Do the Patriots exercise his option?
If they were to exercise all remaining 5 years of his contract, that would be about 5 years/30 million more total to pay him.

5 years/30 seems a bit risky, in that most of that money is front loaded, so if he were to suck in a few years, or be injury prone, we'd be screwed. At his age (almost 28), he should have atleast 5 more prime years left though, so he shouldn't decline because of age.

If he is willing to take 5 years/25, I say sign him up. If they could get 5 years/20 mil out of him, I'd be ecstatic. At 6 mil/year though, I might say see what Chad Jackson has to offer.

The one thing about stallworth though, is that he hasn't had his huge payday
yet. This year's 3.xx mil is his highest salary, so he might be less willing to take the hometown discount than Moss appears to be

The two things that have most impressed me about him though is that:
1. He had no complaints, and even appeared happy, even though he wasn't getting the ball the first couple of games
2. After the catch, he's a beast -- fast, can juke, and can plow thru the defender.

7-8mil/year for Moss (hopefully)
5mil/year for Stallworth (hopefully)
3.5mil/year for Welker (4 more years, already signed...good value)
2.5mil/year for Watson (2 more years...this looks like a steal)

Not sure, but if I remember the contract can be nullify if he didnt play to his capabilities. Which mean they can grant a different ones.

If Moss demand 7-8 mill a year, expect the Pats will hesitate. Unless it's a 5 mill plus major incentives per years.

Either way I'm focus on this season first, since Wilfork is FA, and I think Warren too after this season.

Warren signed a contract extension

Here is a link to Miguel's breakdown of Stallworth's contract. His roster bonuses could be converted to signing bonus and prorated over the life of the deal, lowering the hits in the next couple of seasons and increasing them at the back end. This is essentially the deal Branch left on the table only two years removed from it with an inexpensive lead in year in 2007. The cap by 2011 should conservatively be in excess of $130M+.

thanks guys for the head up

Yea, Warren is signed through 2013 (just like BB) and Wilfork isn't a free agent until 2010. Seymour's a free agent that same year by the way.

Honestly if you look at Stallworth's total contract it's around what they offered to Deion Branch which would make sense because Stallworth actually has better career numbers than Branch. I could see them keeping Stallworth around actually.

Ha, didn't notice you also mentioned it was essentially the deal they offered to Branch. The fact that his cap hit can be spread out leads me to believe we could see Stallworth in a Pats uniform for at least the next few years, and I'd be pretty happy with that as I wanted to trade for him in 2006.

Stallworth should be here at the price he signed for. I see no reason to fail to pick up his option. We will then have Stallworth signed through 2012 and Welker through 2011.

It is against this base set if two fine receivers that the team can consider the futures of Moss, Jackson, Washington, Gaffney and Childress.

I pretty much agree, and I also think Chad Jackson when healthy could give the Patriots another good option at WR through the 2009 season. If that guy ever developes his potential which he's flashed when healthy...

hopefully he will want to stay and agree to restructure that deal I doubt he would want to be on his fourth team in 4 years if he left the Patriots

I don't really think he needs to agree to a pay cut so much as the Patriots would want to convert some of the bonus money so as to spread it out over the remainder of the contract. As we've already mentioned over the course of the contract he will have made about the same money the Patriots offered Branch so I wouldn't believe his contract figures to be to high. It just needs some reworking to lower the cap hit.

Yeah but what I'm saying is that there is no way he comes back at those numbers he originally signed the deal for, it was for all intents and purposes a one year deal. What I'm saying is if he really wants to stay here he's going to have to do a new deal with less money.

"His deal with the Patriots could be worth as much as approximately $33 million if all options are picked up over a six-year term.

If the deal winds up being for one year, Stallworth could earn as much as $3.6 million, which includes a $1 million signing bonus, a $700,000 base salary, and a $300,000 workout bonus. Stallworth also could earn $1.6 million in the form of a roster bonus, although it is unknown whether that is a one-time payment or on a game-by-game basis.

The key to determining whether Stallworth's deal is a one-year pact or a longer arrangement will come next February and March, when $8 million in bonuses come due."

Yea, that's what I was trying to explain. Really, I don't understand why anyone would find the $33M to large of a total contract for Stallworth.

I think Belioli will do what they can to keep Moss, Donte, and Welker together. After how these first 6 games have went how can you not? They all compliment each other so well and bring different things to the table.

Being a Saints fan as well, I was dissapointed that he really never lived up to his top pick status(and his hammy injuries were frustrating).

However-I'm glad he's playing gangbusters in NE. I've always liked him nonetheless(and made a good compliment with Joe Horn), so am glad he's gotten his act together.

I think it's a question of overall cap space, though...I see us wanting to pick up a high-profile LB next season (those guys are OLD, except for AD), and if Moss decides he wants to up his paycheck, BB may consider one of the two "expendable." God, I'd hate to see that happen...

Wouldn't that be cool. He is a very nice fit with Moss. Those guys should stat together on this team with brady. Just me opinion.

Man what a frick'n push they can make.

So! The $8M bonus will be spread over the remaining years of his contract.

From espn. Assuming its accurate, it means that the 8M bonus will apply to next year only (since it'll be another one year contract, with an option in 2009). Unless they pick up all 5 remaining years, then they can change the cap to spread the bonuses around. Thats my, possibly incorrect, understanding. Or can bonuses be averaged into cap figures for option years?

Stallworth will receive an initial signing bonus of $1 million, a roster bonus of $1.6 million and a $300,000 workout bonus, to go along with his 2007 base salary of $700,000. That totals $3.6 million for the coming season.

It's after the 2007 season, however, when the really big money could kick in.

For the Patriots to retain Stallworth for the 2008 season, they must pay him an option bonus of $6 million by Feb. 25, 2008. There is a subsequent roster bonus of $2 million due March 1, a second roster bonus of $1.6 million based on playing time, a base salary of $1 million and a $400,000 workout bonus. That totals an exorbitant $11 million for 2008, or a two-year total of $14.6 million.

To keep Stallworth for 2009, the Patriots would have to pay another option bonus, this one of $2 million, by Feb. 25 of that year. In terms of bonuses and base salary, the 2009 season would be worth $5 million to Stallworth, for a three-year total of $19.6 million.

Elias Says

Donte' Stallworth signed with New England on Sunday, potentially giving the Patriots the type of consistent deep-threat receiver they have not had in decades. Stallworth had 38 receptions at an average of 19.1 yards per catch in 2006 with the Eagles. The last New England player to average more than 19 yards per catch in a season of at least 35 receptions was the Steamer, Stanley Morgan, who averaged 19.5 yards per catch in 1985. Elias Says

The final three seasons of the contract all include workout bonuses of $500,000 each and base salaries of $4 million each. The maximum value of the contract, if the Patriots were to keep Stallworth for all six years, is $33.1 million.
