White Flag

Ok, ok.

So the Zebras got yellow ones.

The coaches got red ones.

Why don't we give the owner's box a white flag that they can hoist up if the going is just tooo tough for them, or when they want to simply ya know, go home?

Wouldn't it be crazy dramatic? Like, the camera would make frequent views of the owner's box when the game was a blowout, the silhouette of a dark and brooding owner could be seen, rubbing his temples, and then one second you are looking at a third and seventeen turn into a forth and 15, and a gasp comes from the crowd, and a flapping white flag signals to all that the game is here by over.

"well johnny, the jets have had a record six white flags so far this season, and at this rate we are looking at 12 for the year. Isn't it amazing?"

Excellent idea!!

It would have to be a huge white flag.

Bigger the better. Maybe all the scribe's phones could like start to play some death march music or something, and huge gongs would be used to mark the tragic end of the sorry quiter's ended football week.

Or maybe each stadium could have like a big ass bell that would toll, and then at the end of the twelveth toll, that big white sheet of a flag would unfurl and flap in the wind, causing children to cry, women to weep, and men to wish that they were part of something worth while in their collective lives.

Or, we could just let these frick'n football players play for a measily 60 minutes of their lives and what ever the score happens to be, well then that would be that and you move on to the next opponent.

But, I like the drama of the white flag. It would be so, ... so ..... Difinitive.

I was going to give the white flag to the coach, but it seemed to me too wierd that he would have like a red flag in one sock, and a white one in the other.

But, it would be great if one of the flag challenged coaches accidentally threw the white flag out when he meant to throw the red one, thus ending the game in like the second quarter!

Ohh, it is just endless.

This is a great idea. If a team feels they have no shot at winning, they hoist up the white flag. Once the white flag is up, if either team feels like no longer playing, the game ends and the white flag team loses. If both teams feel the need to continue, the remainder of the game counts as a scrimmage and no points scored after white flag are counted in the box score.

If we had the above, would any team actually put up the white flag? I doubt yet. They all want it both ways, to complain that the other team is trying to hard, but still want to try themselves.

Simple solution--no white flag unless (A) you're trailing by more than five touchdowns, or (B) it's the fourth quarter.

If we had the above, would any team actually put up the white flag? I doubt yet. They all want it both ways, to complain that the other team is trying to hard, but still want to try themselves.

And thus the beauty of the mighty white flag!

Once and for all, the questions of running up the score, or whatever would be gone. Cowards would never be able to play this little have it both ways kinda game that you allude to. And, the questions at the end of the game would be, "why did you not spare your team good sir, when it was clear that a white flag should have been unfurled?!!" - (the incideous scribe squeeks as other dolts look on.)

Instead of, "hows come ya'l kept a-scorin points at the end thar?"

Because the owner waving a white flag could produce some good juicy situations between the coach-players-front office-ownership that are made for Reality TV!

I like the white flag idea better than the little league mercy rule. The mercy rule is automatic, isn't it? It has to be voluntary. Otherwise, we'd miss out on some dramatic comeback victories (or near-victories, like TEN vs HOU)

The thing is, we have a rule.

These fragile souls get to play 60 minutes of football, most points wins. Pretty good rule if you ask me. Nice and clear. But, for all of those folks who were brought up playing games where you don't keep score eek: ), then maybe this little white flag will make it even clearer.

Exactly. Questions about who is in charge will eminate. Votes of confidence for coaching staffs will seemingly lay on cracked foundations as white flag after white flag come out before the half.

Well, it's been said but, I think an official "white flag" would be the MOST HUMILIATING thing a professional player could face. Imagine, as a player on the field, looking up and the owners box and seeing a white flag hanging out the window. Uggg, I'd rather hold my head high and walk off the field with pride, knowing "I tried, but failed".

Look at the Dolphins. Much as I hate to do it, and perhaps it cause they have lots of practice at it, but they lost with class. They never quit.... even with the game over. Half the skins D, quit on the field.

The closest thing we could have to a mercy rule would be a symbolic "white flag". If the opposing team, were to yank their starters to indicate that "hey, we give up". I would imagine that ANY TEAM (Including the Patriots) would respond in kind and none of this would matter. Thing is, these opposing teams are continuing to try, and if they do, so will we.

cool man, I really was just using your line as a way to get my point across. That the game is just fine the way it is, and if these cry babies don't understand what the object is, then they should go play for, I don't know, the redskins or someone.

I do think that a white flag is a clear symbol of surrender, and if these complainers want the winning team to show some class, then lets have the losers show some surrender.
