If you could resign just one?

Samuel is just so smart back there, but Randy really opens up the whole offense. I would say this, I'd be more worried about Randy's production declining in the coming years.

I just thrilled to have them both this year.

I would pick Moss, though. This is no knock on Zante, who I love, but he can be replaced - Moss can't. Zante is a borderline pro bowler - Moss is the most talented WR ever.

id take Samuel. younger..CB is a harder position to find talent. take Randy away..we have Welker-Stallworth-Gaffney-Jackson and..Brady obviously. Take Samuel away..its Hobbs and Gay. not comfortable

im confident both will be back because Moss came to win. He already dicussed why he took a pay cut and he said moneys not an issue at this point in his career. hes gotten tons of money..but hasnt gotten any rings

We'll probably be able to get the top WR or top CB in the draft at this rate. I'm sure their scouting on those positions will factor into their decision.

no need.

maybe we'll draft a CB but not cuz of Samuel. Hobbs isnt so hot imo and Gay ehh

IS THIS A JOKE???

Samuel is a very good cornerback... over the course of a season he will make some big plays and shut down a lot of defenders.

Moss changes the Patriots from a good offense to the greatest offense in the history of the NFL, by a sizeable margin.

One Moss is worth an infinite amount of Samuels.

what?!

did u not see us go so far with CALDWELL and Gaffney and Brown at WR. Now its Stallworth and Welker added..minus Caldwell and maybe a better Jackson if hes got the playbook down.

Moss is great..love him but we've played with bad WRs..Hobbs is underperforming defensivly while Samuel is SHUT DOWN. take away Samuel and our D is a lot worse.

Let's review this situation logically:

http://www.patscap.com/futureyears.html

By not exercising options on Stallworth and Washington, the salary cap savings for the New England Patriots will be approximately $12 million for 2008. That's enough to sign both Randy Moss and Asante Samuel, especially if Moss is willing to take the home town discount.

Watch the replay of the AFCCG this week and you will see one of the greatest performances ever by a corner. A lot of people say he is not a shut down corner because he doesn't run a 4.2 and he wasn't a high pick...but watch that game and try to tell me otherwise.

I still lean towards Moss, but it is a close call.

Don't fight the hypothetical. ;)

i say Washington is gone. his contract aint small by any means. Jackson is cheaper and better talent.

Why? Is it because I found a logical alternative to your query?

It's like we're having a good ol' Manning v. Brady argument, and you start arguing for Otto Graham...it's just irrelevant to the point being discussed...i.e., if Moss and Samuel want to break the bank, which would you keep.

Not sure what exactly you see out there but Hobbs is the better COVER corner, IMO. Samuel is more instinctive and a bigger play maker, jumping routes etc...

Samuel will command way too much money. It's MOSS over Samuel in my mind, no doubt.

Ummm Moss are you kidding me?

We were ready to play this season with Samuel holding out and we would still be in great shape. Moss turns changes this team from great to greatest ever imo. I can't believe it's even a close call for some people here. I know Samuel is the sexy pick for fans that want to show they're more knowledgable about the game to go with the defensive player but let's get serious. Also, remember Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, etc.? I think Belioli has already shown that they consider these types to be role players rather than "skill" players and they have no problem letting the former go if the price is too high. Branch is a different story because he wasn't the talent that Brady made him look like and they knew it. Plus Samuel is great in our system and is smart at jumping routes, but I'm fairly confident most of that is coaching v. raw skill and we could replace him. If Moss wants some ridiculous contract let him go, but if he really wants to be a Patriot, pay thyat myan his myoney.

Right, Samuel is a role player....that's why he's making $8m this year??? Also, I think saying he is "smart at jumping routes" is unfair - if that were the extent of it, we would see him getting beat deep. That just doesn't seem to happen much.

so far, from the results this year...i would have to say
its gotta be Moss, b/c he lets the rest of the wr's do a lot better...

and i also believe that samuel is a major cog in our secondary...but his effect on eht D is not quite as great...

opposing teams have to gameplan for Moss, or they lose, but on samuel, just dont throw the ball his way, and ur OK...

obviously I'm a little bias BUT ya gotta ink Moss over Sam. Moss is the best receiver in the league and arguably the most dominating of all time. He's still got a 5 sensational years left in the tank after this yr. Over those five years, I wouldn't be surprised if the pats added 4 more rings to their collection (one off year, losing in the AFC C-Ship). The Brady to Moss connection is unmatched.

Really though, I think we could ink both. Randy is all about winning right now, and he has having more fun than he did in Minnesota. So, i think he'll ask for a modest amount. Which will free up cash to satisfy Sam, who I think will ask for ridiculous Nate Clements type money.

thats another key reason to ink Mr. Moss. better believe Wes and Stall to a lesser extent wouldn't be getting as open and free as they are if Moss wasn't on the field. Moss' presence is felt every play. D-Cords rather lock in on Moss and double/triple team him and let the other plays beat them.
