That's a 13-7 win over the Patriots. But the league went for 42-0 with the huge fine, continuous scrutiny, #1 pick. They ran up the score, we're running up the score; too bad.

I think that's a pretty good point. BB, realizing how slanted the rules were, as put a lot more focus into the offense, and has now presented the NFL with the opposite problem of what it had. And, one wonders, what Polian will say now that the Pats have a high-powered offense. With our high-powered offense, BB effectively shuts up the critics of the way he ran the Pats' defese.

Letting up cost the Pats a SB last year and you can bet your last $ that it won't happen again. That's why you see Mike Vrabel not letting up on that fake spike play and it's why you see these Pats players so happy after scoring what is really a meaningless TD late in a blowout game.

The Pats attitude this year is to never let up.

Outside of trying to stick it to the league, I had the same thought. With so many new reveivers, I've been thinking it's just more time to work together and get in sinc.

You mean like your theory that he is leaving Brady out there in a 45-0 game - in the fouth quarter - so the defense doesn't have a chance to get injured?

I agree with this. The NFL passed a series of rule changes or changes in "emphasis" at the request of the Colts and a few other offensive minded teams. As a result, the Pats watched the refs screw them in Denver in the 2005 playoffs and again in Indy last year, both times on pass interference calls in the end zone. The NFL later apologized for both calls. I think Belichick said, "Eff it! If that's the way they want to play then I will assemble one of the best offenses the league has ever seen and jam it down their throats."

One of the interesting things to watch will be how other teams, like the Colts, will lobby the league to go back to the old days (pre-2005) when defenders could breathe on receivers without getting a penalty?
