This is soooo disappointing. I mean, sure, we have the highest scoring offense of all-time and pundits are crawling out of the woodwork to call us the best team of all-time, but can we really expect to beat the Colts if we don't have the best offense AND defense of all-time? Get real people!!!

This team is just not living up to expectations.

LOL, that's about what I said during the game. The defense is good - but not more than that - right now. But just because the offense is performing at a historically great level doesn't detract from the fact that they're a good defense that will likely look better if it ever actually needs to.

Just wait until you get back Richard Seymour.

Quite a few people under appreciate him. I'm not saying a lot of people but theres definitely some who have said "oh we're fine without him". No...with him we will be dominant on both sides.

Ugh! I just looked at the stats, and after the Dolphins game the Pats have dropped from 2nd to 3rd in total defense!

This is a disgrace!!

LOL Are the idle Colts still holding down #11? If they move up into single digit defense after tomorrow night we might as well concede. :help:

LOL, the D had an off game. But once Big Sey gets back they'll be fine. They've generally played better as the season goes on and the games get more important. Of course being the greedy ba$tard I am I want that #1 D tag as well ;)

Oh me too! Shutouts would be nice ;) , but I would rather have the opposing teams score only thru field goals instead of having touch down. I want our D to be mean and stingy and unfortunately, I don't think we are that robust yet.

But one point on your assumption on Seymour. I think we all by now know that no one (including Seymour) can know for sure when Seymour will play. Could be probably after the bye week also...

Talk about being the victim of your own success, I checked the game stats, and the defense was on the field for over 35 minutes and 70 plays (vs. 51 for the patriots offense), the kind of work load you usually associate with a team getting blown out.

the irony is that the patriots vertical offense is so awesome (they averaged 12.4 yards per pass and 8.7 yards per play yesterday) that the offense takes the field, throws a couple of long passes, mixes in a short run and then, boom, scores and leaves the field before the D gets a blow.

it's a nice problem to have, but in a long season the D is gonna break down against a good team at some point.

Why do some people get such a defensive reaction to criticism of NE's defense?

They have been good so far, but not much more. I believe that a lot of Miami's success this past week was due to factors that won't happen regularly, namely

1) Oppressive heat & humidity wearing down the team.
2) Ridiculously successful offense somehow scoring 6 TDs and losing the TOP battle handily.
3) Some complaceny setting in when Brown went out with NE in command.

All that said, there is a trend line that is not favorable at this time. And every single team - no matter how terrible on offense - has had at least one long, successful drive.

I do expect the team to get better as they usually do with or without Seymour, but they have been helped significantly by the offense. Optimism and concern can coexist.

It has all the potential to be a devastating defense, and seems to show its power in the first quarter, especially the first few series. At Dallas, those first few 3-and-outs made a statement, then later the awful tackling made a different kind of statement. It does seem to be more a problem of consistency and focus than of talent.

Let them get to late November and December then we'll see. Usually this team fires it up about then. (scary thought isn't it:D )

My theory on the defense is that their timing is way, way ff, and it shows on game day. In practice, they play against the greatest NFL offense in history. They are used to playing against that offense. When an offense of mere mortals lines up against them, they aren't used to it. Their timing is off, they miss tackles, etc.

Simple really.

They seamed to get to get faked out of their joke straps when they had us in space too.

There's a difference between getting defensive and mocking outright stupidity. This thread is the latter.

For some reasons sometime i think the our defense is trying to fool their next opponent into a trap. When they're playing with a bad team our D was not as good as playing with a decent or good team...as if they slacked off to show that they have flaws...and so the next opponent uses that film to see the Pats weaknesses and try to exploit it...but when the next time come...The Pats defense is completely different slaughter their opponent. Like give you high hope and step down on your throat.

just my 2 cent.
