A.D on Lewis
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

FOXBOROUGH -- Patriots LB Adalius Thomas had strong comments today in response to Ray Lewis calling him a coward. The audio clip of Lewis's words is here, which are in response to this Sports Illustrated article.

"First of all, about the quotes that was on me, I don't think I recall any of the conversation I had, I don't think what I said came out that way. I could be totally wrong. Like I said, it was a compliment of the Patriots. I never downed the Ravens. Anybody that has seen me do an interview in seven years knows my integrity isn't that. If I have something to say to somebody then I'll say it. Nothing that I said was a comment or shot at the Ravens, or none of the players. Actually, I said I had a chance to play with Hall of Fame players that was not in that quote. I went on to name names. Ray Lewis was one of the names I named.

"The only problem I have is the coward comment. To call me a coward, you have my phone number. You can call me. I will call Ray, personally myself. I don't want to sit here and throw [things] back and forth, and make this a media frenzy as far as that goes. I'm bigger than that. I'm better than that. As far as calling me a coward I think that goes to something personal. I don't like it. I will address that with him personally myself. To attack my integrity, as far as that goes, and say you had to make a scheme up for me, I didn't know they made up outside linebacker for me. I really didn't know that. I know he was crying about a big guy in the middle so you can keep blockers off of you. I mean, I don't know if that's a scheme made for you or not. As far as that goes, if you want to criticize your head coach, talk about a coward. You can go upstrairs and talk to him like a man, just like you're talking about me.

"As far as that goes, I'm just here to play football. I'm worried about the Redskins. Ray Lewis means nothing to me, as far as his comments or anything else that he says. I love him like a brother. Other than that, as far as me being a coward, I felt like that was a personal shot. That's the only problem I have with it."

I F-ing LOVE Adalius Thomas.

I remember that a couple of years ago. Lewis forced Billick to draft that big NT in the first round to protect his career standing.

AD just hit him with a VICIOUS uppercut!

Hmm...I kinda wish AD just left it as, "I'm gonna call Ray and we'll work this out man to man, but other than that, I have no comment."

Good point...but he's not a robot. I really don't want to every single Patriots player do the humble act with every single situation. I LIKE to see humanity...faults & emotion...as long as it doesn't involve the team.

And this situation doesn't involve the team.

I agree to an extent, but I think he handled it with enough class.
He also raised a great point about Lewis calling out his own coach when he can walk into the practice facility and talk to him personally.

One big factor you may be missing here.

This wasn't some criticism of an out of town athlete.

Ray Lewis was personally criticizing a former Raven who has DEEP roots in the Baltimore community. His wife taught for many years at a school in Catonsville and AD had many local charitable activities and board memberships.

If Ray Lewis was criticizing LaDainian Tomlinson or someone without the deep family and personal ties to Baltimore, I would agree with you.

As a result, I believe BB probably gave AD a pass on this one because of those circumstances. Think if Willie McGinest was getting trashed in the press by Mike Vrabel.

When I saw this part of the quote I thought he was falling in line with what you are saying, but then he kind of went 180 on it.

This controversy may be good news for the Pats. A.D. is awesome but tends to coast from time to time. This issue with Ray Ray may make him focus even more from play to play, and the Pats will reap the rewards.
