If Randy Moss had been a Pat since 2001 would he have been better than Jerry Rice?

I wonder if Randy Moss was signed in 2001 to the Patriots and he played with enthusiasm and team orientation like he is now,would he have seriously challenged Jerry Rice for the best WR ever?

Another thing to ponder is would Brady To Moss have been a more lethal combo than Montana To Rice?

I think its a distinct possibility it would be very close for comparison.

One other thing I think about is if he was teamed up with Deion Branch for the seasons of 2005 and 2006 would we have won another SB Championship or 2?

I bet if we had him for 1 play last year we would have won the super bowl. That 3rd down pass play where Troy ran the wrong route with about 4:00 left in the game.

Yeah, people forget that Moss' first 6 years are the best in nfl history for a WR..better than Rice..better than anybody. What hurt him were obviously the two Oakland years..but also severely injuring his hamstring in 2004, his last year with the Vikings. He never really recovered from that in Oakland and only now in NE is at least looking 80-90% healthy.

But you're right, the talk recently has been "what would Brady's niumbers look like with weapons", we should also be asking what Randy's numbers would look like with a legtimate all pro QB throwing to him, not mediocre QBs or QBs he turned into all pros.

I've always thought Moss at his peak was the best WR to ever step on an NFL field. I believe at this point his per game stats are still better than Rice's. There's no way he'll play as long as Rice did though.

You do know he would need about 100 TDs, 9,000 yards, and 700 catches to catch Rice right even if he played all 5 years at the level he's playing now he wouldn't catch Rice.

Yeah..those two years in Oakland made it a big reach. The thing about Rice is that he was a great player but he also hung around a little and had ridiculous longetivity, thats why its impossible.

I think Moss catching Rice in Yards is impossible, but imo the TDs are kinda within reach..I think Rice is at 197 and Moss is at 108. So thats 89 TDs, and that number will probably be 80 or less by the end of this season Definetely doable, but still hard.

OK, looking at Rice and Moss career stats, Moss would need 10 seasons of averaging about 80 balls for 1000 yards and 8 scores per year.

But, that's not counting what damage moss will do in the remaining 10 games of this season.

Jerry Rice may be the best athlete of all time in any sport.

Moss is the best receiver ever, but Rice had Montana and Young. Moss had Cunningham for parts of two seasons and then a bunch of qbs who should have been backups. He made pretty much everybody who stepped in at qb look like a Pro Bowler though, Culpepper, Bouman (for a few games), Frerotte, and an aging Jeff George. It's nice that he finally has a qb who is close to Montana and Young's level if not at or above it.

I like Moss just as much as the next guy but this Rice thing is just wrong. Rice played what amounts to about 3 or 4 seasons in his prime with QBs such as Elvis Grbac, Steve Bono, Brian Brohm, Jeff Garcia, and Rich Gannon and I maybe missing a few and he missed an entire season from injury.

Jeff Garica was one of the better QBs in the NFC. Rich Gannon won an MVP. And Brian Brohm? He's still in college...

Jeff Garica was one of the better QBs in the NFC. Rich Gannon won an MVP. And Brian Brohm? He's still in college...

That's the point Culpepper was one of the best in the NFL with Moss and as soon as he left he became average. Gannon won the MVP once Rice got to Oakland and was a journeyman QB beforehand, I'll give you Garcia as he's still a competent QB and I meant Brian's brother Jeff. Also Matt Hasselback when he was in Seattle and for anyone who says he was washed up by this point he put up 9 catches and 200 yds with 2 Tds in his fourth to last game on MNF.

I dont think you can say Randy Moss is better than Rice, not now and probably not when he retires. Rce is career numbers are really, really impresive..partly because he was a compiler that hung around, but thats another discussion, lol.

What Moss could have an argument for is that, in his prime, he was probably the best game changing receiver in nfl history. All things being equal, I may take the '98-'03 Moss over Jerry Rice.

Yeah if you include all the years when Rice was past his prime. Moss is in his 10th season. Through his first 10 seasons Rice had more yards per game and more touchdowns per game.

He is BETTER than Jerry Rice, or anyone else to play the position, at least in talent.

IMO, The question would be 'would Randy have worked harder to make up for the difference in work ethic between him and Jerry Rice?'

The answer is hard to say, because part of Moss's improvement has also been personal growth. Remember, this is the same guy that drove into a female traffic cop.

I think the pain of Oakland was a serious eye-opener to Moss, and I don't know for sure if he would have been kosher with Belichick from day one. Would he have drunk the kool-aid from the start? Hard to say.

If he re-signs with the Pats and stays healthy, Belichick will use him for all he is worth anyway, so the stats will keep coming.
