Revisting the Wes Welker trade

So, how many people still feel that trading 2nd (28th/ 60th overall) & 7th (28th/238th overall) round picks was overpaying?

I loved the deal as soon as it happened, and the more I see this kid play, the more I wonder what the Dolphins were thinking. Imagine that they dealt away a return man, and leading reciever for a late 2nd, and then went ahead and took Ted Ginn Jr 9th in the first round. Now, had they dealt Welker, taken Brady Quinn, and announced they were rebuilding, that'd be one thing. However, they went ahead and traded for a 37 year old, labotomized Trent Green.

I continually insisted that, while Welker was a nice little player, the Patriots overpaid. Glad to be wrong.

During the 2006 season I posted about wanting Welker. Then during the offseason I said I wanted NE to go after him. When the Dolphins placed a second round tender on him I didn't believe NE would give up that much for him. When they made the trade I was surprised they were willing to give up that much (just knowing the front office) but I always thought he'd be a very good addition. Remember argueine about it on here with a Dolphins fan just after the trade.

I always thought the Pats got a bargain. I'd seen enough of Welker with Miami to know that he would be Brady's Mr. Third Down with the Patriots. He's having exactly the kind of year I expected. Well worth a 2nd round pick.

I was always amazed that so many people poo-poo'd the deal or Welker's value. He's got that Patriot mentality and the skill set of a young Troy Brown.

I always considered him a young Troy Brown clone. Knowing how this team likes to play, and how valuable a guy like Troy has been over his career, a move for Welker made sense. He's been even better than I thought. The guy is just exceptionally quick, and seems to play good fundamental football. Little things like knowing where the 1st down marker is, and finding the soft spot in the zone. The guy is the perfect compliment to Brady and the outside speed we now have.

Welker was well worth the price... but you've got to admit the Patriots real swindle was Randy Moss for a 4th rounder! Moss makes everyone around him even better. The Cowboys were so focused on stopping Moss that Welker and Stallworth just torched em. I am loving this offense! The Patriots are the JUGGERNAUT this year!! As for the trade, it worked great for both teams. Ted Ginn has nothing to do with the trade, so discount that player. The Dolphins selected Samson Satele with that pick and Satele has been one of the top 10 centers in the NFL this season. He's a great player to build a line around and I couldn't be happier that we got him.

Wow useing the ninth pick in the draft on a kick returner,now thats what I call a steal. Who's running your draft room Matt Millen? So hows life traveling around the country playing for the fins fans football team???????

I'm sure Satele is a promising player, but I'm going to take that statement with a bag of salt. We'll see what he and and the guard-of-the-moment manage against Wilfork come Sunday.

The best part of the Welker trade is we now have the perfect player, signed for forever, at a crucial position, playing for (comparatively) peanuts. The Pats will have lots of leverage with the other receivers because they've got this guy in the bag.

I always thought it was a great deal. Also thought Sammy Morris was a great back up. Also wanted Moss on this team since the day the rumor started, figuring if he was going to live or die somewhere, why not try him out here.

Hard to blame the Fins. The Pats had them buy the short hairs in that deal. I guess you could make the argument that they should have tried to signed him long term before it got to that point. Of course maybe they did try to sign him, but Welker decided he cares more about winning, making deciding to get out of Miami a no brainer.

I was on record in favor of persuing Welker at any tender. I wasn't high on Randy but the deal was a no brainer and he has totally turned me around. He is all in on the koolaid train. TO has behaved himself but you sense how tenuous his hold on his own good behavior is. Too much I and ego. Moss really just wants to be part of something that involves excellence and hopefully leads to a ring. BB wanting Morris was good enough for me. I think most everyone wanted Stallworth. That he came here on a prove it deal speaks to what he wants too.

I know you are trying to justify a #9 pick for a kick returner that you claimed earlier was going to tear up the NFL as a receiver. You also claimed that Cam was only "smoke screening" when he said ginn would be pretty much returning kicks...but really you should check your facts.

Punt returns

Ginn 9 for 63 yards....7.0 avg and 18th in the NFL

Welker 11 for 126 yards....11.5 avg and 7th in the NFL

Kick returns

Ginn 20 for 505 yards....25.3 yard avg and 16th in the NFL

Welker 2 for 51 yards....25.5 yard avg and 15th in the NFL

So for review...7th is better than 18th and 15th is better than 16th.

Now I know the doofins did not take Ginn 9th just to return kicks did they...of course not! SOOOO

Ginn 3 for 83 yards....ZERO TD's

Welker 38 for 386 yards.....THREE TD's

Comparing Ginn vs Welker stats isn't very meaningful, especially at this point. Comparing a rookie on a horrible team with a rookie HC to an experienced vet on a Super Bowl contender as if they have an equal chance to succeed is impossible.
