I don't know why they felt the need to Photoshop the Welker image. They made his look like some kind of raging lunatic. If I didn't know any better I'd say that they superimposed his face on someone else's body. They didn't, but that's how badly they manipulated the original.
And the week of the Miami game? Come on, SI. Give us a chance.
Pretty sure, that's how Welker looks. If they did photoshop anything, it would have been captioned as a photo illustration. If it was photoshopped and not captioned as being an illustration, the photog would be in some trouble.
There's a lot you can do with Photoshop that's considered within acceptable limits of manipulation. Practically every photo you see on news sites is cleaned up before it's published. In this photo, the photo editor over sharpened the Welker image, and adjusted the lighting across his face to make it stand out. By doing so, they made him look cartoonish and fake.
Is there a place to buy both this and the Moss issue if you missed them?
