A terrific thread of universal fan angst:

http://www.finheaven.com/boardvb2/showthread.php?t=218819

I hate him so much because I liked him so much. I loved watching him out there, knew he'd catch it if it was thrown his way, knew he was good for a few extra yards after the catch. He was an underdog, the little guy who played big. He was scrappy and fought for every yard. He wasn't that great at punt returns, but he was decent. And he had a ton of heart.

And then, THEN, he had to go to our enemies. Not just any enemy, our WORST enemy.

PS. Just for the juxtaposition, here's Reiss's 10/17/07 article on how the Welker trade happened.

Funny how playing for NE has seemed to make Welker better at PR's.

I wonder if the rest of the team had anything to do with his good PR/mediocre KR issues?

looks like aquagay and feelhispain are the only finfans who don't miss Welker at all.

After all he is slow and small and won't get open and not worth a second round pick, ect. :D

that is funny. I don't even think about you anymore Miami. :)

Jets zuck!

Atleast the poster knows its irrational. Welker didn't choose to go to the Pats. The Dolphin's chose to send him to the Pats. Its not Welker's fault. Luckily for the Pats, the Dolphin's FO doesn't know what they're doing.

I understand where this dood is coming from too. I honestly find myself hoping Vinateiri will miss field goals, even though he was such an integral part of our best wins. Sports fandom just makes you crazy sometimes. (And thanks AV. Even though I think you're a traitor. LOL)

Don't forget that he can't score TDs.

Yes, he did choose to go to the Pats. Welker agreed to sign a restricted FA contract (including a poison pill) with NE. He could have played under the tender or re-signed with Miami if he wanted to stay.

They [the dolphins] essentially had three choices: A high tender of $2.35 million would have ensured that the Dolphins received first- and third-round draft choices if another team signed Welker to an offer sheet; for $1.85 million, the Dolphins would receive a single first-round pick; and at $1.35 million, it would be a second-round selection.

In what was considered a weak draft, the Dolphins' decision to offer Welker the $1.35 million can now only be considered perplexing. Instead of forking over an additional $500,000 for a player who was coming off a career-high 67-catch season - which would have required suitors to give up a first-round pick - they essentially gave up their leverage.

So yes, the dolphin's did screw themselves. They decided to lowball Welker with a 1.35 million offer (which means second round compensation if he signs elsewhere) instead of a 1.85/2.35 million offer (at which, probably no team would've been willing to give up a first rounder for welker).

The "Poison Pill" was never offered, it might've been offered had the dolphins not accepted the 2nd & 7th round draft pick offer (although in that case, the fins would've still gotten their 2nd round pick).
If they really wanted him, all they had to do was offer him 1.85 million; the Pats wouldn't have given up a first rounder for him. Or if they really wanted to ensure he remains a dolphin, offer him 2.35

Along those lines:

...basically a not-so-subtle look at some of the real stinkers the Fins front office has pulled in the past few years.

Big deal, we got Samson Satele in return who is a damn good center. I'm buming from losing a guy who Wes Welker couldn't carry his jock, Chris Chambers. Damn I'm going to miss watching him play.

I never said the Dolphins didn't screw up and under-tender him. They did. That doesn't change the fact that he chose to leave Miami for NE.

Welker could have chosen to tell NE "no thanks." He could have leveraged his discussions with NE into a new contract with Miami. Instead he negotiated with NE.

Miami was left with two choices: take the 2nd and 7th or receive the 2nd after Welker signed the poison pill deal (The poison pill deal existed. It was reported before any notion of a trade was. It wasn't used was because the trade was a better deal for Miami).

Obviously Welker wanted to go to NE. He got paid more, went to a contender, and got to catch passes from Brady. It was a great move for him.

I just think it's silly to say he had no choice. He had an easy choice.

The author omitted the Williams trade which really hurt the franchise. They gave two first round picks and a third for a guy that toked himself out of the league.

Agreed: I don't know what he agreed to do behind closed doors, but there was no RFA contract signed by Welker.

Kraft would not permit a poison pill. Instead a trade was offered to the Dolphins with an additional draft pick (7th). As part of the trade, Welker agrees to a deal with the Pats, but it was part of the trade, not a RFA-match-it-or-lose-the-player pick.

Had we offered a poison pill contract and Welker signed it, we would not have given a 7th round pick in addition to the second rounder.

This was discussed ad nauseum last March. Search for one of hte threads if you want.

The Miami Dolphins organization doesn't have a clue about building a winning NFL franchise. While the Dolphins are worse this year, the Patriots have improved by adding ex-Dolphins free agents.

If you think that NE would not have used the poison pill if Miami rejected the trade I have a bridge to sell you in Brooklyn.

Though ultimately not used, the poison pill was integral to the trade. It was the reason why Miami had no choice but to accept the trade. Writing it off as immaterial because it wasn't used is foolish.

At the time I thought the inclusion of the 7th was a little silly. I assumed people were smart enough to see right past the "trade" and realize it was still a poison pill deal. It ended up being brilliant; NE used a shady tactic for leverage, got the player they wanted, and walked away looking clean.

I agree with you actually.

Deion Branch ditto... Ty Law ditto...

The next jersey I'm going to order is Wes Welkers.

He is the continuity for this offense as far as I'm concerned.

The Troy Brown v2 if you will...

The fact that you state Welker couldn't carry Chambers jock proves you know positively, absolutely zero about football.

Welker; clutch, excellent route runner, has stones to continually go across the middle like he does, has a nose for the first down marker, excellent YAC, three touchdowns already.

Chambers; million dollar potential, five cent head (and hands of stone).

You really are a brain dead fool, but you're a Dolphin fan, so I'd expect as much from you.

Six games into the season and it's already over, sucks being you.
