From Bill simmons' latest column:

By the way, I received roughly 10,000 e-mails asking me to react to Easterbrook's "Good vs. Evil" column this week and zero e-mails asking me to react to the man who screamed at me that I was going to hell as I walked on LaBrea Avenue on Tuesday afternoon. Just so you know, I had the same opinion on both moments: "I'm just gonna keep walking."

The other day a friend of mine and I were talking about how we wanted Simmons to call Easterbrook out. I'm disappointed he doesn't expose the clown.

so he's being a huge p.ussy.

I don't blame him for staying away from it. It's a tar baby.

He cant write what he really thinks without getting reprimanded from the WWL, so he can't write anything at all... one can only hope he takes over Rick Reilly at SI so he can really unload.

It's true, Simmons is still a Company Man and occassionally you can almost feel he's getting pressure from ESPN that shape his opinions.

For instance, I remember reading his take on Sheffield almost attacking that fan at Fenway (in which he was inexplicably sympathetic to Sheff and not to the fan) and thinking "what the hell game was he watching?" before realizing that he was basically just regurgitating what the announcers on the ESPN-broadcast had said.

He is comparing Easterbrook to one of those Crazy Bums on the street that preach and tell everyone they are going to hell. I would say that is a pretty good shot.

He is basically saying that Easterbrook is such a crazy loon that there is no point in even commenting on him. Anyone who is reading Easterbrook or gives a sh!t about what he is writing, IMO needs to have their head examined.

Yeah, but he at least could've used the phrase "crazy douche" in passing while mentioning Easterbrook...

Yes it would've been great to see Simmons tear Easterbrook a new one, which he very easily could've done. But analogizing him to the nut on the street corner is subtle and still effective.

Remember - trying to have a discussion with someone who has given up reason is like trying to give medicine to the dead

Good for you Bill, taking the high road

I'm sure his editors won't let him really rip into Easterbrook.

What did you guys want? He already was pretty critical of Easterbrook after his spygate hack-job. He shouldn't have to have to defend NE whenever Easterbrook gets preachy.

Besides, as hughthehand said, he compared him to a crazy bum on the street. Do you take crazy bums on the street seriously and get worked up over what they say? So why treat Easterbrook any differently?

Why not? The editors don't seem to be concerned with much nowadays.

I'm sorry but Pats need to turn it's collective back to ol' Bill Simmons.
He even went along with the whole cameragate thing. Saying something to the effect that how could BB do this.

Turn your back, Pats Nation. Turn your back on this man.

I think his editors would let him rip Easterbrook. Simmons wrote a rebuttal to a Scoop Jackson column one time, so I think he could get away with it.

It's not necessary in this case though. Pretty much the majority opinion after this Easterbrook column in all circles was "the guy is crazy." Deadspin said it, it was all over the blogs. And Easterbrook was taken to task once already on the website, remember, by the ESPN ombudsman, so what else needs to be said. I think Simmons handled it in a funny way.

OT, but i like his answer to a question.

What if this happened on the Colts and two of their starters came out of the closet as a couple and announced they wanted to get married right before the playoffs, only Tony Dungy is already on the record as being against gay marriage, so the players decided to stop playing for the Colts again until Dungy changed his stance? Now that's a gigantic sports story! That one has everything! You aren't topping two Indianapolis starters falling in love, getting engaged and refusing to play in the playoffs until Dungy accepts their love for one another. Even "The View" would be talking about this.

It was a damn good shot! Upon first reading it, it looks like he's making a pseudo-"no comment" on the whole thing, but after reading it again it's obvious he's saying "Gregg is out of his effing mind!" without actually saying those words.

I bet Easterbrook is pissed at him. Good!

Regards,
Chris

I'm more interested in what the ombudsman will say. She's been critical of his anti-Pats column so I would lie to know what she's thinking now that Esaterbook has crossed the line from overreacting to insanity.

If Simmons still worked for digital city boston, he'd be all over this. Making fun of columnists/radio-personalities was one of his best traits. Unfortunately, when you work for a big corporation, the Man keeps you down.

From his continuing the line of insanity, it would seem she has zilcho muscle at ESPN.
