JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- When the Jacksonville Jaguars decided to release quarterback Byron Leftwich a week before the season, they were counting on David Garrard to stay healthy.

It was a calculated risk then. It may spoil the season now.

Garrard could be sidelined up to a month with a badly sprained left ankle, leaving inexperienced backup Quinn Gray under center as the Jaguars (4-2) try to rebound from an embarrassing loss to Indianapolis while facing the daunting task of playing the NFL's only three-game road trip.

"I don't know that it gets much more difficult," coach Jack Del Rio said Wednesday. "Certainly that's a tall order. ... We've got to work through this and understand we're being faced with a challenge and a little adversity and fight our way through it."

Garrard has a high ankle sprain, meaning he has ligament damage, and will sit out at minimum road games against Tampa Bay and New Orleans.

"It's more likely to be three or four (games), somewhere in that window," Del Rio said. "I don't think it's likely to think he'll be back any sooner than that."

Gray, a fourth-year pro who's known more for his eating habits than his pocket presence, will make his first career start against the Buccaneers on Sunday. The Jaguars worked out Doug Johnson, Drew Henson and Todd Bouman on Wednesday, but they didn't plan to make a roster move until Thursday.

Drew Bledsoe was approached about a tryout but declined to come out of retirement.

"You do what you have to do," Del Rio said. "You deal with the situation head on and you make the best of it. It's not ideal for sure. But that's what we're faced with."

Garrard injured his ankle in Monday night's 29-7 loss to Indianapolis. He tried to play through the injury, but his ankle swelled up considerably at halftime.

Gray struggled off the bench. He finished 9-of-24 for 56 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble. He was considerably better in the season finale last year, completing 13 of 22 passes for 166 yards and scrambling for two touchdowns in a 35-30 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

Asked what Gray brings to the table, running Fred Taylor joked, "probably some ribs, some chicken."

Listed kindly at 254 pounds, Gray spent the last four years working under Leftwich and Garrard while developing a reputation for meticulously studying the playbook.

"The thing that's going to help Quinn the most is not trying to go out there and win the game himself," Taylor said. "That's where we step in, the offensive line, the running backs. We need to do whatever we can to do our job a little bit better and take pressure off him."

Garrard was a big reason for Jacksonville's 4-1 start. He completed 66 percent of his passes for 1,141 yards and six touchdowns without an interception.

He made significant strides in the offseason and in preseason, enough that Del Rio decided to part ways with Leftwich after four injury-filled years.

But in February, Del Rio backed Leftwich as his starter -- even though there were obvious concerns about his mechanics and inability to stay healthy. Had Del Rio decided back then to go in a different direction, the team probably would have signed another quarterback in free agency or considered selecting Brady Quinn in the draft.

Instead, the Jags passed on Quinn twice.

Now, they turn to another Quinn.

"What we need to see is, can he be consistent? Can he lead the team and make good decisions and be productive?" Del Rio said. "This is a new opportunity for him. He hasn't been in this situation before, so obviously we're dealing with some unknown.

"We'll do our best to prepare him and have him understand that we're not asking him to carry our team. We don't want him to put the team on his back. We want him to play his role and do his job and be a good distributor of the ball and a good decision maker. Then, as a football team, we have to rally around him and give our team a chance."

LOL People find it near impossible to believe that sometimes when players say they are done, they are.

Cutting Leftwich was a good idea, they just waited to long and failed to locate a legit replacement who was a significant improvement. Garrard is a great backup, and a marginal starter. He's not a franchise type QB. It's almost comical that Byron put up such a stink about being cut, and chomped at the bit to get poor old Joey tossed in Atlanta only to hurt his damn ankle again in his first start there. Otherwise Del Rio might be seriously looking at getting canned after this season. And he may yet. His game plan to surprise the Colts through the air was assinine even before he lost his starter in the first quarter.

Good for you Drew. My respect just went up.

Ditto. Bledsoe has made it clear throughout his career that when he wasn't good enough to go into training camp as the clear cut starter, he would hang up his cleats. He is holding true to his word.

I'm sure the prospect of suffering serious brain trauma or bodilly injury for a paycheck he doesn't need, to bolster a fan base that cares nothing about him and help an organization to which he has no allegiance salvage tens of millions of dollars for the rest of the season was difficult for Bledsoe to pass up...

I guess Bledsoe realizes he has nothing left to prove and even if he did - that's probably not the best team with which to prove it.

It was a dumb game plan..and with a QB injured fast..really not as a big a win as the Colts needed. I think Del Rio might be headed for the door with the moves he's made...the Jags could sink fast in that division...

He is done because he is not guranteed being a starter.. If someone would come up and say Drew you will 100 percent be the starter if you sign tom, he would have been there yesterday... Drew does not love football that much to come down to jax and hold a clipboard for a couple of weeks.. In fact he had trouble loving football when he was the man...

Indeed, a vast difference between Bledsoe and say, Brady, Favre, Manning, or Vinny.

I think you're wrong. Vinny is the exception, not Bledsoe. I cant' see Favre, Brady or Manning hanging around as a backup for a few weeks.

Bledsoe didn't really love the game even when he was starting. He did his time and then left. Favre, Manning, and Brady are all warriors, and Favre (and likely Manning and Brady) will stick around as starters until the end.

Here's an interesting hypothetical: If we lost both Brady and Cassel to injury and were down to Gutierrez, would you want Bledsoe back if he was willing?

Jesus, if Bledsoe is the answer, it's time to start changing the questions.

Good point, but think about it: The pickings are pretty slim out there for street QBs, even Testaverde is playing. Who could step in?

Come on! If Bledsoe didn't like football as much as you and others say, he would probably love to get paid and stand around all year and not do much as a QB. He might not have been the most dedicated guy in terms of preparation during the season and the offseason which is a knock on him and a lot of players in the league, but I think this was a pride issue not a lack of love for football.

I don't get why so many people still want to knock this guy. He helped this team to get where it is and we just needed Brady to take it the next step. The guy did give a lot of good years to the Pats.

He just didn't want to be like Testeverde, Brad Johnson, and other former starters and be a former productive starter who is making his living bouncing from team to team as a back up and fill in starter. A lot guys do the same thing if they have made their money and not just at the QB position. Not every QB wants to be Testeverde and play into their 90s even if it means being a 3rd string QB or the guy waiting by the phone for the next injury.

Well, it's a predominately rushing attack. I'd probably try to weather the storm with Gray (or even Matt Jones) and find out if he's a legit QB or not. Or some young kid with upside (Andrew Walter if the Raiders release him?). Bledsoe was a horrible QB for the last few years, so I'd dance with the devil I don't know.

There's probably some familiar names we hear quite a bit going from team to team. One of those Craig Nall, JT O'Sullivan, Kelly Holcomb, Patrick Ramsey types.

Also mentioned with those names...was David Greene who is on the Pats PSqd...In fact he was the first player from that group that was mentioned...

Didn't Garrard get 'injured' when a Colts DL deliberately hit him below the knees, which is supposedly illegal? Whoa! Big fine forthcoming!
Oh wait, it was the sainted Colts not the evil Willfork.
My bad.

Heh heh... talk about damning a guy with faint praise... and the above is from a Bledsoe supporter folks..!!

No, because with Drew Bledsoe it has to be done his way. He's just not coachable. I would rather take some schmuck QB cut by 4 teams who is willing to listen to the coaches.

Nope. That's when we activate Troy Brown from the PUP. What do you think he's been doing all season? Learning a new position.
