I don't know why American Football fans always seem to think laterals are somehow difficult, I play for an extremely low standard rugby team in England and all of our players would think nothing of stringing 15 passes together, NFL players only can't do it because they don't practice it, if they did it more often they'd find it easy.

If they did it more often they'd find it easy.

I don't know what kind of rugby you play, but stringing 15 passes together in rugby rarely if ever happens, as the player is almost always tackled after the first couple of passes. Possession in rugby is significantly more fluid than in football, so losing control of a ball and having the other team jump on it isn't as big of a deal, as you'll probably get it back later. In football, any turnover is a potential game-changer. It's fine at the end of a game in desperation, but in most circumstances it's just asking for trouble.

I didn't mean fifteen passes before a breakdown, just fifteen consecutive passes in a move without a mistake. And yes, we do fling it about quite a lot.

You are of course right about possession being more fluid in rugby, and I wouldn't advocate playing like that on every play, but these things do happen and I'd have though a well-prepared coach would have at least though about teaching his players to lateral properly.

I got to see some of the recent World Cup for Rugby via Eurosport TV, and it was good once I got the hang of what the teams were doing, the rules (critical to know what is legal and what is not -- BB wouldn't like it )

Anyway, you're right: American footballers almost *never* practice laterals. Coaches hate to see turn-overs and lateraling -- as we can see from the clip you provided -- produces turn-overs relatively often. It's not unusual to see an American football game with no or one, maybe two, fumbles; but in rugby "fumbling" happens very frequently.

So, two very different philosophies: in U.S. football *possession* is most highly valued, holding on to the ball or forcing your opponent to get the ball deep in their own territory; in rugby my sense is that moving the play toward the opponent's goal is most important, regardless of who is in actual possession of the ball, territorial domination is key.

There's no question they were in a lateral formation and that this team had practiced exactly that scenario... and given the scenario they were in, why wouldn't they? Why "just" practice a Hail Mary? Opposing D's are more than ready to defend that - clearly teams are not prepared to defend this.

in terms of a formation it's not as difficult as one would imagine - not that far off from chasing a guy down in a pickle in baseball where player after player are moving/revolving being ready to do their part in a lateral... catch it, move up 10 yards, toss it back 5

good for them for pulling it off... you could almost sense the players from the other team walking off the field saying "what the f*ck just happend? I can't f*ckng believe that just happened!"

13 laterals?? I think the QB caught the ball 3 or 4 times in all of that...what is interesting is that the defense tired quickly and...I think that sooner or later, the team was going to bust one all the way..the field is quite wide..so things like that are possible..but what a PLAY!!!!!
They also showed it on TV...WOW!! I agree..

I'm waiting for the day when defenses finally realize that they don't have to over-pursue to make the tackle; the offense has to come to them, so just hang back a bit and wait.
