Barlow gets a look
By Mike Reiss, Globe Staff

The Patriots had free-agent running back Kevan Barlow in for a tryout at Gillette Stadium on Monday.

The 6-1, 234-pound Barlow has not played this season after the Steelers released him in late August. He played last season for the Jets and the first five years of his career with the 49ers.

The Patriots have Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris, Kevin Faulk, Heath Evans and Kyle Eckel on the roster at running back. Maroney has missed the last three games with a groin injury but is nearing a return after he was a game-time decision Sunday in Dallas. Morris sustained a chest injury in Sunday's game and Barlow's visit could be tied to his status.

Not good, not good

Barlow has struggled for a few years but he's still an interesting guy for a team that right now is making every RB look pretty good. Solid OL and prodigious passing games can help that.

That sucks. I was hoping Morris might be okay after Wilfork's comments.

I recall a poster saying here he ran like a mad man a few years back when the niners were a winning team and headed to the play-off's.
I dunno maybe BB can inject him with some Patriots kool aid and we have the second coming of Corey Dillon in his prime.
Worst case scenario he is released we take a minimum cap hit if anything.
I wonder if the Patriots talked to the lions about Tatum bell?
If not him Justin Fargas on the Raiders.
Or we could give William Green a chance with a real team, kind of a homecoming.
Oh well if we want Barlow I'll bite he's going on my fantasy team lol.

Well, he's certainly a physical runner, and a decent receiver.

However, he's over 1,000 atttempts in his career and his average has just fallen off a cliff.

I'm not sure if you read my reply about Kevan Barlow but I mentioned that he was a pretty good running back with the 9ers. I actually think getting Barlow wouldn't be a bad move. He has the opprotunity to play for a winning team and get some carries until Maroney/Morris come back. If he does well enough, the coaching staff will find him a role somewhere in the offense. I wouldn't worry too much until we actually find out the status of Morris. The Pats look like their just keeping their options open.

It's worth a look. The Pats have several injuries at RB. Barlow used to be considered the man that was going to replace Rickey Watters in SF. Who knows he might rejuvenate himself in NE like Rodney and Seau have.

Jeez is there anyone on a practice squad we could use?

thats not a bad list

considering Stephen Davis had 12 TDs two seasons ago..Lundy looked good last year but got beat out in camp by Ahman gReen, Samkon Gado and someone else

Barlow would be an ice pickup..or Lundy

Barlow ain't great, but if it's a few games, he's a better option then Eckel, and while I love Faulk, he to valuable to risk as an everydown back for 2 games.

Has Suggs done anything noteworthy since the Butch Davis administration?

Does anyone know if Domanick Williams knee injury ever healed? He was one heck of a good RB before the injury.

Worst case scenario is not the cap hit, but if someone claims the player we cut temporarily to make room for Barlow before deciding he sucks and we cut him.

Right now we have Maroney, Faulk, Evans and Eckel. Eckel pushed the pile for 9 yards and a TD when every man on the field knew we were going to run up the middle.

Barlow has done nothing for a long time. If we can't trade for a decent RB, we can make do without signing JAGs.

I don't think Barlow is better than Eckel. Barlow hasn't been decent for three years. He averaged 2.8 yards per carry last year.

In case we forgot, when BB wanted to add a RB to the 53 three weeks ago, he signed Eckel, not Barlow.
