That's a shame.

Haven't seen it posted yet on any of the sports websites, but I also heard it on WFAN.

Wow. That blows. So much for trading him in the off-season, too.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

He was the one that complained last week for being taken out last week but he claimed he wasn't injured this may get interesting.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Vilma is a great player. He's completely being misused by the Manjerko. Bad for Vilma. Bad for the Jets. Good for us. I'd love to have him on the Pats, Belichick would know how to use him correctly. He's not much smaller than Bruschi. He's be a quicker faster version.

Mangenius!!!

I hope Mangenius isn't using IR to get a potentially vocal critic out of his locker room as his season continues to crumble.

That was a very strange situation. Mangina said he took him out because of injury. Vilma goes on FAN and vehemently denies any injury, after he already had the MRI on his knee. Says he doesn't know why Mangina took him out the game and there was no reason to. The next day it's reported that Vilma has a possibly season-ending knee injury.

Is this the Jests/Mangina version of obscure injury reports? Odd. Just odd.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Sorry for Vilma.
Delighted for RatMan.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

I heard one of the NY sports writers on WFAN last night, I think it was Canazarro, say that Vilma's back up might be an upgrade at this point because Vilma can't play the 3-4, not because of talent per se, but because of desire. Pretty harsh.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Very strange indeed.

On Thurdsay Mike and the Mad Dog were discussing the situation on WFAN, and Mike said that he had heard that after the MRI it was considered a serious injury, although there were no details on what the injury was (strange in itself). Mad Dog was also piqued at Vilma for saying he had no injuries to force his benching, and obviously he was dissembling. He also went on to say that Vilma was unreliable and that he had misled him in an interview before.

I think that Vilma is very anti-Mangini and is trying to destabilize his position. It sounds like the IR is either the prelude to a trade of Vilma or dismissal of Mangini.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Nothing worse than Jets crashing to earth.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

I wonder what is REALLY going on..I do not think mangnina knows what he's doing...he got lucky last year and this year, he's paying..

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

What a waste of a great player. He'd be a pre-bowler every year if he played for Bill Belichick.

At the end of the day it always remains a business for the players. And the only thing less appealing than playing hurt or through injuries is doing so for a HC you can't stand, and one you think might stab you in the back in a heartbeat to save himself or who you feel isn't necessarily even putting his players in a position to win. So Vilma may have pushed enough buttons to get to IR where he can just watch the continued self destruction from a safe distance without participating further and at the riskk of ruining his career.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Here's what I think happened. This makes sense.

Vilma has a chronic type injury condition which he can play through and which MAY have required post season surgery (or so he thought).

Mangina is sick of him, pulled him, forced him to get the MRI, it came back "positive" for the slight injury he has (but could play through). Vilma says he WASN'T pulled for an injury, which from his point of view is right. He was pulled (from his point of view) because Mangina wanted to pull him. The injury is just an excuse.

He gets put on IR thus Mangina gets rid of him, and that's all there is to it.

Good luck getting FA's to sign there next year.

It could also be that the player was more injured than he thought, he thought he could play through it, but the coaches saw how ineffective he was, pulled him, made him get the MRI, and sure enough, a serious injury. Of course, this scenario presumes that EM knows a little about what he's doing and wouldn't IR a player out of spite. Can't be sure he'd meet those criteria!

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

Almost sounds as if they tried to IR him, or that Vilma isn't buying into Mangini's "hush hush" operations. Really sucks to see a great player like that wasted the last two seasons. I hope he gets traded outta the east soon.

Re: OT:Jets Vilma on IR

IMO Vilma has no injury worthy of IR, and this is a sham. Last week Chris Baker criticized Mangini in the press, and despite the fact he is the team's best TE, he was made inactive for the Bengal game (a close game which the Jets lost). Kendall mouthed off in the preseason and was first "mistakenly" lodged in the rookie dorm at training camp, then traded for nothing. Revis held out, and the Jets ludicrously played hardball, looking for a very unfair contract. Mangini clearly has a Tony Soprano complex. Now Vilma breaks from the party line on his radio station and is placed on IR. If Vilma had truly been injured he wouldn't have been available to reporters in the lockerroom after the Jet game, given the Jets' penchant for secrecy regarding injuries.

IMO what happened was:

Mangini benched Vilma for poor play during the Bengal game. Mangini, backing up his claim to "evaluate the organization from top to bottom", determined that Vilma's play at ILB was substandard and part of the reason the Jets cannot stop the run. He informed Vilma early this week that going forward, rookie David Harris would replace him as starting ILB. Vilma has sacrificed alot for Mangini, changing his style of play, studying day and night, acting as team leader and captain. This was a brutal blow to his pride and self-esteem. Vilma threw a fit, basically quit the team and probably walked out of the facility. To cover up the real nature of events, Mangini invented an injury and put Vilma on IR. Vilma probably could use an arthroscopy, like almost all nfl players, but it could have waited to season's end. This was a total sham, and more evidence the ship is sinking. I still expect the Jets to win this weekend, and D. Harris may actually be better for the Jets at present than Vilma, who is ill-suited to Mangini's defense.
