OT: Jacksonville - are they a threat?

With all this Pats/Colts talk, it seems like the Jags are getting very little attention.

They're 4-1, they have a STOUT defense, a VERY scary running attack, and while David Gerrard isn't a world beater, he is under-rated, nonetheless.

And on top of that, they give their fellow AFC South opponent(the Colts) matchup nightmares.

In your opinions, do you perceive this team as a SB threat? They're definitely better than Dallas and Green Bay.

I don't think the have a strong enough passing game to stay with the Patriots. I'm not sure what their record is against the Colts in recent years.

I don't think they're better than Dallas. New England has exposed Del Rio's defense for a few years now. Jacksonville is good, but their defense is no where near good enough to carry the complete lack of a passing game really far. Jones - Drew is probably a little overhyped over last season anyway. He's a good RB but very scary? No not really.

They beat the colts up when they play them. Those guys hate each other pretty good, and they play the Colts next I think. We will learn something from that game for sure. I also think that the Squeelers are a good team this year.

I was just trolling for tickets for next Monday (Jags vs Colts), the Jags usually play them pretty tough, it would be nice to see Payton go down in person.

NE has beaten them the past two years. NE has gotten better. They have a mediocre QB. They beat teams by "punching them in the mouth," a tactic which doesn't work especially well against NE.

I don't see how they keep up with NE offensively. They could have a great defensive game, hold NE to 24 points, and wouldn't be able to score enough points to win.

It's a strong AFC, whoever we play in our (hopefully 2) playoff games will be tough. Jacksonville, Indy, Pitt, yes SD. All that's a "threat" right now is who can beat us for the #1 seed. After that - everyone's a threat.

The Jags play em tough like the Jets play us normally.

The Texans are more comparable to our issue with Miami.

I am very impressed with the Jags this season. They will be there in the end. They won in Denver and in KC this season. How many times have the Pats won in those places lately?

Better defense than NE. Better running game. Those are the two components that spell wins in January.

Jacksonville was a "threat" in the penultimate regular season game last year and the Pats took care of business. The one-dimensional offense didn't work in that game and it won't work again. On offense, the Pats can use the spread formations to force JVille deep into their nickel and dime packages; Exploiting these is BB's/Brady's specialty.

They should.

If you can run the ball and stop the run, you can keep the ball out of the opposing offense's hands. And if they totally shut down the run -- AND manage to get a lead -- it makes you one dimensional.

That takes away one more weapon, the play action pass... of course, it's a bite in the bag to cover our wideouts and tight ends. But if a team takes away the run, it's almost -- ALMOST -- doable. (i.e., if 3 or 4 guys can control the run... that leaves enough coverage to make it tough.)

Jacksonville is a good team. Their defense is stout, their running game is very respectable, and Garrard, I believe, is an improvement over Byron Leftwich. They also play with swagger and confidence, and their coach knows how to rally the troops. Having said that, I really dont think they can keep up with the Patriots and I dont think they are consitent enough to pose a very legit threat.

IMO, Drew could give our defense headaches because he is quick and agile, but Brady would be able to pick apart their defense, no matter how tough it is, and once we put them down by two touchdowns, all that running wont do them much good. They'll have to pass eventually and Garrard is not that great (though he is an improvement over what they had in the past).

At the end, I think we can score four TDs against them, and that should be enough to defeat a team whose offense cannot consistently get over that 20 point mark.

So long as we stay healthy and get Maroney/Morris back, NO ONE can stop us. Yes, No One. We're just too good. The only way we lose a game is if Belichick decides to start resting starters at the end of the season. I don't see that hapenning.

But the strength of our D (especiall when 93 comes back) is stopping the run, and when the chips are down, we rely almost 100% on Brady on offense, so your analysis, while generally true, doesn't really apply here.

The Jags D isn't better than the Pats.How ever it wouldn't surprise me if the Pats are playing the Jags for the AFC Championship in January.Jacksonville is for real.They could very challenge for the AFC South this year.
