About the only question left to wonder about New England -- aside from the weekly debate about when they eventually will lose -- is whether anybody can actually slow them down. Here's a list of the teams with the best shot at keeping Tom Brady & Co. under 30 points when they meet:

1. Pittsburgh (Dec. 9): The Steelers have the talent and the numbers. Even after Sunday night's 31-28 loss at Denver, the Steelers still rank first in total defense (250.3 yards per game). They are second in the NFL in scoring defense (13.0 points per game) and rate third in pass defense (174.8 yards per game). Defensive coordinator **** LeBeau, in his 34th year as an NFL coach, is getting it done.

2. Indianapolis (Nov. 4): The Colts know the Pats, so there's no fear factor here. The Colts also play Cover 2, which means they're not going to give up the big plays other Pats opponents have allowed. Throw in a hard-hitting secondary led by safety Bob Sanders, and these Colts can measure up.

3. Baltimore (Dec. 3): This game is late enough in the season that the Ravens should be back to full strength. Once defensive end Trevor Pryce and cornerback Chris McAlister return from injuries, this athletic unit will be able to cause problems once again.

4. Washington (Oct. 28): The Redskins have the first thing you need if you want to survive against New England: a talented secondary. With four first-round picks in their defensive backfield (cornerbacks Shawn Springs and Carlos Rogers and safeties LaRon Landry and Sean Taylor), the Skins won't have to worry about being overmatched by the Patriots' wealth of talent. Plus, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams loves the challenge of facing dominant offenses.

5. New York Giants (Dec. 29): Yes, the Giants have a suspect secondary. But their front four -- led by ends Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora -- can create the kind of pressure Brady rarely has seen this season. The Giants lead the NFL with 27 sacks.
• There are some suspicions about the speed of the New England Patriots' defense, especially in the back end. Except for cornerback Asante Samuel, there's not a lot of quickness in the secondary, even more so after the return of strong safety Rodney Harrison to the lineup. And the linebackers haven't made as many plays as one normally expects from a Patriots unit.

Re: ESPN : Last Call

We'll have to let Ellis Hobbs and Randall Gay know that they are slow.

Yea i dont understand how Hobbs isnt considered fast. Gay isnt exactly a turtle either. Sure Rodney might have lost a step but thats really about it.

Re: ESPN : Last Call

I guess just because they know a guy's name makes him speedy. Hobbs is much faster than Samuel (quick is hard to quantify) and Geno probably as well. Who knows about Gay, who has been really good so far.

Did you see Hobbs on Willie Andrews' kickoff return...he caught up to Willie with ease.

Didn't one of them set the record for the longest KO TD in the history of the game?

Man, imagine what he could do if he had speed.

Re: ESPN : Last Call

Last time I checked, the Pats defense was never particularly fast. We won Super Bowls with Ty Law, Otis Smith, and Tyrone Poole. None of those guys are fast CBs. Tebucky Jones and Lawyer Milloy aren't what you would consider fast safeties.

The Pats' defense is based on aggressive and smart play, not speed. You don't need to be fast in the secondary if they play smart and have good pressure up front. Look at Junior Seau. He has lost a step or three, but he has been heads up and making a lot of big plays.

This is just SVN trying to drum up support for the notion that the sky is falling with the defense and undercutting himself by quoting someone who clearly hasn't watched the defense.

Yeah. it appears that the bigger your name, the more dominitivly talented and better you are then everyone else at all aspects.

Really great observation on the part of that writer.

George Clooney is the fastest man in the world. :)

He looked plenty fast when he was setting the NFL record for the longest ever kickoff return.

Re: ESPN : Last Call

ESPN is fraudulent in their research once again!

Here are the combine numbers and/or pro day results for some of the Patriots defensive backs:

Eugene Wilson
Combine 40 yard dash: 4.48 sec

Asante Samuel
Combine 40 yard dash: 4.49 sec

Randall Gay
Pro Day 40 yard dash: 4.38 sec

Ellis Hobbs
Combine 40 yard dash: 4.45 sec
Pro Day 40 yard dash: 4.38 sec

that is not true.iam just posting what is written. If i post a pro pats article then you guys are all "its a great post" . if not then iam trying to drum up support .
I post this stuff for analytical responses, not just "this guy doesnt know anything" response.

Re: ESPN : Last Call

Tebucky Jones by the way was a blazer. 4.45 for a 225 pound guy is fast. Tebucky was a physical freak of nature, but maybe not the sharpest knife in the drawer.

Given that the quote you put in about the defense didn't actually analyze anything in any way resembling reality (As ATippett56's post shows every bit as much as game film does), I'll simply point out that you're full of beans about this.

Gay is far from the turtle ... he may be Moss-Fast.

I think Rodney's lack of speed may influence a lot of people, but really, come on, Gay and Hobbs have wheels. I'm not sure about Wilson.

Agreed! If half the posters on this message board did some research via the internet, we can intellectually dispute false claims by the trolls who visit here as well as delinquent sports reporters such as the worthless Skippy Bayless.

i didnt put in the quote ..it was in the article. People posts tons of quotes saying "x person is an idiot" . doesnt mean they are analyzing it. anyway's relax.. believe what you want to believe , iam not drumming up support for anything .
